itslennysfault··on Can you complete the Oregon Trail if you wait at a river for 14272 years?
I find it amusing that the bug in the final screen is essentially the Y2K bug.
itslennysfault··on The Egg, an at Home Nuclear Reactor
Umm..... Enron??
itslennysfault··on Show HN: I Built an AI Tattoo Generator Using Flux
Same for me. I'm guessing the traffic caused by being posted here made them go over their API limit... or it's just bused. idk.

edit... looked at network console. The API is returning a 504 gateway error.

itslennysfault··on A man keeping hope, and 70-year-old pinball machines, alive
There are still companies making new pinball machines today. The mechanical parts are pretty similar to what they've always been. Energize a copper coil, make a piece of metal move. However, the "brains" have come a long way and are basically just modern computers. Also, everything is far more modular. Old pinball machines were a rats nest of wires. Modern pinball machines just use standard computer cables / connectors.
itslennysfault··on Show HN: Filter out engagement bait and politics on your X/Twitter feed
It's not a local AI model. It's using a groq.com API, but your point about people missing the point is still a good point.
itslennysfault··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
That's wild. I saw this when you(?) posted it a while back and assumed no one would want this. No offense, but it doesn't make the coffee taste any better...... unless it does............?

Anyway, glad you're seeing success.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: I made Gyroscopic Gyro Sandwiches
I pronounce this yeeroscopic
itslennysfault··on AI Advent of Code: Implementing Papers
Is it LeetCode? Is it AoC? No. Also, no.

How is this even so high on this site? It has basically zero content and the feels very much like an ad for something, but the site is so lacking I'm not even entirely sure what it's supposed to be. Not sure who would enter their email address on this site, but my advise would be, don't.

itslennysfault··on Malware can turn off webcam LED and record video, demonstrated on ThinkPad X230
Yeah, my understanding is that is how the light on MacBooks works, but I'm not sure about any other makes/models. Obviously, if this is possible that Thinkpad model doesn't do that.
itslennysfault··on Show HN: Retry a command with exponential backoff and jitter (+ Starlark exprs)
If I had a nickel for every time I've written exponential backoff with jitter I'd have like several nickels.
itslennysfault··on Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, and early object-oriented programming (2016)
I was first introduced to Objective-C in 2010 when I worked on my first iPhone app. I've come back to it a half dozen times over the past 15 years since then and always hate it. I only discovered swift a few years ago (when I had to do some iPhone stuff) and was so happy to not need to use Obj-C
itslennysfault··on Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, and early object-oriented programming (2016)
Interesting, I guess that part was missed on me since I only really ever used it for iPhone apps and never really had a need to use C directly.

Also, you're 100% right. The square brackets are what immediately repulsed me and continued to befuddle me even after years of experience with it. Also, everything just feels "backwards" to me if that makes any sense. Coming from Java/C#/JavaScript everything just seemed unintuitive to me at all times. Also, I think this was heavily compounded by using xCode which (at the time) was incredibly laggy. So, I'd mess up the Obj-C syntax and the IDE wouldn't tell me for what felt like forever. Often I'd make a change and hit "play" before the syntax highlighting caught up and that always felt infuriating.

I last used xCode about 4 years ago and it was still an issue then (even with swift).

itslennysfault··on RTEMS: Open-source real time operating system
Could anyone here provide me a TLDR of why a real time OS is beneficial and specifically when/where it would be needed or most beneficial?
itslennysfault··on Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, and early object-oriented programming (2016)
So, this is why the abomination that is Obj-C is/was used for iPhone/Mac apps. I can't overstate how much I hate Obj-C. I'm so sooo happy Swift has pretty much entirely taken over.

Side note... I feel similarly about the Java to Kotlin transition. Sooo much better. Although, I don't hate Java NEARLY as much as Obj-C.

itslennysfault··on German coalition government collapses
Only for the house. Senate is every 6 years.

The point though is that we don't have a good mechanism to remove a government that isn't meeting expectations. Impeachment exists, but it is very difficult and has never succeeded at removing a sitting president.

itslennysfault··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
Personally, I've seen glaring examples of both extremes when it comes to living above/below your means. However, I don't know that this is generational. Back when I was in my 20s I knew plenty of people (in my age group) buying expensive cars/housing and being cash broke.

An example to the contrary... a few years back I worked with a college hire who got a super fat signing bonus and made a plenty hefty salary for a first job, but he rented his friend's walk-in closet and almost never ate out. Within just a few years he had enough money for a downpayment on a home in one of the most expensive housing markets in the US. I don't think this type of frugality has ever been the norm, but it does exist in all generations.

itslennysfault··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
Maybe this was different per region, but I used GrubHub when it first launched in Chicago and even back then they had "their own drivers" (contractors same as Uber/DoorDash).

However, I wouldn't be surprised if their roll out involved capturing businesses that already offered delivery drivers until they had a critical mass of drivers in the region or something.

itslennysfault··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
GrubHub was always my go to. That miiight be just because I lived in Chicago when it launched so it was the default for me for so long. I used it pretty much exclusively all through Covid lockdown, but have since stopped doing delivery much. Maybe once or twice a month. I do not have Prime (so I don't have GH+), but my credit card provides "free" DashPass so I now pretty much exclusively use Door Dash when I do get food delivered. If it wasn't for the free DashPass I'd probably still use Grub Hub
itslennysfault··on Why langurs drink salt water
That's interesting, but this article is about langurs (which is a type of monkey).
itslennysfault··on Behaviors reveal sophisticated tool use and possible “pranking” among pachyderms
Reminds me of that story of the exact opposite where an elephant killed a woman. Then, showed up at her funeral and disrespected her corpse. THEN, brought friends and destroyed her house.

No one really knows why, but the rumor was she was associated with a poaching group. Either way that elephant clearly hated this lady and made it known.

> I'm not saying those tools were perfect

Bite your tongue. Flash was perfect.

itslennysfault··on German coalition government collapses
I wish the US democracy had this feature. We have to just suffer through it for 4 years.
itslennysfault··on German coalition government collapses
Pretty safe bet those in prison will be pardoned, and I wouldn't be shocked if the dead traitor got a posthumous medal.
itslennysfault··on PacCam: Pac-Man controlled with your face
Be nice if you could choose which camera to use. I have 3 plugged into my computer and it chooses the one that is pointing out my window and I can't find a way to change it to the one that is pointing toward my face.
itslennysfault··on The Cult of Microsoft
I think the "Growth Mindset" thing is one of the best things Satya did. I joined Microsoft as a hater of pretty much everything Microsoft. I use a Mac as my daily driver and Linux servers for all my work stuff. I lived through the Balmer era as a VERY critical outside observer. So, I went into NEO (new employee orientation) very skeptical. The way they (under the growth mindset mantra) admitted to their past failings and hubris that lead them to do things like assume their way was the "right way" and underestimate their opponents (namely Apple). Hearing them speak transparently about that and how they now have a culture of admitting when you might be wrong was refreshing and exciting.

I do not currently work at Microsoft, but was there for a few years and enjoyed my time there.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: One – A new React framework unifying web, native and local-first
I honestly can't wait for the day I wake up and everyone hates React as much as me. I'd also settle for people just forgetting it for something better.
itslennysfault··on Meta Movie Gen
hmmm... Maybe it's because I knew it was testing me, but I noticed it right away and counted the right count.

I could see it being pretty shocking if I hadn't, but I honestly can't imagine how I'd miss that.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: A tool for creating chord charts on the go
Awesome! I've been brain storming an app for a while and have been debating between Flutter and Godot. I've done a couple small games in Godot and really enjoyed it, but I was hesitant to do a non-game with it.
itslennysfault··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
That's a weird analogy. It'd be more like your natural gas provider trying to negotiate a deal and then when you don't reach an agreement they turn off the valve to your house.
itslennysfault··on Winamp Legacy player source code
Nah, I'm on my work computer. No browser add ons. Just standard chrome in dark mode. Clicking the light/dark toggle on the page (as some others suggested) does fix it.

Here is a screenshot of what I see if you're curious: https://imgur.com/a/eRchEn7
