ixacto··on Defense Motion: Bitcoin is not “money” within the meaning of 18 U.S..C. § 1960 [pdf]
Agreed. 2 of my friends dads growing up successfully grew/sold weed back when it was illegal. Noone went to jail, but there was never any mention of how they got money.
ixacto··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
The referenced FAQ doesn’t say that google workspace paid accounts are exempt from this policy…
ixacto··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
That is...true. Everything google account backed is now wiped from my iPhone. Just got to download the google drive stuff next.
ixacto··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
I’m tempted to make a bunch of honeypot accounts just to see how Orwellian and/or gameable their system is.

What will trigger it? Fan pages to Trump/Qanon? Antivaxxer propaganda? The German federal police paper on how to clandestinely manufacture heroin? Or maybe just a 20mb text file with the “卐” character?!

ixacto··on State Department to pay up to $10M for information on foreign cyberattacks
So basically all the credit rating agencies and the government itself? Or does the OPM get sovereign immunity? https://www.lawfareblog.com/why-opm-hack-far-worse-you-imagi...

It’s possible that there were great intentions all around and the COVID leak was a horrible accident.

It’s also possible that a PRC agency or individual decided to take advantage of the situation and leak it to try and stick it to the United States as a geopolitical move.

I hope this isn’t true, but until we have additional evidence it would be impossible to rule this out entirely. Also the PRC needs to show that evidence to the world ASAP.

For some reason the media wants to call everyone that looks at the situation xenophobic and racist, which just leads me to believe there is more to the story.

Does this apply to google workspace (paying)customers too?

If so google is actually scanning what is supposed to be private information.

ixacto··on Millennials Are Running Out of Time to Build Wealth
Yeah I misread as median. It would also depend on what bubble one is in, higher net worth could seem more normal.
ixacto··on Valve Steam Deck
This is kinda cool. Needs a 144hz display though. That would be the killer feature to differentiate between the switch.
ixacto··on Millennials Are Running Out of Time to Build Wealth
IF millennials only have a 100k net worth at 40 there is no way that they will be able to retire at 65. Hello to working until one dies.
ixacto··on California approves $35M plan for nation's first state-funded UBI
There would be political backlash. But there’s political backlash right now with this program because it’s not universal.

If a ubi program is universal that means the wealthy can’t complain that the poor are the only one being it.

ixacto··on California approves $35M plan for nation's first state-funded UBI
Would it not have been easier to just choose people at random from California’s population? Then it would have been actually universal.
ixacto··on California approves $35M plan for nation's first state-funded UBI
This is welfare, not UBI as it is only going to pregnant women and those transitioning out of foster-care.

IMO this will taint the ubi experiment overall. Universal means Bill gates and Bezos also receive their $1000/mo…

ixacto··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Why not just decouple health insurance from employment?
ixacto··on Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work
Haha got a vasectomy 10 years ago and never looked back. Never had the urge or empathy to raise kids.
ixacto··on Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work
We have already realized that it is unprofitable to go to war.

What would happen if the USA and PRC China got into a hot war over the ROC Taiwan? That would destroy the economy. Much easier to just insult one another and play games with currency manipulation and tariffs.

Capitalism and the global markets interconnectedness will save us from going to war.

ixacto··on Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work
The following is just an idea, but it would be prudent to consider all possible solutions to this problem before making widespread changes to labor law in this country [USA]…

Why do we want to strive for an equal amount of parental leave so much? Seems like an obsession borne out of a political ideology rather than an increase in productivity.

Could it be that the reality is that women have a lot more stress under pregnancy and childbirth cuz they are actually the ones giving birth?

This would lead to a lot more time out of the workforce and probably reduced productivity whilst caring for an infant the first couple years.

What if we just removed all employment protections/protected groups/parental leave and replaced it with a universal basic income? This would solve our leave-inequality problem as you get the same UBI payment everywhere and the FAANG can’t use parental leave as a selling point anymore.

ixacto··on Branson and crew reach space, return in runway landing
It’s [fire in 30s] doable in the United States in any major city if you follow relatively restrictive schedule and don’t have any kids, not exactly privilege just takes a good amount of discipline.

Also salary’s are much higher and taxes are a bit lower than uk/eu. Housing is not too expensive if you rent a room for a couple years, but this is different between a 22/yo and 35/yo.

ixacto··on Branson and crew reach space, return in runway landing
This is the clashing of two different life paths ideologies' e.g. the union/public service employee. Of course people will have opinions on this, because they will be somewhat resentful of those on the other side.

The elephant in the room is that say you have $2MM in the bank and are living off that interest, or are a retired union/public service worker and then you look at how long it took at how long it took to achieve your financial success.

If you save 1/2 of salary in VTI (say 100k-150k range) coming out of a bachelors degree and work for 10-15 years at one of the large tech companies you will have 1.5-2MM USD, which is easily enough to retire on. And you'll be like 32-37years old and still be able to climb Mt. Everest, hike the PCT or AT and probably still have your health.

However if you are a teacher starting out in California, that would be a 44-50k year range https://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fr/sa/cefavgsalaries.asp which yes is really low. Then you work for 40 years and hopefully are able to make enough pension contributions to be able to retire at age 62 and have a decent pension of that 5-6k/mo. By this time lots of people are starting to have health issues and will not be able to go on the adventures that a 32-37y/o would be able to. Also you kinda have to work an extra 30 years.

TL;DR: Incentive structure for being a teacher is not really there, also benefits are not really there. Maybe Scandinavian countries have a better compensation and work life balance?

Incentive to work in tech industry or similar high-paying jobs is there, as financial independence is readily obtainable within 10-15 years.

ixacto··on Private Security Force That Works with Citizen Wants the Power to Arrest People
The USA police don’t ask you for a bribe or usually just mess with you with some notable exceptions.

Police in other countries though…

ixacto··on Private Security Force That Works with Citizen Wants the Power to Arrest People
The defund the policers are getting me to probably vote R in 2022/2024, even though IMO Trump will never be someone I’d vote for, in which case I’ll not vote at all.

Democrats should have immediately distanced themselves from this movement.

ixacto··on Private Security Force That Works with Citizen Wants the Power to Arrest People
This kinda feels like gatekeeping the “defund” movement.

When I walk by the 2MM house on Capitol Hill in Seattle with the “yes we actually mean defund the police” it’s just a bunch of misguided upper class people who are too sheltered to really know danger in their lives.

ixacto··on Private Security Force That Works with Citizen Wants the Power to Arrest People
If this continues it will turn into South Africa where only the wealthy get justice (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_security_industry_in...).

I’m totally fine with police making as much as a software developer as long as they are competent and reasonably non-corrupt. Here is their starting wages, starting 70k without a college degree: https://www.joinlapd.com/salary should probably be a bit more if you want them to be able to afford houses in LA though.

ixacto··on Understanding REvil: The Ransomware Gang Behind the Kaseya Attack
Hah yes we did this at the last company I worked for to categorize shipping info from our freight company’s api to an excel spreadsheet. Mostly did it because we didn’t want to check email all the time and IT did not want to give us a vps to run it on.
ixacto··on China’s gene giant harvests data from millions of women worldwide
Yes the United States sterilized people involuntarily up until 1981 (Oregon board of eugenics). That was 40 years ago, in Xi’s China it is still happening today. There has been some repetitions paid, and it is unlikely this would happen in the United States today.

The United States and China are nothing alike. Try flying a Winnie the Pooh blimp (makes fun of China’s leader) in China and see how long before that gets shut down. We can also freely talk about what is going on in China/HK/TW/wugiwers here, where such speech would be prohibited in China.

ixacto··on NYPD's 'Shrek Bus' Is Fake, Not a Bus, and Should Be Avoided at All Costs
Two options for available for what? We need to enforce the law and prevent violent criminals first and foremost while also exercising some modicum of restraint against non-violent drug users and others that are not directly endangering others.

Letting a bunch of kids from the ‘burbs play Marxist revolutionary while not responding to police was stupid.

Then the progressive element forced out the black female police chief and the “peaceful protesters” showed up at her house https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.q13fox.com/news/protesters-...

I don’t really buy the police brutality narrative pushed by the media either. Yes there have been some about of isolated incidents but crime has gone down as a hole and encouraging people to hate the police will just cause more problems.

ixacto··on NYPD's 'Shrek Bus' Is Fake, Not a Bus, and Should Be Avoided at All Costs
So the police are filling a trailer with consoles as a pr move for kids. Who knows they might even recruit a couple to go into explore scout program or something. And and an angry wokester decides to write a ACAB rant disliking this in Gizmodo.

Police are not the best solution, but when the alternative is the CHOP and gangland-style “justice” I’ll go with police 100% off the time.
