iszomer··on Steam has been banned in China
"Steam has been banned in China" reads differently than the article's original title: "Steam Has Reportedly Been Banned In China".

FFS, get it right the first time. Initial impressions went from:

* "Oh really? Not likely but okay..", clicks thread

* Fast-reads comments top to bottom "fuck, what is this.."

* Reads actual article, "God damnit."

iszomer··on Twitter’s founder admits that shutting down the API was “worst thing we did”

iszomer··on New programming social media platform where your posts are NFT's
But not from the likes of web crawlers and archiving services.
iszomer··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file (2020)
I kept my password/credentials in a single .txt file on a truecrypt volume for a time, just to maintain the KISS principle.
iszomer··on PortableApps.com Hits 1 Billion App Downloads
I still remember downloading them onto a 3.5" floppy then onto a 100MB Zip for use on Windows 95.

Fond memories of tinyapps.org and analogx.com back in those days.

iszomer··on New programming social media platform where your posts are NFT's
The more I assimilate the ideas of NFT's in this context, the more I think in a dystopian mindset. People's opinions change over time and to encapsulate them into a permanent form to be recycled/reused as a form of attack against you years into the future is no bueno.

Here's a good visual representation of their early warning system back in 2011..

iszomer··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
It can when materialistic quality is a factor in purchasing decisions. For example, I recently had to buy a new rice cooker and based on my prior experiences of owning both Japanese and Chinese brands; the former outlasted the latter by thirty years. Just because it was cheap and easily sourceable doesn't discount expected quality assurances.

I'm not saying this applies to all Chinese made products but something I keep in mind for all future purchases.

iszomer··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
Ever bought something you believed was Made in Japan but found out later it was actually Made in China?
iszomer··on Apache Log4j bug: China’s industry ministry pulls support from Alibaba Cloud
This gave me a good chuckle.

* Google Project Zero researcher: "we found a bug!"

* NSA (internally): "Damnit, scratch that one off the list boys.."

iszomer··on Apache Log4j bug: China’s industry ministry pulls support from Alibaba Cloud
Learned a new word..
iszomer··on What is RF monitor-mode and why does it matter?
Some Android phones allow you to toggle this feature though it wrecks with MAC filtering at home and elsewhere if required.
iszomer··on The Dreamcast Legacy
What I found most fascinating about the Dreamcast was the extensible utility of the VMU cartridge slotted beneath the controller in that it not only served as storage for saved game data but as a heads-down display for ongoing gameplay. It also had the capability of being a standalone unit for mini games with it's replaceable coin battery.

What's even more interesting is the modding community attempts in repurposing them and keeping the Dream alive.

Understood, thank you.
iszomer··on Unloved by generations of soldiers, the MRE finds a fan base
I love this guy's channel. He's the only guy I've seen who has the guts to eat MRE's dated since WWII and perhaps older. The most recent I've seen was him comparing MRE's from the PRC (yes, China), Taiwan, USA, Russia, etc.
iszomer··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
How are store owners "allowing" their stores to be looted not considered as such, in relation to not prosecuting thefts under $950 by state law?
iszomer··on Harassment of Navy Destroyers by Drone Swarms Off CA Went on for Weeks
I'm sure many people fell for the optical illusion being sensationalized as well. IIRC, the Breaking Points podcast -bought- into the narrative trickery when they interviewed him.

Have you never built a computer before?
iszomer··on An iframe from googlesyndication.com tries to access the camera and microphone
Or use a computer without a mic/webcam permanently embedded or attached. I'm glad I'm constantly reminded that not having such peripherals can be a good thing.
iszomer··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
Best observed while grocery shopping in chinatowns or dense Asian marketplaces. I'd say 95% of canned and packaged products stocked are imports from China.
iszomer··on Incorrectly deleted from Facebook? Getting back on might take connections
> ..not that all of these share federated auth. You can not “sign in” on any other server than the one you registered with.

Oh definitely, I haven't conflated the two. The issue (at least for me) is I haven't found a way to limit mass propagation of content. Things I post in one federated instance may not jibe for others when it is a two-way street. Vice versa, maybe I don't want the exposure from more radical persuasions and/or content. Trying to reconcile the tradeoffs is also an issue in of itself as well.

iszomer··on Incorrectly deleted from Facebook? Getting back on might take connections
And a bit of a pain to separate and isolate yourself across it. I no longer have the inclination to blast myself everywhere on the intertubes. That era of "signing up for everything" is over.

Deleted my FB account last year but rarely used it to begin with. Never linked my IG account with FB either but am waiting for a reasonable excuse to delete it as well.

iszomer··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
Times have changed. I've lived through that era where much of my childhood years were living under the impending threat of a takeover but over the years, I've come to realize that the path laid by the late Lee Teng-hui had been a noble and justified one. If it weren't for him and history, I would have continued to believe in the KMT (I no longer do).
iszomer··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
I meant to mention that, thanks for clarifying.

iszomer··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
