ivanech··on Six Years of Professional Clojure
I work at Ladder [0], and almost everything is done in Clojure/ClojureScript here. I had no previous experience in Clojure – Ladder ramps you if you haven't used it before. My interview was in Python. We're currently hiring senior engineers, no Clojure experience necessary [1].

ivanech··on Six Years of Professional Clojure
I started working professionally with Clojure earlier this year and this article rings true. I think the article leaves out a fourth downside to running on the JVM: cryptic stack traces. Clojure will often throw Java errors when you do something wrong in Clojure. It's a bit of a pain to reason about what part of your Clojure code this Java error relates to, especially when just starting out.

"Brine, water comprising about five percent salt, often includes toxins such as chlorine and copper used in desalination, it said. By contrast, global sea water is about 3.5 percent salt."

"Brine can cut levels of oxygen in seawater near desalination plants"

ivanech··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Not right now, I've only taken the computer architecture and operating systems courses. I hope to do CSI in the future.
ivanech··on Ask HN: Favorite Blogs by Individuals?
https://macwright.com/ - my favorite blog about software-related topics

https://vebaccount.substack.com/ - great stuff on economics through a heterodox lens

ivanech··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Courses at Bradfield School of Computer Science (https://bradfieldcs.com/) – I've never learned computer science so quickly or effectively
ivanech··on The last generation of typewriter repairmen (2010)
My mother repairs typewriters in her free time and writes a blog about it [1]. There's actually a pretty vibrant community of typewriter enthusiasts who repair their own typewriters.

ivanech··on Get better at Googling
+1 for clojuredocs. I'm at a company that uses Clojure now, and I've found that stackoverflow just isn't the place for Clojure, so I've been sticking to clojuredocs, which is great.

For personal stuff, I finally started using manpages, and it's been great. Mostly very clear docs + convenient search with apropos.

ivanech··on Ask HN: Can build CRUD apps, what now?
I strongly recommend classes at Bradfield School of Computer Science which teach about as fast as possible (https://bradfieldcs.com/) and their self-study guide (https://teachyourselfcs.com/).

I also got a lot out of Bob Nystrom's "Crafting Interpreters" book

ivanech··on Nil in Go is typed in theory and sort of untyped in practice
This reminds me of Rich Hickey's "Maybe Not" talk
ivanech··on Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is back in its all-online format
Based on the reflections in the glasses in the header image, I wonder if Apple is going to show off ray tracing support on their new M chips
ivanech··on Success depends on emotion management
I think this is useful advice for individuals. It's also important to know that even if everyone truly followed the advice, some people would lose out by no fault of their own (for instance, capitalist economies as they currently function do not sustain full employment without government intervention - it boils down to simple accounting identities). Macro outcomes often are determined by other forces than the sum of individual actions - just something to keep in mind when you see advice for individuals.
ivanech··on Gratitude and Forbearance: On Christopher Lasch (2011)
If you found this interesting, I would very much recommend The Emotional Logic of Capitalism by Martijn Konings. It talks about Lasch's (and other progressives') critiques of capitalism and how they're flawed
ivanech··on Interview with Patrick Collison
I think picking on the FAA is a little unfair. For the past ~20 years, they've been enormously successful in overseeing commercial airliner operations - I think the last commercial crash in the US that killed all onboard was in 2009

ivanech··on The Battle of GameStop
Somebody wrote a reply to the above comment saying that people should simply not have student loan debt and then promptly deleted it before I could post the following reply:

Big ask to expect teenagers to be able to project the marginal benefit of college education (inherently uncertain and speculative) and to also estimate the real, not nominal, burden of the loans to the future (again, inherently uncertain and speculative). And it's tough to make that judgement when many US high schools treat college education like a necessity. Also important to remember that education debt is unique, it's not dischargeable. Unlike any other type of investment debt, borrowers don't have access to bankruptcy, meaning that an investment in education that doesn't work out follows you around for life like an underwater mortgage you can't be rid of.

ivanech··on Jai Language Primer (2017)
he had a recent interview where he addressed this directly: his philosophy is that there's too much crappy stuff out there that's heavily promoted and branded, and so he's trying to get the language to a place where it's stable and worth using before he does a general release / chooses an actual name. It's in closed beta now.
ivanech··on Show HN: Straight2Spam – Send your email right to someone's spam folder

ivanech··on Jeff Bezos has returned to day-to-day management of Amazon
I recently ordered from Powell's and was shocked at just how good the packing job is. They basically shrink-wrap your books to a thick piece of cardboard to prevent damage. With Amazon, I don't think I've ever gotten a book without a bit of damage.
ivanech··on Hidden Champions: Successful but little-known businesses
There's not a single example of one of these businesses in the article
ivanech··on Experience report on a large Python-to-Go translation
Note that this is the case because Go lacks generics, so it's not a quick or easy fix
ivanech··on Ask HN: What are good solo developer blogs that you enjoy reading?
This is a true solo developer:

It looks like this thread is turning into general blog recommendations. I like these, and they haven't been listed:

ivanech··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
I love how ugly and function-driven the overlay is. I think every other self-driving overlay I've seen is much more polished and more clearly made for public consumption.
ivanech··on Green Wave
Great Highway [0] in San Francisco is my favorite example of this. If you drive precisely 35 mph, you'll hit green lights for about two miles. This works in both directions. I think it's possible because the lights are to allow pedestrians to cross the road, so there are no intersections with cars for the full two mile stretch. Still, I think it's a lot of fun.

ivanech··on Decreasing human body temperature in the U.S. since the industrial revolution
An interesting note: Trevor Hastie is an author on this paper. The crowd around here probably knows him best for books he co-wrote: The Elements of Statistical Learning (2001) and An Introduction to Statistical Learning (2013).

ivanech··on The math of media bosses who told Deadspin to ‘stick to sports’ doesn’t add up
This is called editorial independence, and I believe it's fairly common in journalism.

See section VIII in the CBA [pdf]: https://www.wgaeast.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2019/04/G...
