ismailmaj··on Let futures be futures
What about higher order library functions, since calling a green function from a red context is bad and we have no way to guarantee that a function is blue and not green, does this mean the function needs to be unsafe? It would be nice if the conversion from red to green would be done implicitly by the language where there is no ambient executor available, but I'm not sure what would be the implications for intra-task concurrency.
ismailmaj··on Don't pass structs bigger than 16 bytes on AMD64
The function could accept an universal reference instead of an rvalue reference, this avoids the dance the caller has to do to pass a copy.

IMO it's hard to beat pass by value considering both performance and cognitive load.

ismailmaj··on Linux hits nearly 4% desktop user share on Statcounter
What's preventing me from going all in to Linux desktop is software only available in windows and HDR, it seems KDE plasma 6 is going to ship HDR this year, so it might be just enough for me to not care about the rest.
ismailmaj··on Why does unsafe multithreaded std:unordered_map crash more than std:map?
I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Rust crate left_right[1].

It's also a map that supports multiple readers AND a writer.

It does this by maintaining two maps, one used by the writer and one used by the readers and atomically swap the two when useful, the cool part is that reads are wait-free but the cost is at least double memory usage and slow writes (twice the work).

Congrats! I was wondering where you'd go after announcing that you were looking for a job at FOSDEM.

ismailmaj··on When Rust hurts
The common scenario for f and g to consume x is that x is a smart pointer type e.g. Rc/Arc.

to make it clear that the clone is "cheap", some Rust developer prefer using `Arc::Clone(&x)` over `x.clone()`.

stuck for 20 minutes on lvl 6 for the optimal solution, 10/10 would recommend
ismailmaj··on You can run Rust code in a Jupyter notebook
I stopped using evcxr when I realized that I could get the same instant feedback with rust-analyzer and a properly configured IDE.

Maybe it can be useful for data exploration with polars but I still prefer Python for that.

ismailmaj··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
It might be that they use simple in relative terms.

Linux could be considered simple given the problem it's trying to solve and yaml complex.

ismailmaj··on Blitsort: A fast, in-place stable hybrid merge/quick sort
pdqsort by Orson Peters is used in Rust std for `sort_unstable`.
