ivan_burazin··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
Would not using one of the selfhosted CDE solution make it even easier?
ivan_burazin··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
Is this how you work across the company?
ivan_burazin··on Cloud Developer Environments but Why?
As the Co-founder of both Codeanywhere and Daytona.io, I appreciate the mention in your comprehensive article.

We agree with many of the points raised in your post. It’s clear that the Enterprise Grade CDE is currently missing in the market. We believe these tools can significantly improve developers’ workflows and efficiency.

Daytona was designed to meet enterprise requirements around security, access controls, infrastructure flexibility, and toolchain customization. Companies can self-manage Daytona and run it on any cloud or on-premises. We see huge potential for cloud development platforms to optimize productivity and security.

But most joiners will be the ones that will use it the most, trying to leapfrog their lack of experience with AI - which will provide the biggest issue imho

ivan_burazin··on Gitpod has laid off around 20 employees
These are not customers, but rather companies that use similar technologies.
ivan_burazin··on I don't read web articles anymore, but I read books
Agreed. Most blogs are now created solely for the point of generating content, in the hopes of generating leads/clicks.

If you want actual insight you need deep research which is most often found in books.

ivan_burazin··on Why Cloud IDEs Are Shifting to a Platform-as-a-Service Model
Yes exactly that, after decades, it seems to be finally happening
ivan_burazin··on VS Code is finally available in the cloud
Epic
ivan_burazin··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
Nitrous was action.io before that but it was like 2012, the company I confounded Codeanywhere, which was originally named PHPanywhere started in 2008.

Just some Cloud IDE history

ivan_burazin··on GitLab Web IDE
It still is "alive" somewhere in Azure but MS scrapped it really and focused making the best possible Desktop Editor. You wont see a web editor form them soon.
ivan_burazin··on GitLab Web IDE
Codeanywhere has a iOS app!
ivan_burazin··on GitLab Web IDE
Web IDEs like ours (Codeanywhere) and C9 Have been around since before 2010...so we have been all around for a while. The Web IDE is a valid product and it has a use case (we have over 1.2M users), but not that all anticipated way back then.
ivan_burazin··on GitLab Web IDE
Really? Have you not tried our solution - Codeanywhere? We have 1.2M Users on our platform, and we have been here a while :)
