itohihiyt··on Show HN: HTML for People
I think this is great, my biggest stumbling block is deploying what I've created. I have a domain and need a host. The paragraph about deploying only covers hosting by a service you can't use you own domain on (as far as I can tell). It mentions netlify, which I assume would be an option if you have your own domain, however their website talks about shit but tells you nothing.

Give Microsoft full control of how I can access my accounts... No thanks.

None that I'm aware of but I've not looked either.
itohihiyt··on The Wobbly Table Theorem (2022)
> A three legged table will always sit stably on an uneven surface.

But the table surface might not be level, if my thinking is correct.

And this is a good reason to block all JavaScript in unlock advanced and slowly whitelist the scripts you see until the site works properly. Slow and error prone but once you get used to it it's a breeze. And you're completely immune to this sort of shittery.
itohihiyt··on uBlock Origin CNAME uncloaking now supports filtering by IP address
uBlock Origin is what makes Firefox even greater and definitely one big reason I use Firefox over Chrome etc. It make the Internet browsable.
itohihiyt··on Sq.io: jq for databases and more
What's wrong with CSV? I love me a CSV file.
itohihiyt··on Making the Web Boring Again
If you're talking simple content, text and images, and you're not trying to do "clever" stuff like making fancy transitions or anything that involves oodles of JavaScript then I can't see how the web isn't on par with pdf. I'd say it's better.

I hate modern sites where you need JavaScript to load text and images.

My issue with pdf is it's a shit show behind the scenes.

itohihiyt··on Making the Web Boring Again
I can definitely agree with the local first native apps. I started learning dart/flutter for this reason, so I can use one code base across multiple platforms, but I get the impression you'd likely not agree with my choice.

I do disagree about the web being poor for content though. Properly done it is way better than PDFs. Provided it's simple and clean.

itohihiyt··on The other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the US
Someone who's actively engaging in faffing about: faffer.
itohihiyt··on The other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the US
My favourite thing that Americans say that means something very different in the UK is: fanny.

"Fanny pack" makes me smile every time I hear it. One of my favourite Scottish colloquialisms is: fannybaws.

I never say: swimming costume. I call it a: swimming cozzie. Wonder what you American friends would make of that?
itohihiyt··on UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius
I'm unaware of the details but wasn't the island chain sold to the British?
itohihiyt··on The best browser bookmarking system is files
I use Zotero for what you're talking about. It saves a dated copy of the site, the link, has the ability to tag and add notes. Offline first too.
itohihiyt··on Normans and Slavery: Breaking the Bonds
This is certainly a popular modern narrative.
itohihiyt··on The RedMonk Programming Language Rankings: June 2024
Interested to see dart in top 20.
itohihiyt··on REPL for Dart
True enough, but I think flutter/dart have enough traction beyond Google that they'd survive. I like dart as a general purpose language too.
itohihiyt··on REPL for Dart
I hear this a lot. I don't really see Google getting fed up with flutter, due to what they have invested in it, but for the sake of argument let's say that did happen. Google abandons flutter. What happens next? Will it fizzle out?

To take your point about the domains, flutter's, and by association dart's, domain is cross platform development from one codebase. As far as I can tell nothing else comes close just now, that domain makes flutter relevant no matter what. Surely as opensources projects, both survive?

I, on the other hand, have never purchased anything I was going to pirate if I couldn't find it. So for me it definitely is not correlated. If I couldn't find it I just moved on. I tend to pirate nice to haves.
itohihiyt··on Ask HN: Is a Masters in CS/Engineering worth it for a mid-career PM?
UK. That's what the uni calls it.
itohihiyt··on Ask HN: Is a Masters in CS/Engineering worth it for a mid-career PM?
I'm 40+ and I've just handed in my dissertation for a BSc in computer science. I've also just started an MSc in cyber security.

My advice. If you want to get a job just do courses that are going to teach you the practical things you need to know/are interested in. Academia is a waste of time unless you're going into academia, or an industry that requires academic skills.

All the stuff I can do is self taught, though these course have taught me the fundamentals.

If I knew then what I know now I would have gone a different way.

itohihiyt··on The theft of a Churchill portrait
Two things.

1. That article doesn't say Churchill killed millions by causing a famine. 2. Amp? Really? Is amp still a thing?

I'm currently rereading Malazan Book of the Fallen series. It's a slog, but I'm noticing much more stuff I missed the last time, and the bits I thought I remembered correctly are definitely not they way I remember.

itohihiyt··on Show HN: AppFlowy – An Open-Source Notion Alternative Built with Flutter
I understand rust is faster than dart but wonder why rust was used over dart. As I understand it dart can be used for the backend and there would be no need for interop between flutter and rust if dart was used. Just interested in the choices.
