irishloop··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
I... don't know what I expected
irishloop··on Parents are teaming up to delay their children's first cell phone
I don't agree with the notion that time spent dreaming is wasted. There is more to life than being productive and focused. There's no prize at the end of life.

There is a balance, of course. We can't just laze around all day for both psychological and survival reasons.

In the end, though, time spent enjoying yourself is rarely a waste.

irishloop··on Mint Is Shutting Down
> Credit Karma is thrilled to invite all Minters to continue their financial journey on Credit Karma, where they will have access to Credit Karma’s suite of features, products, tools and services, including some of Mint’s most popular features.

SOME of Mint's most popular features

I've been using Mint for like 15 years and I hate this and will go out of my way to never give Intuit a dollar

irishloop··on A Call for Developers – Jellyfin
It is a bit funny to me that reading this, I can only guess that Jellyfin is a... Plex clone? I guess the writer assumes I already know about/want to improve the product which IS its intended audience, but coming from HN I'm just like what... is... it...
irishloop··on An Introduction to APIs
Precisely right. Standards work cause everyone understands them. I know a PUT request is almost certainly an update of some kind. I know a POST makes something.

For most shit you wanna do, its view, edit, delete, its really not that complicated.

irishloop··on Let the internet be grimy
Who decides what's nothing or what isn't? Shall the bully be the arbiter of what is pain or what counts? Can people just say anything and if you don't like it its your problem?
irishloop··on Threads, an Instagram app
I do wonder how much stickiness Twitter has for professional niche communities. Don't they also enjoy shitposting? Isn't what makes it kinda work -- the interconnectedness of the platform?
irishloop··on Threads, an Instagram app
I don't see any evidence Musk understands what made Twitter great, either.

At this point, someone just needs to stand up a Twitter clone that can handle the traffic because I think most regular Twitter users are having a much worse experience on there now -- from my own anecdotal experience as a semi-heavy twitter user.

irishloop··on Threads, an Instagram app
But Twitter is just so much objectively worse than it used to be, the user experience is mostly a nightmare for the very people who made Twitter so fun to begin with. The posters have to go somewhere.

Its not that anybody likes Zuck, but they also don't think Zuck will cozy up with Nazis quite so... obviously?

We all make choices every day about choosing the lesser of two evils. That's all this is.

irishloop··on MrBeast has become a viral sensation for his acts of altruism
Is he kind of a bullshit artist? Sure.

Can I think of a thousand worse ways that people make money every day?

I sure can.

irishloop··on MrBeast has become a viral sensation for his acts of altruism
But if we never celebrate altruism or philanthropy, are we not, perhaps, discouraging it? Don't we want to instill these cultural values of giving?

It seems to me that keeping quiet is a kind of purity ritual that perhaps does more harm than good as well.

Personally I don't care about MrBeast one way or the other, he doesn't affect my life in any appreciable way, if he makes money giving other people money, cool, I can think of a thousand worse ways to make money.

irishloop··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I think there is probably a non trivial gap in terms of how comfortable it is to wear a VR helmet vs a pair of glasses
irishloop··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple’s Vision Pro headset
What does that mean? They actually produce specific Quest glasses?
irishloop··on Albert Camus
I had an English professor who turned me into Camus and it changed my life. It put a word (Absurdism; at the time, Existentialism) to my own worldview. Before that, I was just an atheist. I knew God wasn't real (imho).

But I didn't know where that left me. Camus shined a bright light on that terror and shrugged and it resonated with me and it still does, and I am eternally grateful to that Professor and to Camus himself.

I am sure there are better philosophies -- more Humanistic -- but Absurdism has always struck me as the most "true." It still resonates with me today.

irishloop··on Albert Camus
I am not really sure why the advancement of science really changes the equation. You will surely die as the next human. The advancement of science does not spare you this suffering.
irishloop··on Nyxt: The Hacker's Browser
I am not sure thats true. vim does give you extra utility in its availability on a wide variety of server-type platforms, but I suspect most vim users are using it actively for development on their local (or docker etc) boxes
irishloop··on Ideas That Changed My Life
> The world always makes sense. But it can be confusing.

I just don't agree with this at all. I think its folly to assume the world will always make sense. As humans we seek to make sense of things, but not everything fits into our cognitive little boxes.

irishloop··on Mark Zuckerberg: “Please Resign” (2010)
Honestly think this is quite common at the CEO level. I swear it's like a requirement, founders have to be a little bit deluded into thinking they're changing the world and not just... starting a business.
irishloop··on If you find this world bad, you should see some of the others (1977) [pdf]
I think some of it is simply that PKD was prolific, and created a lot of ideas pretty quickly.

There are other huge authors in sci fi but I feel like a great many of them stuck to a single universe or at least thematically kind of stuck around in similar areas, whereas PKD created just a truly insane amount of ideas.

Even Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep is almost like 3 sci fi novels in one and its not even that long.

irishloop··on Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats

irishloop··on The Twitter Files
Am I the only one who thinks its pretty fucked up of the business owner to be like, "oh, Hunter Biden left his laptop here? Might as well... give it to the New York Post"

Like wtf?

irishloop··on Criticizing Computers
Exactly. Most of us write software for non-programmers.

Pipeable software is great for developers and computer scientists.

But for laypeople, they need a UI. They don't understand -- and don't want to understand -- the machinations behind the process. They have a business process and they want the software to model that business process.

And that business process is not going to be executable on a command line.

irishloop··on Twitter sources say company reached out to fired people asking them to come back

irishloop··on You will ask many, many questions
That's why you spread your questions out, so no one person knows everything you don't know
irishloop··on Living Like Nothing Matters
I do think the example is interesting because it gives us a person who, at the time, seemed so very important -- and no longer was. It gives us that metaphor of false importance.

That being said, I would agree that this post perhaps not quite achieve the philosophical thought of Albert Camus :)

irishloop··on ShotSpotter requests to be held in contempt rather than disclose its methodology
I live in a city where ShotSpotter is often used to detect gun violence and it seems, at least from local reporting, that it's often accurate in detecting gunfire and often finds victim(s) on the scene, often uncooperative with police.

In so far as I can tell, it seems to be doing its job, though I understand there are several institutions here which obviously are not trustworthy.

irishloop··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
I see a lot of discussion here about Wirecutter and/or Consumer Reports being untrustworthy. But I am not sure "reviews" are a solvable problem, really.

The human element of perception is inherent to reviewing products. I might think something is genuinely better than you because it meets my needs better. Or because you got a bad part in yours through sheer bad luck. Or I had a migraine that day.

I usually just try to google whatever product I am trying to understand and read a few articles and try to at least hone in on what might be the most authentic or at least reviews that are well-written and seem to care about the product.

But there's no perfect system. I went through this whole process trying to figure out the best mattress and at some point you just gotta give up and say hey they're all basically glorified piles of hay let's just do this.

irishloop··on What we lost
I find both sides of the "remote vs in-person" argument rather exhausting and ridiculous.

Of course, both formats have issues. Personally, I like a hybrid remote/local work life.

I thought I wanted fully remote, but it was simply too isolating for me. I like being able to shoot the shit at work with some semi-friends. I think it connects us and adds some value to the whole operation that makes it more than about work, but caring about the people you work with.

That being said, that's just my personal experience. What is good for me might not be good for you.

I too often see people say, "Oh the only people who like in-person work are managers who want to schedule pointless meetings" like hey maybe some people actually just have different needs than you and you shouldn't insult people who may have different experiences.

irishloop··on Get ahead by not shooting yourself in the foot
That's right. And not for its intrinsic value, but to impress others!
