ishanjain28··on Pointermove event latency in web browsers
1-2ms(avg) in FF on Linux on a 60Hz Display. 2.5-3.5 in Brave in a similar setup.
ishanjain28··on India announces nationwide lockdown to stop spread of coronavirus
Modi didn't say anything but this was decided at a local level. In my town,

1. Vegetable vendors will be open from 6 am to 10 am. 2. Grocery shops will be open from 5pm to 7pm 3. Hospitals/clinics/chemist shops will remain open as usual.

ishanjain28··on How to Find New Music
I am surprised no one mentioned https://discoverquickly.com/ yet.

It's basically Spotify's recommendation system with a bunch more parameters for you to play with and the UI is designed so you can go through the recommendations quickly.

ishanjain28··on “Why Using WhatsApp Is Dangerous“
Groups on Telegram can have 100k+ members. Enabling Signal like E2E encryption scheme and ensuring you can have that many members in a group is basically impossible. See this video to understand why, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0_lcKrUdWg

I guess they could enable E2E encryption in private messages but being able to sync conversation across different telegram clients you are logged into is one of the features. Enabling E2E encryption by default will probably break this. I guess they could try and implement it like Signal has done for Private messages but I don't know why they have not done that already.

ishanjain28··on Ask HN: Do you curate links/bookmarks?
Yes, I do.

I put every blog, site I want to follow on my freshrss instance(rss.ishanjain.me).

I use Reeder(on iOS) and FeedMe(on Android) to read those posts. When I like something, I add it to Pocket where it gets archived and stuff and I can revisit it later at any point.

I use Browser bookmarks to store interesting websites, Like tools, Stuff other than articles basically.

ishanjain28··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
Okay point taken.

Although, The "celebrities"(I am more interested in following Engineers, Computer Scientists. These guys are my "celebrities") I would want to follow are not on facebook/instagram(Or they don't share anything I'd be interested in on those platforms).

ishanjain28··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
This just makes me think why do I need a social network. I never did anything remotely useful on Facebook/Instagram(Although, Twitter is useful).

Why would I want to use this?

ishanjain28··on ShareDrop – P2P File Transfer Using WebRTC
I don’t like webrtc based solutions because the speeds are subpar.

My phone and iPad are on the same WiFi network and both have a link speed of roughly 400mbps.

Using trebleshot(a oss file sharing tool like shareit/midrop) I was able to get 30-40MBps which is pretty insane speed if you ask me.

But sharedrop didnt’t work. It failed with “could not establish direct WiFi connection with peer” error and with snapdrop that someone else suggested I could only get speeds of up to 15mbps(or roughly 2MBps).

I only use trebleshot on android and trebleshot via the web interface to transfer between iOS and android. It’s the fastest tool I have ever used and I strongly recommend it if you are looking for a tool like that.

TLDR being, webrtc based tools for p2p file sharing suck.

ishanjain28··on Ask HN: Do we need Google captcha?
I started using Buster[1] few months back with Google Speech to Text API. I use Firefox on Linux and I hadn't had to manually fill a captcha in all these months. Highly recommended. :)

I get 60 free minutes/month from Google Speech to text API. So, It's pretty much free to use.

ishanjain28··on Ask HN: How comfortable do you feel using cloud-based password managers?
I have a self hosted bitwarden instance. I feel very comfortable using it and encourage my friends and family to use it as well.
ishanjain28··on Decentralized DNS with the Handshake Naming System
I tried it right after he suggested doing that.

Try this command, It contains a list of peers that were working few hours back. Maybe they are still online.

  ./hnsd -r 127.0.0.1:53 -s ajgkxfe47u6wwyvyh7qixbdddvjxcqbs2oxwr5attq45yj72s5pcs@54.201.46.33:13038,akudgzg2wntfjucsodyvz44h76qae7xrtuix6wc6fc22cx5jll6fe@165.227.52.206:13038,ajaqq7jwqrwixmvl64tzi3qfi7ynj3hmmtzmkyubtrljh4mwmh7ie@165.22.151.242:13038,ap77bve4acntajehkvqc33bvlsi27ka6l2xte4fhn2ghuwx44fsxc@18.236.58.201:13038

ishanjain28··on Decentralized DNS with the Handshake Naming System
Hey! So, I thought this was cool and wanted to try it out.

Compiled hnsd and tried to run it on local machine and an ec2 spot instance but it keeps failing to connect to it's (hardcoded?) peers.

I keep seeing this,

ishanjain28··on Top UCLA Doctor Denounces HBO's “Chernobyl” as Wrong and “Dangerous”
People are taking the wrong takeaway from the show. The point of Chernobyl(HBO) was not to show the dangers of Nuclear reactors, It was to show, The Lies, Politics and other disgusting elements can and will ruin lives of thousands of people.

Chernobyl was the result of lies and deception. Soviet Russia's wanted to be number 1 everywhere while completely disregarding how they got there, That is what led to Chernobyl.

People, Including the Doctor have taken it incorrectly in my humble opinion.

They even had a separate podcast where they discussed exactly this and more details related to the series in great detail. Look it up on Pocketcast or whatever app you use to listen to podcasts and you'll find it.

ishanjain28··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
There was an study done on some students from top universities in US.

The question they were given was, If they would work for Facebook given all kinds of scandals they were involved in. A lot of people said they wouldn't work for Facebook but later when some of them received offers nobody declined those offers and went on to work for Facebook.

I am wondering if the same experiment on people already working in industry will yield different results.

ishanjain28··on How I use my Raspberry Pis to help me work on with my side projects
I have never measured it. At worst the main power has gone down for a 2-3 hours and it lasted at least as much. I don't have a USB power meter to measure the power taken by the Rpi so I can not give you an exact number but I would guess it to be at least around 5-10 hours if not more.

Edit: Someone linked pijuice project. I went to their website and according to them, Their 10k mah version lasts 24+ hours

> Onboard 1820 mAh off the shelf Lipo / LiIon battery for ~4 to 6 hours in constant use! (with support for larger Lipo Battery of 5000 or 10,000 mAH+ to last up to 24 hrs +)

https://uk.pi-supply.com/products/pijuice-standard

So, I would say 2i would probably last about the same?

ishanjain28··on How I use my Raspberry Pis to help me work on with my side projects
I have been using Mi powerbank 2i for my Rpis for last 9 months or so. I have had zero issues with it. The advantage of using 2i are,

1. It's dirt cheap than any other solution I found($15, I use 10k mah version)

2. I can plug RPi to it and I can plugin a charger in 2i. When the main power cuts off, It'll instantly switch over to battery with 0 downtime. I think this is called passthrough charging)

3. It can provide 2.5 or 3.5 amps(not sure about exact value) output

4. It has two ports

ishanjain28··on Algo: A set of Ansible scripts that simplify the setup of a personal IPSEC VPN
It is. But just one tiny app for VPN isn't too bad if that VPN does not ruin internet bandwidth.
ishanjain28··on Algo: A set of Ansible scripts that simplify the setup of a personal IPSEC VPN
I don't know. I briefly used IPsec when I stopped using OpenVPN and I was looking for alternatives. The setup for IPsec on the server was slightly annoying. I used a Github project that sets up everything for me but the script didn't do everything.

And I have observed(from just using IPsec and wireguard on my phone) that wireguard is quite good(maybe even better) than IPsec at not annihilating internet bandwidth.

ishanjain28··on Algo: A set of Ansible scripts that simplify the setup of a personal IPSEC VPN
How do you decide what vpn tech to use?

I was using openvpn and then switched to wireguard because openvpn was consuming a lot of power on my phone.

Why would I want to use Ipsec?
