I'm not sure what you mean by "those boards", but the mass redaction and removal of comments is a site-wide thing at this point. It isn't unique to a certain type of community, demographic, or interest.
iwillbenice··on Ask HN: WebAuthn – Replace Password or Second Factor?
WebAuthn should negate the need for a 2nd factor in the traditional sense (you can't steal/extract the WebAuthn private-key). I suppose you could bolt on some kind of WebAuthn after a user/pass login, but I don't see why you wouldn't want it as the first-class citizen replacing the password entirely.

> Reddit is great

By what standard? Every non-technology subreddit (and a few tech ones) have turned into absolute echo-chamber dumpster fires. There is absolutely no conversation occurring in those echo-chambers. The level of control and removal of dissenting opinions is ridiculous. Just look at any thread and note all the [REMOVED] posts.

iwillbenice··on Google Fiber to Launch 5Gbps and 8Gbps Plans in 2023 (Utah, KC, Des Moines)
I fault Google. They were not realistic about how much it costs to build out such a network. Once they got a real taste of the cost, they got cold feet about any further expansion.
iwillbenice··on Google Fiber to Launch 5Gbps and 8Gbps Plans in 2023 (Utah, KC, Des Moines)
Given the progression of multiple transmission technologies (DOCSIS, 5G C-Band), I'm extremely skeptical of the claim that Google is responsible for the overall increase in bandwidth available to residential consumers. Additional bandwidth was coming either way you slice it.

I had high hopes for Google Fiber, and still am disappointed that they pretty much silently scaled back their plans and declared victory in a self-congratulatory manner. Yes they are still around, but they are absolutely in the category of "meme ISP" based on how many households they cover versus other residential ISPs.

iwillbenice··on An Open-Source HDMI Capture Card
Me and two of my friends have been using the Elgato 4K cam link for a year every day for streaming. Not a single issue reported. Perhaps you have a faulty unit.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Google Fiber is a "meme ISP"? They feel far short of their original ambitious goals. I stopped paying attention to them as their plans got more and more de-scoped over time.

Not just the USSR! The UK and US did the same too!

My personal opinion is the "Bitching Betty" voice with its crisp instructions and authoritative tone makes us subliminally think of our mother giving us guidance or reprimand at an early age. It is a great design; it has saved a TON of pilot lives who otherwise would have accidentally perished.
