it33··on Gitter is open source
Hi omnimus, thanks for the mention.

Mattermost has a brand new, open source Android client in beta written in React Native used by thousands of testers: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mattermost...

It's greatly improved from the original version and official release is this month.

Mattermost mobile notifications aren't a commercial feature, they are just off by default due to privacy (push notifications appear on a mobile device when the device is locked).

Go to System Console > Notifications > Mobile Push > Send Push Notifications to enable.

You can also deploy your own Mattermost Push Notification Server (https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-push-proxy) and compile your own Mattermost Android and iOS apps (https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-mobile) for total control.

it33··on Ask HN: If your company cares about security, why does it use Slack?
Hi Eropple, Mattermost team here. Sorry to hear your Mattermost experience wasn't smooth. Could you share an example or two of what we can improve? We ship new releases every month on the 16th. If there's something you feel should be corrected I would love to see it addressed. There's over 500 contributors on the project and thousands of companies that deploy it.

In terms of security, I would propose that professionals dealing with sensitive data are often more comfortable with a self-hosted solution. As an example, former members of the CIA, FBI and NSA have used Mattermost on national television in the US: https://about.mattermost.com/open-source-mattermost-software...

it33··on Why we’re betting against real-time team messaging
Hi @bambax, Mattermost team here,

Appreciate your feedback. The Mattermost instance at Startup School does offer threads, if you either click the "Reply" arrow when you hover over a message or go to the "[...]" menu and select "Reply".

If it wasn't easy to discover, that's 100% our fault and we'll see what we can to do make it more prominent in the tutorial and in other ways.

Definitely agree threads are crucial to go back to topics in early discussions. We've had them since 2015 and for people using them, they become kind of indispensable.

Maybe give it a try? Would love to hear your thoughts in the Mattermost feedback channel.

it33··on Ask HN: Can GitLab CI support complete infrastructure automation?
Hi @justsorneguy, Mattermost team here. Thanks for the mention! What can we add to Mattermost to improve?
it33··on Show HN: Datacol – Get Private Heroku on Google Cloud
Mattermost team here, looks great! Thanks for offering this,
it33··on Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications
Fantastic! Thanks for the mention! Yeah, scripting integrations with curl is super useful.

For others, here's another article of replacing IRC with Mattermost in education: https://opensource.com/education/16/3/mattermost-open-source...

it33··on Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications
Thanks for the mention on Mattermost!

For anyone who'd like to try an open source Slack-alternative, you can start in less than a minute with auto-deploy via Bitnami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKqHWqrAgpk&t=9s

Goes to AWS, Azure, GCP, Oracle Cloud, all data under your control, Mattermost Team Edition runs under MIT license.

Also, check out our new React Native mobile apps: https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-mobile

it33··on Google Talk Is Being Discontinued
Hi Jerome, highly appreciate your feedback. I can see where you're coming from.

You're 100% correct on website, we need an upgrade. We have someone starting soon to help and we'll show them this thread.

A couple of notes:

1. Push notifications are free. Paid is if you want to use Mattermost key for encryption (we choose not to encrypt things for people we don't know, but we document how they can do it themselves): https://docs.mattermost.com/overview/faq.html#are-push-notif...

2. Our intended users are organizations that need to deploy communication behind their firewalls (no 2fa from us needed) and can't use SaaS, e.g. manufacturing, banking, healthcare, public sector, security companies, companies with very strict non-disclosure agreements, etc.

Logos on our website are examples: https://about.mattermost.com/

PS: I read about HearthSim, you're running a really cool company. If you're ever in San Francisco for GDC, perhaps we could meet in person.

it33··on Google Talk Is Being Discontinued
Hi @scrollaway,

Thanks for your feedback on Mattermost. Could you share more on what you'd like to see changed?

For folks who haven't seen Mattermost, here's a demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKqHWqrAgpk&t=1s

Also, I noticed from your HN profile links you're a UX designer.

We're actually working on our new generation of mobile apps in React Native (https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-mobile).

If you're open to critiquing some of the screenshots from early builds, or even participating in the design discussion, we'd welcome your involvement.

Also, we'd welcome you to join our community server at https://pre-release.mattermost.com/

I'm on there as it33 if you want to DM me to share more of your thoughts?

PS: Regarding IRC, Mattermost connects to IRC, XMPP, Slack, HipChat, Matrix and other systems via Matterbridge: https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge

Hi @aaron-lebo,

Mattermost team here, would welcome any feedback on how we could improve.

Here's a demo of Mattermost features vs Slack as FYI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKqHWqrAgpk

it33··on GitLab acquires Gitter, will open-source the code
Hi @simplehuman, Mattermost team here, thanks for the mention.

First, we love GitLab. While we'd be flattered with an offer to join them, Mattermost has its own mission and motivation (https://www.mattermost.org/why-we-made-mattermost-an-open-so...)

Second, regarding community contributions, we have an open and transparent process for proposing, discussing and vetting contributions before a pull request is made (https://docs.mattermost.com/developer/contribution-guide.htm...).

When people don't follow the guidelines, and when they work hard to contribute something before engaging with the broader community--especially when it totally works but can't be officially accepted--we feel terrible.

Recent example: https://github.com/mattermost/platform/pull/5718 Previous related example: https://github.com/mattermost/platform/pull/2718

You can follow the links there to go into detailed, heated discussions around this in our own Mattermost instance.

In our manifesto, we lay out the purpose of the open source Mattermost Team Edition, and about the commercial Enterprise Edition (https://www.mattermost.org/manifesto/), and--at least in my mind--our decisions are based on scope (What purpose does X serve? Where should it belong, if at all)?

Our contribution guidelines are in our docs, they're in our developer docs, they're displayed to contributors before they can submit a merge request, and yet with the size of our community, we still have mistakes and awkward threads.

I hope we can do better here. If anyone would like to discuss, you're welcome to join our community server: https://pre-release.mattermost.com/

Third, yes, agree, GitLab is certainly competing with Atlassian, and winning a lot.

it33··on Slack vs. Microsoft Teams vs. Google Hangouts
While the first generation Mattermost mobile apps used web rendering, we have next generation apps in React Native releasing end of March that are rendering natively.

The next generation apps are much faster, and we're excited to release them soon.

Here's the source: https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-mobile

There's instructions on how to get early access as well.

it33··on Slack vs. Microsoft Teams vs. Google Hangouts
Mattermost Team here, thanks for the mention!

One reason for propreitary SaaS over open source used to be setup--but now that Mattermost is on Bitnami it's easier than ever to deploy Mattermost to AWS, Azure, GCP and OCP: https://bitnami.com/stack/mattermost

it33··on We Tried Slack and We Deeply Regretted It (2015)
Mattermost team here. Yes, there are multiple Mattermost deployments over 5000 users within enterprises.
it33··on Threaded messaging comes to Slack
Mattermost team here, thanks for the mention!

Mattermost had threaded messaging since 2015, it used to be called "Replies" and we renamed it "Threaded messages" in April 2016: https://about.mattermost.com/mattermost-3-4-7/

If anyone wants to try it out, you can join https://demo.mattermost.com/

Mattermost is an open source, private cloud Slack-alternative.

We're "Slack-compatible, not Slack limited" and you'll find all the core features of Slack plus many benefits added by the open source community--like markdown support, translation into 11 languages, multi-team accounts, searchable hashtags and much more: https://www.mattermost.org/what-slack-might-learn-from-its-o...

it33··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Microsoft Teams?
Hi @gkoberger, Mattermost team here. Thanks for the mention.

I'd share that Mattermost has gotten popular as a Slack-alternative recently. There's hundreds of contributors and we're now available in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Dutch and Russian--whereas Slack is English-only.

Also, the open source community has added many features Slack doesn't offer, like threaded messaging, multi-team accounts, markdown support, etc. See: https://www.mattermost.org/what-slack-might-learn-from-its-o...

Right now, Mattermost is most popular among IT organizations looking for an open source, private cloud messaging solution they can control and customize, and we're branching out from there.

it33··on Slack client for Commodore 64
For those who haven't tried it, here's a video of how Eclipse Foundation uses Mattermost as an open source, self-hosted Slack-alternative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfeNFJnCfcg

While there's not yet C64 support, Mattermost connects to IRC, Slack, Gitter, Discord, Telegram and HipChat using Matterbridge (https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge).

In terms of features, the Mattermost community has added quite a few that aren't available in Slack--markdown support, multi-team accounts, threaded messaging, etc.: https://www.mattermost.org/what-slack-might-learn-from-its-o...

Mattermost deploys as a single Linux binary with MySQL or Postgres and you control everything.

it33··on [UPDATE] Group chat sucks for programmers, so I fixed** the issue
Totally agree about the problem of interruption in basic messaging.

Mattermost added threaded messaging to avoid this, and at least for me it works really well: https://www.mattermost.org/what-slack-might-learn-from-its-o...

Anyone can look at the Mattermost product or code base to see how we added it--open to feedback on our implementation as well.

it33··on Slack may regret its letter to Microsoft
Mattermost is an open source, self-hosted Slack-alternative: https://www.mattermost.org/what-slack-might-learn-from-its-o...
it33··on Dear Microsoft
From what we've seen at Mattermost (open source Slack-alternative, https://mattermost.com/) supporting on-premises deployments with an open source community is actually pretty awesome.

We have over a thousand people on our forums helping each other out, people are building installers for Mattermost in Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Docker, etc. (just web search to find them).

We're also getting help writing and updating our deployment docs (https://docs.mattermost.com/).

it33··on Flow – Create automated workflows between your favorite apps
That's a pretty cool idea for Mattermost to have triggers that go off on new account creation.

Maybe a customizable welcome email as well for new team members.

it33··on Ask HN: What good open source projects written in React that I can learn from?
Thanks oelmekki,

Highly appreciate the feedback--critique is valued, and we welcome hearing it publicly.

It benefits Mattermost to have more people with deep React experience looking over the project and suggesting changes.

One example is the discussion that influenced us to adopt React Router: https://github.com/mattermost/platform/issues/790

Mattermost started in the early days of React and you're right not all the patterns were in place from the start--and you've pointed out areas we know we want to re-write.

We're doing this by starting fresh with new React Native apps using Redux: https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-mobile

The goal is to create a model for the future with React and Redux, and move that back into the server.

Would you be interested in dropping by our Developer channel some time (https://pre-release.mattermost.com/core/channels/developers) and maybe just hanging out with us and sharing more of your thoughts?

For example, how would you break the re-write into parts, and prioritize?

How might we organize tickets for people to help?

On Wednesdays at 10am California time we have open developer meetings via Hangouts if you're up for speaking in person (or any time really, we're always looking for feedback).

Just a thought,

What I would note is that we have significant test coverage on the Mattermost server and hundreds of manual tests run for each release, so the quality of the end product is generally high, even if the React code isn't pristine.

I would say the Mattermost project is closer to the beginning than it is to the end. Significant refactoring is on our roadmap, and we'd highly welcome help.

it33··on Ask HN: What good open source projects written in React that I can learn from?
Hi @oelmekki,

Could you share more on your issues with how Mattermost implements React?

it33··on Workplace by Facebook opens to sell enterprise social networking to the masses
Hi @mcmoose75, highly appreciate the feedback.

Our open source community is always looking to improve and all feedback helps.

May I ask how your experience was on the web with Mattermost?

Regarding mobile performance, may I also ask what iPhone model and network speed you're using?

We publish mobile benchmarks, and I'm just wondering if your results are the same or different: https://docs.mattermost.com/deployment/push.html#mobile-perf...

The Mattermost iOS app works best on a fast connection. To accommodate slow connections, we're adding React Native (same technology as Facebook) to get competitive with Facebook's iOS app performance over time.

Here's the new Mattermost iOS app roadmap and backlog: http://forum.mattermost.org/t/react-native-roadmap/2339

Regarding the Mattermost desktop apps, on September 30 we had one of our largest product update addressing user issues. Here's the changelog: https://docs.mattermost.com/help/apps/desktop-changelog.html

Latest versions now available for download: http://about.mattermost.com/download/

Overall, we created an open source, self-hosted alternative to proprietary SaaS communication for organizations that want to minimize security, lock-in, and privacy risks.

We're constantly improving, thanks to hundreds of people around the world contributing to the project.

Whatever issue you're experiencing, please consider nominating an improvement to help us get to where you want us to be? https://www.mattermost.org/feature-ideas/
