itsoktocry··on Show HN: I built an offline, open‑source desktop Pixel Art Editor in Python
>Right now on HN it almost seems like "AI shaming" at work.

HN leans "old school". It's the Angry Nerd trope; Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.

The people doing "AI shaming" or claiming that "AI doesn't work" are going to have their lunch eaten.

itsoktocry··on AI is a floor raiser, not a ceiling raiser
That explains why people here are against it, because everyone is above average I guess.
itsoktocry··on How Tesla is proving doubters right on why its robotaxi service cannot scale
Because there's always some new thing that will bring infinite wealth, and shareholders believe Tesla will be the leader in it.

Now it's robots, $10 trillion market.

itsoktocry··on How Tesla is proving doubters right on why its robotaxi service cannot scale
Or like the solar roof, battery, swap, Cybertruck best selling vehicle of all time...you know, things people said wouldn't work, and didn't.

Elon has a good track record, but he has some duds in there too.

itsoktocry··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Yes, you know exactly what you're getting: processed garbage.
itsoktocry··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Top two ingredients: engineered soy and sunflower oil. Yummy.
itsoktocry··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Unless they have some rare condition that doesn't allow them to eat meat, they can satisfy the cravings by having the odd burger. It won't kill them.

I honestly don't understand the vegetarian who constantly craves meat.

itsoktocry··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
If you're going to eat vegetarian, eat vegetarian. There are lots of foods out there.

The idea that normal, healthy people are going to eat ultra processed vegetarian slop so they can pretend they are eating meat was never going to work.

itsoktocry··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
And yet, despite all of this, in most of my country (Canada) we have a construction labour shortage. Getting anything built is hard (and expensive).
itsoktocry··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
>Russia is a totalitarian dictatorship, it is quite expected that systems of total control will be actively implemented there. And what is better for total control than digitalized things?

Ah yes, the reason the US is years behind most other country's payments systems is because they have too much freedom.

itsoktocry··on Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share in USA
>everyone I know has moved to their general computing being on phones and tablets

And of the remaining desktop/laptop users, 90% of their work is being done in a browser. Which makes Linux distros like Ubuntu suitable for more people.

itsoktocry··on LLM Inevitabilism
Why were you so hung up on whether it had a laptop or not? You know that it doesn't, don't you?

Get it to write the code, then you test it.

itsoktocry··on Measuring the impact of AI on experienced open-source developer productivity
>the previous model retroactively becomes total dogshit the moment a new one is released

Keep writing your code manually, nobody cares.

itsoktocry··on Grok 4
>which the salesman tried to haggle me for more options and told me he thinks we should raise the price a bit "to make sure it gets approved" as I'm signing the paperwork.

If you're walking into a store to spend tens of thousands of dollars and manage to get bullied by the salesperson, it's probably a "you problem".

Tesla charges retail; that's it, it's no magic.

itsoktocry··on Perplexity launches Comet, an AI-powered web browser
Just pitching to VCs...why would any person want that?
itsoktocry··on The $25k car is going extinct?
Low tire pressure affects:

   - Gas mileage (pollution)
   - Tire wear (pollution)
   - Handling (safety)
It's wins all the way around.
itsoktocry··on The $25k car is going extinct?
>So now everyone's car costs $3k more.

$3000 for a backup camera, okay.

itsoktocry··on The $25k car is going extinct?
I often wonder what it's like to think everything is some grand corporate conspiracy.
itsoktocry··on The $25k car is going extinct?
Spoken like someone who hasn't owned a late model car.

>I can put it one that is better than the factory one for a cheaper price

As someone who used to be involved in the car audio competition scene, those days are long gone. Modern sounds systems are great, and tightly integrated into the A/V system.

>the sensor that tells you if you have a flat tire

The sensor will tell you when there's a rapid drop in pressure. You won't notice the flat until you're near driving on the rim.

>the emergency call button (while everyone has a mobile phone these days), automatic regulating seats (pulling a lever is too much difficult), dual zone clima control (it's the same space in the same car, why I would want to set 2 different temperatures?)

Old man yells at great features.

>they no longer provide you with a spare tire, just an useless repair kit...

Yeah, they provide roadside assistance. Because changing your tire on the side of the road is dangerous (as is driving on the donut).

Plenty of used jalopies out there for you.

itsoktocry··on Starcloud can’t put a data centre in space at $8.2M in one Starship
This might be true, but unrealistic.

If you run amiss of US (or EU) regulators, they will never say, "well, it's in space, out of our jurisdiction!".

They will make your life hell on Earth.

itsoktocry··on OpenAI charges by the minute, so speed up your audio
>Slower is usually better for thinking.

Yeah, I see people talking about listening to podcasts or audiobooks on 2x or 3x.

Sometimes I set mine to 0.8x. I find you get time to absorb and think. Am I an outlier?

itsoktocry··on Tesla Robotaxi Videos Show Speeding, Driving into Wrong Lane
>They're closer than ever to solving driving at scale.

Well, yes, if by "closer than ever" you mean marginally closer than they were yesterday, sure.

It's a big step, but there's still a ton to prove. The gap between promises and reality is still large. Waymo is still ahead.

>I haven't had a safety intervention in many months on just random roads.

No one believes you.

itsoktocry··on Tesla Robotaxi Videos Show Speeding, Driving into Wrong Lane
>Shorting it and berating it just seems like you're pushing your position.

This is the Robinhood generation's way of seeing things: everything is a grift.

If you think Tesla is crap, saying so and backing it up with your dollars is totally normal.

itsoktocry··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
>There’s that word again: ”drugs” - you just know anyone using that word in earnest is suffering from a narrow and naïve world view

Do you know what a drug is?

itsoktocry··on Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole
>The Bullshit Jobs jobs theory has been widely discredited by researchers, but you probably won't believe them. Consider that most business is B2B so it makes sense that the casual observer would not know what it's for.

I'm not sure how it's possible that anyone over the age of 30 can say something like this with a straight face. Have you ever worked anywhere? I'd love to know how the "researchers" have discredited this. I'd also love to see their other papers (likely, also, bullshit).

itsoktocry··on Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole
Companies can lay off thousands of employees and not have it affect growth, profits or, really, the workload of remaining employees. How could that be possible if everyone's work is so crucial?
itsoktocry··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
>Yes, that is tremendously important aspect here - the US tech would look better on paper

It's completely unimportant. Nobody is getting fooled "on paper" by amortized salaries.

itsoktocry··on If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued
>Don't put stock in business relationships.

If this is your mentality, is it any wonder you aren't valued?

People post things like this and I'm not sure they have any emotional intelligence whatsoever. Sure, your work/job doesn't have to be your entire life. But what about a little pride in what you're doing? Working with smart people towards a goal to do something useful?

If your mentality is "just show up for work, do what they ask and go home" then it should be no surprise you're at the top of the list to get laid off. I wouldn't want to work with a person who "puts no stock in business relationships".

itsoktocry··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Young people today job hop like there's no tomorrow.
itsoktocry··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
And prior to 1870.
