iszomer··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Yes, they were everywhere including cereal boxex. But who didn't repurpose these free 3.5" floppy disks to store their stuff back in the day anyway?
iszomer··on Google Maps now requires WiFi scanning to use navigation
Or more pedantically, Google knows where your device is to a sufficiently high degree of precision. They can't stop me from just leaving that shit home or in a faraday cage.
iszomer··on mmWave radar, you won't see it coming
50/50 on privacy. Sure, privacy is cool but I pity the people whom must endure seeing the shapely flabs and curves of everyday people. That's got to have a toll on anyone's psych over time, as an "occupational hazard".
iszomer··on Twitter stores original account names, dox vulnerability via Twitter Spaces
Twitter seems to obfuscates recycled username creation dates too. I deleted an OG account from 2008 last year and now I see someone has claimed it but it's join date is from 2018.
iszomer··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
That is interesting; I didn't know European countries would prefer sugar over corn syrup. Do people there also have the opinion that real sugar is more subjectively superior in it's taste and aftertaste?
iszomer··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
This isn't really about the safe dosage of MSG for human consumption but the prolonged effects from folks whom are sensitive (or have developed a tolerance) to such exposure without even realizing it. I have had non-Asian friends whom have developed an allergy from it when it doesn't overly affect me at all but raises an interesting correlation not causation argument when applied in a broader food and cooking consumption context.
iszomer··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
Well, most Chinese restaurants usually dump MSG into their cooking. Back before Panda Express stopped claiming they used it, they would dump more than one teaspoons of it for a single entree on the fly.

MSG should be used as sparingly as possible (a pinch or less) and there are many kinds for specific ingredients, such as the original one made by Ajinomoto and more specialized ones for meats or vegetables only.

iszomer··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
This is anecdotal but drinking any soda causes me to pee harshly while tea has the opposite effect.
iszomer··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
The real difference is Coca Cola made with real sugar than the more common HFCS.
iszomer··on Ask HN: Do people still use DeviantArt?
Yes, the UX deteriorated over the years. DA was my main source for desktop wallpapers and Winamp skins until newer repositories sprang along, such as wallbase/wallhaven and most recently webamp as highlighted by a recent HN post.
iszomer··on In the end, you're treated like a spy, says MIT scientist
Well, some publishers are careful to note the distinction between `allegations` and `accusations` while others do not. Then there's the word `indictment` which I always assumed meant something after the fact but is instead actually defined as a "formal (lega) charge of an accusation".
iszomer··on In the end, you're treated like a spy, says MIT scientist
I don't think it is strictly a partisan issue but the potential precedence where a re-normalization event may occur. What struck me curious was a random quote quote from somewhere that reads: "conservatism is progressivism with speed limits". I mean, where have we seen instances where such precedences have been set in the grassroot moments all the way to our highest courts?

Crypto export control.

DeCSS.

SDMI.

Effects from twitter bots from the early years and now?

iszomer··on Malls adding apartments to offset dwindling numbers of shoppers
Redevelopments aren't uncommon though. I remember warehouses in San Francisco being converted into lofts while living there.
iszomer··on Malls adding apartments to offset dwindling numbers of shoppers
What if it was purposefully built that way like Emeryville's Bay Street location?
iszomer··on I read the federal government’s Zero-Trust Memo so you don’t have to
It may be true about 10 years ago but I imagine the heuristics to have been improved since; I remember being locked out of my Google account while abroad for a month and all it took was to log back in within my "country of origin".

Or a more recent example: my father forgot to bring his Android phone back abroad which subsequently locked him out of his account/services; had to wipe it for him to get his access back.

iszomer··on Study finds 82% of avocado oil rancid or mixed with other oils
Or worse, oil "recycled" from the gutter.
iszomer··on Spotify Removing Neil Young's Music
I think people should recognize the distinction of an artist from their work and know their boundaries. If I said I enjoyed Alec Baldwin's "work" in his numerous film roles, I don't necessarily want to know what they are like in real life. In today's day and age that aspect is simply unavoidable.
iszomer··on Surprises in the Bitcoin blockchain and how they are stored (2014)
Until that someone turned out to be a nation-state, case in point the still-ongoing story of J.A.
iszomer··on Facebook promised poor countries free internet: People got charged anyway
I think the harder issue would be to abandon their numerous other "subsidiaries"..
iszomer··on Surprises in the Bitcoin blockchain and how they are stored (2014)
This reminded me of Keybase where they signed and published [0] their root Merkle tree to the Bitcoin blockchain, as part of their server security mechanism. It was an ingenious idea at first until when it came to signature revocations. Even though they have the mechanism for that too, the data itself is still stored onto the blockchain forever with no "garbage collection" on deprecated data, outside of Keybase's control.

iszomer··on Gemini is Solutionism
I think if you want to further limit yourself than Gemini yet maintain some of the semblance of the existing modern web, you can go the Beaker Browser [1] route.

iszomer··on Google Drive flags file only containing “1” for copyright infringement
"it's not a bug, it's a feature!"
iszomer··on Winamp Skin Museum (Interactive)
There is a feature in Winamp (as well as QMMP) that lets you double the size of it's UI making your custom skins more legible.

Found titipoco again. I know I have a backup of it on a CD-R but no longer have an optical drive to read them..

iszomer··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I've had this happen before with my OG GMail account -- the one when we needed an invite to sign up. Back in the day there were no "account security" beyond the username and password, not even 2FA, backup codes, security questions, etc.

At least Google doesn't recycle usernames unlike other services and account retention is trivially automatic if you use an Android phone.

iszomer··on How trust undermines science
It matches mine: A general chemistry lab where we were tasked to grow crystals and attempt to write formal reports of our scientific experiences. If experiences didn't match with current expected outcomes, we still recorded our observational data and tried hypothesizing on conditions of reason for divergent results.
iszomer··on Founder of The Infraud Organization hacking group arrested in Moscow – source
I wonder if what we perceive as global theater is actually just leveraging concessions in the background, a weird parallel to "informants" being whisked away as if they've exceeded their operational life cycle or purpose; a pazzi.
iszomer··on 10.1-Inch RPI All-in-One PC Review with Raspberry Pi 4
Yes, while the deprecated version is still on the Google Play store. If you were using a chromebook, you would be getting the same deprecated version. There is a way to sideload the F-droid version without going developer mode or compromising ChromeOS' security but it depends on crostini support.

If your chromebook supports crostini though, installing F-Droid/Termux would be quite moot.

iszomer··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
Not how I imagined a "recycling center" to actually be an overseas landfill.

iszomer··on Google could face class action lawsuit over free G Suite legacy account shutdown
I was notified back in 2020 and decided to just can the (free) service. The most tedious thing I ever did was to go through my password manager and find every online service account that tied to my GSuite email address for the past decade and either change the email address or deprecate them entirely.

What was most interesting of my particular setup was having my GSuite email address forwarded to my regular GMail account and having the ability to compose emails on behalf of the GSuite email address. When I did log into the actual GSuite account, it had close to 5k~ unsolicited emails caught in the spam filter that never got forwarded.
