ivell··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Sometimes original owner does not know that it is a first edition single copy. For them it is an old book. There have been many cases where owners did not know true value of their antiques.
ivell··on More German than many Germans
Swiss voted against tax reduction in the past. I do not know of that many countries, where people would have done that. So the way they think is a bit different.

ivell··on Substack writers, you need a website
It is just risk assessment and mitigation. Some risks are acceptable for some people and they do not need the mitigation. But for others it is not acceptable and they would find solutions.
ivell··on Fields Medals 2026
There was an article on Rudi Mandl who pestered Einstein into working on gravitational lensing.

This happened because Rudi was persistent and Einstein was kind enough.

In future, citizen scientists have a chance to work on their ideas using AI, eventhough they don't have the deep domain skills. Of course, an expert would still need to review it as usual. But it is a useful tool to democratize science further.

ivell··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
People make art to also get recognized for that art. Otherwise they would keep that art secret at home.

Without copyright, anyone can copy the art and call it their own. What is then the incentive for the creator to share the art, if there is neither monetory gain and nor fame. And worse than them being recognized, they might even get accused of copying their own art if someone else became famous due to a copy.

Society would miss out a lot.

ivell··on ICE to Pay Thomson Reuters $125M to Find Voter Fraud
Because there are no consequences of Trump's actions, he would continue to commit offenses.

Neither Biden's administration, nor the judge presiding over Trump's crimes did what should have been done.

The checks and balances failed both when Trump was in power and when he was not in power.

ivell··on Microsoft has released software updates to plug at least 570 security holes
I don't see why AI would deskill what you love to do. People still do embroidery even though mass manufacturing exists. If you love something you would continue doing it irrespective of automation.

ivell··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
> Being forced to work on top of that is the slavery.

Why is it not part of the punishment?

I think it is dependent upon interpretation. Otherwise arresting and locking up can be interpreted as kidnapping and so on.

I do agree that they should be fairly compensated though.

ivell··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Progress is a very human centric view. But if you consider earth as a whole system, we have over optimized the system for our benefit while the other parts of the system hugely suffered (other species, environment etc.).

We need to ensure our progress is balanced taking into account the whole system instead of just one part.

ivell··on Late Bronze Age Collapse
It could be just that almost all ancient civilizations were near water bodies that could flood. Any big flood would seem apocalyptic for the population size of the time.
ivell··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
I suspect even that was unexpected bonus by them. They just stumbled upon a way to manipulate the market. I have hard time to see any action by them as being thoughtful.
ivell··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
> If they had been smart, they would have been learning from Ukraine

This administration seems to have neither the required skills nor an interest to learn from mistakes. Even if they were filled with smart people, they would still fail because of their lack of skill and learning attitude.

ivell··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
I think they meant Caucasian.

ivell··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
Drones can be used for both offense and defense. For example the usage of drones in Ukraine can be classified as defense.
ivell··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
This is why I don't trust self driving cars. It is hard to say when it will make a wrong decision and we are too slow to react as we are not actively engaged in driving.
ivell··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
> That shared infrastructure monopolized by a central government authority is exactly what the US would need to have fast internet everywhere.

In case of India, the government lines had higher costs and lower service standards than the private Jio. So it is not always the case that government infrastructure is better. However, there are regulations that require rural infrastructure development which ensures coverage on low profitability regions.

ivell··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
It was a referendum. Anyone can trigger a referendum if they have 100k signatures. This was not the government position.
ivell··on Why jet engines aren't made in China
Seems they have figured out the single crystal blade tech https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/china-crystal-...
ivell··on Why jet engines aren't made in China
This is a strange article. I did not find anything that is a blocker for China. China is a relative new comer to jet engines and this technology is tightly guarded by incumbents and needs time to mature.

If China can master nuclear, space, chips, it seems a bit stretch to say they it is the Jer engines where they fail.

ivell··on macOS Golden Gate icon comparison
I used to look forward to MacOS upgrades. Nowadays I dread it. Spotlight used to be great for quick look up of files, now it is pretty much useless for me. I am back to using finder and manually looking up files.

I hope things would improve and not degrade further. The updated icons is going in the right direction. More clarity and less useless effects.

ivell··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
I guess we need to kick start SETI@Home like compute donations for training models.
ivell··on Qualcomm to Acquire Modular
Still the result could be that the software performance much better on their hardware than others. Priorities, competition, etc.
ivell··on Deno Desktop
I think the UI look and feel was very ugly for many users and that caused its demise. The cross platform skin was ugly. The native skins were in the uncanny valley.

The framework was reasonably good for its time. By the time good looking UI frameworks came, the bad reputation was already set.

ivell··on DeepSeek Introduces Vision
Why do we have to insist that messages must be made with lots of effort even if it is hard to understand for the reader? As long as what needs to be communicated is done respectfully, I don't see a value for it to be done manually, especially if the handwritten one is hard to read and thus wasting readers' time.

We don't hold the same standards for spellings. Rather we expect messages to be spell checked before being sent.

ivell··on Elon Musk Becomes First Trillionaire as SpaceX Starts Trading
Looking at the figures, I think it is justified.
ivell··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
Same here. That's when I switched my kids' machines to Linux. That was just 2 months back.

And was Windows 11 bug free, no. Was it easier to use, no. Absolutely irritating OS.

ivell··on Swiss voters reject proposal to cap population at ten million
It is about immigration, not population control.
ivell··on EV demand up 50% in France and Germany since Iran war
Everyone wanted disruption and we get disrupted, but not in the way anyone expected.
ivell··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
There are kids with autism and ADHD that you may have not considered.
