itbeho··on The Myth of the Wealthy Welder
My aunt owned and managed a welding shop for over 50 years. She'd disagree with most of what you wrote. The opportunity is there for people that want to work hard and learn. There is in fact a fairly good tradition supporting women in the trades, (in the US at least) especially during and after WWII. See "Rosie the Riveter" for example, which is where my aunt got her start.
itbeho··on BonziBuddy
I wonder what the creators of BonziBuddy are doing these days?
itbeho··on Glue traps are cruel, and retailers should be banned from selling them
Suffering is suffering. I don't care what level it's on. The ends don't justify the means. Be humane about it.

Well damn... I have my dev environment running very nicely in a Pixelbook via Crostini and love it.

Contrast this with actor Peter Fonda, who called for Trump's son to be caged with pedophiles and did so with impunity from Twitter.

itbeho··on John Dvorak: “Yesterday I was fired from PC Magazine”
Great! Please share a link to the post. I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
itbeho··on John Dvorak: “Yesterday I was fired from PC Magazine”
I think you are right and it's probably the most plausible answer. But in the spirit of interpreting the parent comment with good faith, help me walk through a thought experiment:

Try getting a job or a promotion with any VC backed SV company while having a Twitter bio that indicates you voted for or support Trump. Not quite willing to do that? A bridge too far? No prob. Instead, just put that you support the 2nd Amendment. Or the military. Or law enforcement. Or smaller government.

I dare you...

itbeho··on Twitter CEO: conservative employees ‘dont feel safe to express their opinions’
Honest question as I don’t read Breitbart: Can you cite an article on their site supporting your assertion regarding “white supremacist propaganda”? I went looking just now and saw a lot of stuff liberals would disagree with but my cursory look revealed nothing to the degree you mentioned.
itbeho··on Google’s first all-hands after 2016 election [video]
It’s worthy of a discussion in my mind. There are a few articles in the news this week about Google trying to influence the election in Clinton’s favor. And yet she still lost. Perhaps Google isn’t as influential as they think?

That being said, Google executives are not elected representatives of the American people and they subvert the voter’s will at the risk of regulation that will likely be worse for them and their customers.

F.M. Busby was pretty good.

itbeho··on Mastodon and the challenges of abuse in a federated system
You can see a glimmer of why he has so much trouble with trolls though in that post. He refers to Trump as "Shitler" and his supporters as "cultists" and then a few paragraphs later admonishes the reader to "Please do your best to be kind, and make an effort to make the world less terrible."

"Do what I say but not what I do..." is a terrible way to get people around to one's way of thinking.

itbeho··on Trump Accuses Google of Burying Conservative News in Search Results
Seems like conservative news sites that are claiming this ought to be able to use Google’s own analytic tools to highlight any trends against them.
itbeho··on John McCain has died
I appreciate the honesty of your question. I think you probably miss a lot of nuance about what it's like to be a middle-of-the-road person. As someone from a lower middle class background and being of mixed race I can probably give you a few hundred answers for what's wrong with being 'elite' in the political sphere, but I'll leave at this to think about: Which political party has painted itself into a corner of perceived 'elitism' the last election cycle?

The 'elites' underestimate the middle-of-the-road at their political peril.

itbeho··on Facebook is rating the trustworthiness of its users on a scale from zero to one
You had me with your take on "good intentions". You lost me with bringing Trump into the discussion.
itbeho··on California teacher pension debt overwhelms school budgets
I don't think they are trying to perpetrate a scam. But I do know local educators that spiked their pensions by working overtime right before they retired. The vast majority of the local school district budget goes to support pensions, not fix peeling paint or removing weeds which are visible on almost all local school grounds. This isn't an issue of underfunding. This is a problem that has resulted from mis-management.
itbeho··on MoviePass couldn’t afford to pay for movie tickets on Thursday
I wouldn't say it's a myth. It's been a while but I recall being in a theater (San Luis Obispo, CA) and witnessing a manager ask a person to throw away his smuggled snacks or leave the theater. He declined to do both and the police arrived and escorted him out.
itbeho··on What tech stacks are indie hackers using for their apps, and why?
Elixir, Phoenix and Postgres. I like a lot about Elixir and find it's a great solution for many of the soft-realtime apps that I've been building lately.

Standing up a CRUD app in Phoenix is dead simple as well.

itbeho··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
I’m tempted to start a movement called Tape the Touchbar™. Just put a stylish piece of black electrical tape over it and pretend it’s not there.

Seriously though, I share your frustration in regards to both f.lux and external monitor/stand use. It would be nice to be able to dynamically disable the Touchbar in a user configurable way.

itbeho··on An MSG Convert Visits the High Church of Umami
I think it’s very likely that something with MSG on the label often includes things like anti-caking agents or nitrates that may actually be the culprit. I kept a food diary for a year and the common headache trigger seemed to be “MSG”. Changing my diet to avoid it eliminated the headaches. So it really doesn’t matter to me if someone on the internet says it can’t be MSG. The practical result in my case was close enough. I have sympathy for anyone that suffers from migraines.
itbeho··on Facebook was in talks with hospitals about a proposal to share data
They deserve a pile on. I don't want any social media company having any access to my health data, especially if I haven't authorized it.

(1) There is no guarantee they will accurately associate that "anonymized" data with my profile.

(2) There is no guarantee they will "do no harm" with that data. It's a way to run-around existing HIPAA protection and something a lot of organizations would pay for if they could.

Is this still a thing? I thought people were selling counterfeit license plate frames on ebay and had diluted the effectiveness of buying off the police with a "charitable" donation.

itbeho··on [dead]
I'm of mixed race. I just got pulled over last week. I drive a modestly nice late model car in a modestly nice neighborhood. I politely asked the cop why I was stopped and he said "one of your license plate lamps is out" He took my driver license and registration and after 10 minutes or so handed them back and said "Be a little more careful..." and sent us on our way. Got home and my license plate lamps are both working.

My wife and I had just left a movie theater around 9:00pm, and to the best of our recollection violated no traffic laws. We were actually stopped two blocks from the theater.

I've definitely felt like I've been targeted before. However, in this instance it felt more like a fishing expedition. I wonder how much of any citation resulting in a fine ends up back in the local PD's coffers?

itbeho··on YouTube and Reddit roll out new restrictions including channel and sub bans
It takes more than a whim to change it.
itbeho··on Ask HN: What is your favourite programming language? Why?
I'm having a ton of fun with Elixir these days. Primarily focused on utilizing Nerves and deploying sensors in agricultural environments monitoring irrigation, temperature and humidity.
itbeho··on iMac Pro 18-core Follow Up Review
Leaving for what though? I have mostly the same sentiment as you, but find just about everything else on the market has some level of design insanity that provokes frustration with use. It's literally out of the pot, into the fire....
itbeho··on Ask HN: What is your favorite pocket knife?
Victorinox Farmer - just the tools I need without the heft of a multitool.

A close second is the Victorinox Lumberjack. If I remember correctly it is/was the smallest SAK with a saw, which I use for all kinds of things.

itbeho··on macOS lock screen: “I just sent my session pass to my whole team”
Very similar issues here. MBP Touchbar with one external 5K LG display. I love the LG when it works.

Super frustrating when I I sit down and wake up the machine to find both displays flashing. Usually unplugging the LG clears things up, but replugging often results in the brightness on one display being set randomly.

itbeho··on Reasons to use Phoenix instead of Rails
I’m old enough to remember when people said Rails was overhyped:)

Hype aside, I really like Phoenix a lot.

itbeho··on Ask HN: What are your favorite books of all time, and why?
Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny. Great protagonist, characters and universe. Written in the 70’s but still holds up well by today’s standards.

Rumor has it that Robert Kirkman of Walking Dead fame has optioned it for TV.
