ismail··on Ask HN: What's your learning strategy?
> That might be how you learn, which is a good thing to know, but the presentation of your personal understanding of yourself come off like “this is the way for all”, which gives me the yucks.

Not sure why you assume OP is speaking about his own personal experience?

I am unsure what OP background is, but I will assume he knows what he is taking about.

there are theories of the mind that actually supports this view.

It goes back to early attempts at AI [0], and different perspectives on this also caused a split amongst researchers.

> If I can express it in simple language in a way that hangs together, and go into detail about complicated parts of the system, I’m getting somewhere.

What you have said does not actually contradict what OP has, but rather could be used to support what he said.

Yet it seems you believe it contradicts him?

ismail··on Ask HN: What books have you read that have changed your life?
Curious, besides this book on wealth creation, what other books have you read?
ismail··on Ask HN: What is one book you would recommend everyone to read?
This idea sounds like “tiny habits”, elaborated in the book by BJ Fogg? Have you read both? If so which would you recommend?
ismail··on J&J tried to get federal judge to block publication of Reuters story
Are we surprised when people invent far fetched conspiracies (i.e COVID 5G)? This is a symptom of a much larger problem we have in society. Morally bankrupt leadership and ethically questionable companies. J&J is right up there.
ismail··on Do things, tell people (2012)
Thanks for the link to the tough soles site.

As an avid hike, Ireland was not in my bucket list. will definitely add it to the list.

ismail··on Moderna’s HIV vaccine has officially begun human trials
Your comment insinuates a conspiracy theory, equating OP comment with theories of 5g causing COVID. It does not add much to the discussion and comes across as dismissive.

My experience is that as soon as we make a judgement call about someone, and put them in a pre-conceived box that we do agree with, we are unable to learn.

I went and re-read OP post. nothing in it is close to what you are insinuating.

Yes there may be some unsubstantiated claims, or calling out faucci but shutting down discussions with comments like yours are unhelpful.

ismail··on Ask HN: Where are you going to find long-form content online these days?
How do you avoid the problem of low signal to noise ratio?

Some books in the popular business press can be reduced to several pages, with the core idea, rationale, and examples. Yet they all end up being longer than needed with tons of exposition.

ismail··on Five Levels of Hype
As someone who used to have a similar level of "humility", i always felt uncomfortable doing self-promotion. You will also notice that others are much more serious about self-promotion. To the level where there is not much substance when you investigate. I have resigned to the view that, this is the society we live in. Things may always not be as they seem, one has to look closer and recognize the diamonds in the rough.
ismail··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
+1 on Huberman. Specifically the episodes on sleep.
ismail··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
surreal to read this. I had never heard of memetic theory.

A year ago , I was struggling to describe an experience and needed a word to describe it while journaling.

I called it “Wantingness” at the time! Going to go back and review my journal entries.

ismail··on Self-Organizing Teams
I actually think this is a false dichotomy, and a common misunderstanding. You do get a hierarchy in a self-organising team. The self-organisation will re-produce itself, and produce a hierarchy with components from within the system itself.

This is how we view it in my company. The difference between self-organizing and traditional methods of organizing is the following:

In traditional methods of organizing, the hierarchy is fixed, and embedded within a specific role. i.e a Product Owner. Usually it is also imposed from outside.

With self-organization power is "fluid" , in that it shifts based on the circumstance and context. The system itself will internally produce the hierarchy. This hierarchy is emergent based on the specific context, in order to deal with the specific situation.

To put it simply, a self-organising system is much more adaptable. The hierarchy and structure is emergent. Organisation is not imposed from outside, but from within. The hierarchy itself can shift from moment to moment.

ismail··on Ask HN: Do you still use Clubhouse app?
I too stopped using it. Too much noise, very little signal. There were some interesting parts. Like listen for an hour to get an interesting perspective, story , viewpoint of 5 mins.

It really depends on who was in the room, and the ability of the people on stage to stimulate interesting conversation.

ismail··on Mary Catherine Bateson: Systems Thinker
I would not called Systems thinking out of date [0]. I would rather say some approaches to systems thinking are now out of date. There have been multiple generations of systems thinking approaches.

Let us take cybernetics as an example, we began with 1st order cybernetics (command and control), then moved on to 2nd order cybernetics, and now we are moving towards 3rd order and 4th order cybernetics.

Similarly for systems thinking, we had the "hard approaches" to systems thinking which viewed the system as "out there" (i.e Cybernetics) then it evolved into 'soft systems' approaches.

We have seen a shift from functionalist approaches, to interpretive then emancipating and now post-modern approaches. We are moving towards ethics, aesthetics, perception, eco-systems etc.

Complex Adaptive systems that Snowden writes about is a subset of these systemtic approaches. Put another way, yes there are some approaches to systems thinking which may be 'dated' (i.e Hard systems), there is quite a bit that is very relevant today.

[0] Here is some of my writing on this subject:

https://www.notion.so/zyelabs/Systemic-Approaches-HN-0d22752...

Edit: Quote from the paper attached in the link above.

"The VSM & Cybernetics was heavily influenced by Claude Shannon's discovery of information theory. The 10th theorem of Shannon is the basis for the law of requisite variety. Further the lines drawn within the VSM could be regarded as the communication channels."

ismail··on The lab-leak origin claim for Covid-19 is in the news, but it’s still fact-free
I have to agree. thebulletin article lays out the evidence pretty clearly unlike this one.
ismail··on Hyperinflation is already here [video]
If I had to venture an analysis it would be.

The difference between Zimbabwe printing a ton of money and us printing a ton of money boils down to social capital, cultural capital, political capital & influence. The US has all of these in spades, which Zimbabwe never had. This allows the us to exert an outsized amount of influence on shaping the story, which in turn allows it to print money with impunity.

ismail··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Thanks I did not know this existed.

I have started a small side project which is somewhat related. I started it because I saw the beneficial aspects of walks and wellness from my own journey over the last few years. It is something I wish existed in the world but does not. The idea seemed so small and inconsequential that i thought it could make a good non-profit that has a significantly positive impact on wellness. There is a model in where it would be self-sustaining. If anyone is keen to chat about the intersection of wellness, physical activity and walking drop me a message!

ismail··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Prayer, physical activity (hiking, gym, cycling etc.), meditation, time with my family, friends and colleagues, doing something creative (work&hobbies)

I have been using a Sony WH-1000XM3s for about 10 months now. Got it just before WFH and has been a life saver.

Question: anyone else feels fatigued after a long period with ANC on? Ears ringing after?

Because of this I use mine sparingly.

ismail··on SARS-CoV-2 spike D614G variant confers enhanced replication and transmissibility
Thanks for this link. From the article she states:

“Mutations that alter any of the following can lead to a new strain:

pathogenicity virulence immunogenicity.”

And

“ Another way that the term strain is used is when a particular variant of the virus (the virus with a specific set of mutations) ”

This sounds like the mutation referenced in the paper could be considered a “new strain” given the above?

“ Until there is clear evidence supporting functional or immunogenic differences among the variants, it is appropriate to consider all of these lineages of the same virus.”

ismail··on New study suggests handwriting engages the brain more than typing
I am deciding if I should cancel my order or not. I like the idea of a dedicated almost paper like feel. I hate the idea of my notes in some cloud service. You do not need anything to read a physical journal other than the book itself. Is there anyway to back note up to a physical copy (prints?
ismail··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
My dad bought us a commodore64 at a market. He did not get the tape drive, so it could not save any programmes. It came with a manual that demonstrated how to code in basic. I recall spending hours typing out code to get a ball bouncing across the screen. From there I convinced my dad to get us a computer. Never look d back since then! Funnily enough I got into Linux by picking up floppy disks with Slackware at a market as well!
ismail··on Ask HN: Teaching kids how to think?
This answer is gold. I came to respond but this answer hits the proverbial nail on the head.

You do not teach a kid to think, you provide and environment that allows them to. They will learn to do this on their own.

ismail··on Giant Pacific Octopus
I just finished watching a Netflix documentary about an octopus. The kids loved it.

It was probably one of the most fascinating documentaries I have ever seen. What a story & some amazing footage. I could not help but think that octopus are very intelligent.
