Companies created these traps not to screw customers but to thwart fraudsters. There are SO many worldwide - see annual fraud loss stats.

Paypal and many other companies that trade in valuables have to put up protections because there are almost no reprecussions for perpetrators in certain foreign countries.

isubkhankulov··on NIMBYs aren't just shutting down housing
Curious where this might be - assuming NYC?
isubkhankulov··on Claude Code for Infrastructure
In practice, does that happen? Usually companies try to bring the best of both and build from there.
isubkhankulov··on 'Amelia': the AI-generated British schoolgirl, a far-right social media star
Thats because the character was originally created for a UK government-backed game designed to help young people recognise and resist right-wing ideology.

The right then took the character and made it their ironic symbol.

isubkhankulov··on SFPark: Interactive map of SF parking regulations
There’s a pretty good, mostly free app called SpotAngels that handles most, if not all, of these parking rules.
isubkhankulov··on Most renters shut out of energy-saving upgrades – study
I would support a law that makes this a required disclosure in rental listings, like asbestos. In some cities, commercial buildings are issues a public facing grade on their energy efficiency. Why not other forms of commercial real estate like multifamily?

The status quo is the energy costs are hidden and only revealed one month after you move in.

Polymarket and other prediction markets dont take risk on the trades. Two sides are needed to make a market so you’re likely to get your payout. So all the people taking the “safe” bet lose their collateral and the winners get the proceeds if the unlikely event happens.

It’s not really a pendulum. A law with unintended consequences needs to be adjusted or repealed: Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)
isubkhankulov··on Calling All Hackers: How money works (2024)
The $100 does become a liability on your balance sheet. You’re right that interest doesnt and is an expense.

In the context of this post, does it matter? He’s not teaching bookkeeping here. He’s explaining the time value of money.

isubkhankulov··on Nvidia to buy assets from Groq for $20B cash
There have been at least a half dozen of these deals in the past 1-2 years including Google “licensing” CharacterAI to pull their founders back into Google as valued employees.

In the deal mentioned above: my guess is that preferred class shareholders and common shares got paid out but the common shareholders had such a low payout that it rounded down to zero for most employees.

This can happen even in a regular acquisition because of the equity capital stack of who gets paid first. Investors typically require a 1x liquidation preference (they get their investment back first no matter what).

isubkhankulov··on Anthropic: You can't change your Claude account email address
There are vendors like Emailage that somehow determine the age of email addresses. Very useful because fraudsters tend to buy credit cards and bank accounts, then need to complete the identity by registering an email address for that identity.

Historically, outlook emails have been very easy for this compared to gmail addresses, which require phone numbers, etc.

isubkhankulov··on Ensuring a National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence
Yes, dominance is preferred. Countries’ resources aren’t evenly distributed, and this fact determines foreign policy more than anything else.

There’s no world govt or global authority. Every country must look after its own interests.

Having every country cooperate requires trusting some entity as a global enforcer, one that wont abuse their unchecked power. Obviously, america has played this role since ww2 but not without plenty of mistakes and oversights.

We as humans haven’t found an alternative to this yet.

isubkhankulov··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
The fiat financial system (aka wall st and main st banking) is heavily regulated on a state and federal level.

Yet after over a decade, the government explicitly did not regulate crypto despite significant overtures from the industry. Nothing other than enforcement actions, until very recently.

This, to me, implies that the government does not want to regulate it proactively because they don’t want to legitimize it.

isubkhankulov··on How I use every Claude Code feature
Completely agree. The quoted strategy only works for small hobbyist codebases.

I can see this becoming a trend. People putting badges on their repo as to how artisanal, organic and “authentic” their code is.

The current doctor workforce is limited by a congressional cap on Medicare-funded educational slots. Apparently it was established in 1997 to prevent a surplus.

Of course, the opposite happened because of demographics and increased lifespans.

isubkhankulov··on Flock's gunshot detection microphones will start listening for human voices
Completely agree. Generally speaking, America’s homicide closure rate isn’t great compared to other western countries and is unfortunately trending downward in recent years.

I can certainly understand concerns about privacy but the other sides of this discussion should not be ignored.

isubkhankulov··on I accidentally became PureGym’s unofficial Apple Wallet developer
Does this post read like an LLM wrote it to anyone else? Not a big deal if it does but it feels like it’s trying too hard.
isubkhankulov··on If you're unemployed and looking to build with others, we made something for you
Great concept and I see why this would be a great community. However, the pricing tier for professionals and founders feels steep at $50/month, even for those with steady income.

I'd love to try it first to evaluate the value. Will you offer a trial period or money back guarantee? It's hard to commit and invest time without that.

isubkhankulov··on OpenAI charges by the minute, so speed up your audio
Transcripts get much more valuable when one diarizes the audio beforehand to determine which speaker said what.

I use this free tool to extract those and dump the transcripts into a LLM with basic prompts: https://contentflow.megalabs.co

isubkhankulov··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Medvedev is like the US’s Lindsey Graham. Of all the politicians, they are to be least trusted due to their absurd hawkish takes.
isubkhankulov··on Harvard Law paid $27 for a copy of Magna Carta. It's an original
A good chunk of that is illiquid because it is capital invested in funds that may or may not be priced/valued accurately. And Harvard has $7-8B in outstanding debt. If there’s a severe recession or crisis, it’s not clear that Harvard will sail smoothly through it without some turbulence. Though i’m not implying they would sell some these priceless assets.

isubkhankulov··on How the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg Got Added to the White House Signal Chat

isubkhankulov··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
If Russia is powerful enough to take over Europe, how can Ukraine possibly win?
isubkhankulov··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
That may be one of the problems with bitcoin as legal tender and official state currency but not a problem with Bitcoin itself, quite the opposite: as evidenced by the genesis block’s embedded message: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”
isubkhankulov··on Meta is killing off its AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles
That’s just going to drive more fraud to the receiver’s side. For example, one can pay for goods and receive them, then reverse the payment. This already is a huge percentage of fraud that businesses have to deal with, and there is a large industry built around preventing it. Fighting fraud (and other crimes) requires vigilance from all parties.
