itsmartapuntocm··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
I feel safer riding MARTA here in Atlanta than driving with the other lunatics on the highway.
itsmartapuntocm··on Show HN: Honda Civic Infotainment Reverse-Engineering
I also paid for Honda Hack. I'm curious if you have the same issue as I where once I rooted with Honda Hack, Carplay seems to be extremely buggy where it often doesn't work without several reboots and/or stopping/starting the car. Haven't been able to pinpoint why this is other than the extra features are just bogging down the ancient hardware to a point that it's destabilizing.

Was deprecated in 7 and removed in 8.

Fedora defaulted to Wayland quite a while ago. But Fedora doesn’t necessarily always follow Red Hat. RHEL deprecated and removed btrfs support, while Fedora now uses it by default.

Cruise ships do this too, even if the extra person is an infant.

I read somewhere that that’s about when they switched from hand coded lists to machine learning for autocorrect.

Joel Osteen is great at helping people give him money in return for absolutely nothing.

Looks like it got the ol’ HN hug of death.

Fedora IoT is essentially the server variant of Silverblue.
itsmartapuntocm··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
Microsoft learned the hard way that the platform doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the games to bring people to it. It’s why they’ve spent billions left and right to acquire studios and publishers.
itsmartapuntocm··on Vanilla Handbook
Silverblue prefers you would use flatpak and containers for apps on top, but it does support “layering” regular packages on top of the immutable core system.
itsmartapuntocm··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
Did you switch to other communities or just swear off social media sites altogether? I’d love to just go back to smaller niche sites like the old days.

God I wish. Then I could wean myself off of there too.
itsmartapuntocm··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
It’s unfortunately a negative feedback loop at first. Hearing it causes you to stress about it, which makes it seem worse. That’s why stuff like white noise helps at first. But ultimately you need be comfortable with when you do hear it, which is the really hard part to come to terms with.
itsmartapuntocm··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
Took me a long time to get over mine when I first got it. I think white noise, while a helpful temporary distraction, does ultimately become a crutch. Ultimately what helped me get over it was just letting myself hear it and ultimately making peace with it.

It’s kind of ironic in that the “cure” is to train your brain to stop seeing as a threat the noise that it’s generating itself.

itsmartapuntocm··on TurboTax is blitzing Congress for the right to tax YOU
Same. They’re pretty upfront about what they charge for. Only thing I’ve ever paid for is the $15 for state filing.
itsmartapuntocm··on Podman 4.4
I embraced pods and now I don’t think I would want to go back to docker without them.

Once I get everything built the way I want I dump the config to a yaml with “podman generate kube” for future reference.

It’s also nice being able to use systemd service files to start/stop everything, and podman has a command to generate those too.

Even Windows 3.1 was not strictly just a shell on top of DOS. It ran in protected mode with its own drivers and can spawn DOS virtual machine.

More recently, movie studios regularly destroyed old film to make space for new ones, causing old pictures, especially silent era ones, to be lost forever.

Even NASA wiped the original Apollo 11 tapes to reuse them.

itsmartapuntocm··on The MTA’s armored money train that ran from 1951 to 2006 in NYC
True they do always seem to be doing track work. But I at least appreciate that they’re proactively doing it, rather than letting it get so bad that they have to shut the system down for months at a time like the Washington Metro.
itsmartapuntocm··on The MTA’s armored money train that ran from 1951 to 2006 in NYC
MARTA does have a pair of old cars converted into a “work train”. Not sure what its purpose is though.
itsmartapuntocm··on High level mods/patches for console video games
The One and Series S OS is essentially some form of Hyper-V, with a VM for apps and one for games. The one for apps is a stripped down version of Windows that only runs UWP apps. I'm not sure if the game partition is the same.
itsmartapuntocm··on Linux Kernel Has Been Forcing Different Behavior for Processes Starting with “X”
NTVDM and DOS/16-bit compatibility only died with the death of 32-bit Windows with 11. I'd say 40 or so years of backwards compatibility is pretty good.
