ique··on Accepting payments is getting harder
With the old Stripe.js, you serve up the form but the Stripe javascript takes over the form and posts directly to Stripe, so your servers never see the data.

The new Stripe.js will render an iFrame, (Edit:) through which Stripe will send the data, which again posts to directly to stripe.

They basically behave the same way and will look the same way, the only difference is that the iFrame is in it's own Javascript "domain" so that if your site is infected with malicious javascript it can't take over the POST to stripe as easily (although that is debatable).

The former requires really high security requirements now and the latter requires almost none.

ique··on Accepting payments is getting harder
> There's no reason every web merchant should see credit card numbers.

The heightened requirements are actually for when you are using services that _don't_ let the merchant see the CC number. Like the "old" Stripe.js.

ique··on Accepting payments is getting harder
Definitely easier "on the whole" compared to 10 years ago, but harder compared to last year.
ique··on Let PJ Stay
What is actual grassroots movement then? It seems like the idea you're putting forth is "The majority of people getting H1-B get shitty lives so they shouldn't be allowed to come here at all."

ique··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2013)
I'm not entirely sure about the "usually", it may or may not be true. But to offer a different view here, I'm from Sweden and cost of living in Sweden is extremely low. If you have an apartment or house outside the capital it costs next to nothing, we have no health insurance costs, no education costs, food is not particularly expensive compared to the rest of the industrialized world and so people usually feel it's OK to offer a lower salary in Sweden on that argument.
ique··on Rails 4.0: Final version released
Your book for me is the de-facto standard Rails bible and it's what I always recommend to new learners. I find it very strange that it's not the top official recommendation.
ique··on Show HN: Radio - My first Mac app
Is it possible for non-apple developers to integrate with AirPlay? Because that would be a really nice feature to have!
ique··on Show HN: Delver, a natural language interface to your app
I think your three examples at the bottom, Data -> SQL -> Delver query, should all be on the same example. In the first table it's like a timesheet thing, in your SQL you're making a list of people and their number of purchases and in the third Delver query you're asking a number of questions.

I realize you might be aiming this application at people who actually can't read the SQL, but you're also saying "You're drowning in tedious reports." implying they actually use SQL and this is to replace it.

So make the examples consistent and give people some insight into how this works and what actual SQL query a question generates.

ique··on Chocolat 1.0 Released
I have personally never (thankfully) had to edit a log file larger then perhaps 10mb.. May I ask what you do if you open those kinds of files so often that you let that be the deciding factor in choosing editor?
ique··on OpenShift by Red Hat
How can this be free? If I host a massive application here, will they shut it down or rate limit or how can this work?
ique··on How useful is a Physics degree?
I am a Physics (specifically Engineering Physics) major who works with programming, and yes, you will definitely be able to compete.

Having studied math extensively, like function theory and a lot of linear algebra and combinatorics, you will be able to pick up on CS algorithms very fast. You might already have studied some without knowing it.

Physics is a broad subject that permeates the students brain with scientific thinking and teaches you how to understand stuff.

Of the 10-15 companies or so I've spoken to, they would all hire an Engineering Physics student for a CS position, given that they have an interest in programming and can show relevant basic skills in the field.

ique··on Circa is a programming language for live coding, in development
I say its stopped because it is lacking a lot to get it working on OS X, so its not "done", and the latest release is for 10.5
ique··on Circa is a programming language for live coding, in development
How can you have a website displaying a live-coding language, without a video displaying someone actually live-coding? :P

Seriously though, I'd love to see a video of someone doing live-coding. I've been looking for a good live-coding environment ever since I found fluxus[1], and subsequently found out that development of it had stopped.

ique··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
I couldn't find any (easily accessible) info about what it actually uses to communicate. Is it long-polling, websockets, something else?

What kind of browser compliance is there?

ique··on Yesod 1.0 - a robust, friendly, high performance web framework for Haskell
I'm getting the info from testing. I tried using Yesod for a while but kept getting this error:

"A tag name may not contain a slash. Perhaps you have a closing tag in your HTML."
Which you can find in the source for the parser as well:

    if '/' `elem` tn
then fail "A tag name may not contain a slash. Perhaps you have a closing tag in your HTML."
Maybe there's a way to work around this so you can use closed tags, but it sure wasn't obvious.
ique··on Yesod 1.0 - a robust, friendly, high performance web framework for Haskell
My problem with Hamlet is that using it would cause a lot of unneeded pains and errors. I have a team of consultants doing all HTML coding, and they've been doing HTML for years (and are thus accustomed to writing pure HTML). If they just happen to close a single tag anywhere in any page, the application crashes.

If that is robust, then I'm not sure what definition you are using.

ique··on DCPU-16 implementation in f#
This is in the storyline:

>In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers.

So I've assumed from the start that the D is for Deep, because the whole story is about this deep sleep stuff. But yeah, that's really just speculation. I don't think there's any official answer to it.

ique··on Notch's next game is an MMO
Has anyone decoded the name? He said it was related to 1 in a 64-bit system read in 16-bit with the wrong endianness, or something like that. I tried my hand at it briefly but gave up.
ique··on The C Conference
Wow, random. I'm also taking that course right now :P My last course at the school.
ique··on Notch gives his $3,000,000 Minecraft dividend to his employees
$120k is high enough to pay full taxes on anyway so no matter how they distribute it, they will very likely loose half to taxes.

ique··on Buildpacks - Run Anything on Heroku
I was actually looking at buildpacks a few weeks ago. I found a github repo that was using a custom buildpack, but there was no documentation at all about it then.

I wanted to create a buildpack to build a jekyll website and deploy, that should be a cinch to do with these custom buildpacks. No longer would I have to build the jekyll app locally (takes long time), I can just push and heroku builds it.

ique··on Handwriting to LaTeX maths
This works surprisingly well! It even made my crappy writing into the correct markup. Great for when you have a big equation to "translate" to LaTeX quickly or to just look up a character you don't know the name of.

I wish there was a function to upload an image or to capture an image via webcam or something like that. Then I could write it on paper and show it to the webcam and get the markup, or upload scans of notes to have them translated.

ique··on Super Cheap Virtual Private Servers - the Wild West of Hosting
I've been using DirectSpace [1] for quite some time now and I see no other mention of it.

I signed up when the 512mb instance was only $4/mo, but it seems they've upped it to $8/mo now. Anyway I haven't experienced any significant downtime or bad performance, but then I'm not doing anything important on it. I also have no clue about their customer service level since I've never used it.

ique··on Image Search Breakthrough: 0.98+ Precise Images of 500,000+ topics

ique··on Matrix Multiplication in Clojure vs Numpy
Even if we don't consider the difference in data structures here, they use wildly different algorithms. Numpy does all the matrix calculations by outsourcing it to BLAS[1] routines that are a mix of C/Assembly, just like the answers detail.

BLAS is not only written in more efficient code, it's different algorithms altogether. BLAS can do a lot of optimizations that brings the total FLOP count to below what's usually considered required for matrix multiplication. (2m*n^2)

ique··on The Haskell Platform 2011.4.0.0 is now available
Is there a change list anywhere? I can't seem to find any information about what's been updated on the site.
ique··on Haskell typeclasses: Classes, Jim, but not as we know them
Why is there so much content on Haskell coming out of Microsoft Research? I've seen multiple Haskell papers out of them and I think they're the initial developers on cloud haskell as well?

Does MS have any technology related to Haskell at all? Or is it just research for the sake of it?

ique··on Clojure Conj Slides
Are there going to be any videos released of the talks? I would have loved to attend but didn't have time to fly to the US this time.
