ipython··on Multiple commencement speakers booed for AI comments during graduation speeches
AI has a net negative perception in surveys across the US. It’s so unpopular that AI data center development is less popular than a nuclear power plant.

Yes I’d say this is more than representative of “every person” sentiment.

ipython··on At least 25 Flock cameras have been destroyed in five states since April 2025
Totally. Like, for example, the so-called throngs of roaming domestic terrorists setting Teslas on fire across the US. My dad still asks me if anyone has vandalized mine. (No, and I’m personally unaware of anyone who has had theirs vandalized. At least 1/3 of vehicles in my area are teslas)
ipython··on I broke AppLovin's mediation cipher protocol
I had no idea Apple exposed that information. And they're clear that the data _should not be sent off the device_:

> 35F9.1

> Declare this reason to access the system boot time in order to measure the amount of time that has elapsed between events that occurred within the app or to perform calculations to enable timers.

> Information accessed for this reason, or any derived information, may not be sent off-device. There is an exception for information about the amount of time that has elapsed between events that occurred within the app, which may be sent off-device.

> 8FFB.1

> Declare this reason to access the system boot time to calculate absolute timestamps for events that occurred within your app, such as events related to the UIKit or AVFAudio frameworks.

> Absolute timestamps for events that occurred within your app may be sent off-device. System boot time accessed for this reason, or any other information derived from system boot time, may not be sent off-device.

ipython··on Steve Jobs in Exile – New book on his years at NeXT Computer
It’s not the same at all. The only equivalence is firing people.
ipython··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
I think there’s some credence to the concept that more context == faster iteration cycles. Source code can be one major source of context.

I think “security through obscurity is no security” concept was aimed toward people not relying on obscurity alone as a security mechanism. And largely that message succeeded. But now we are in a rapid acceleration of capabilities (on both sides) where any advantage to one side will result in outsized gains, at least in the short term.

ipython··on Googlebook
I agree with you but you are missing the fact that a lot of people are shopping with ai.

My wife in fact just presented me with a spreadsheet generated by Claude of the jewelry she’d like to have.

So yes. I expect a lot of people will use ai to shop.

ipython··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
These releases are nothing new - this is why it’s so frustrating. Trump just takes credit for everything.

CIA releases from 2016: https://www.cia.gov/stories/story/take-a-peek-into-our-x-fil...

NARA files related to ufos: https://www.archives.gov/research/topics/uaps

UFO info from the UK: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/... (also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UFO_Files and https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ufo-reports-in-th...)

I can go on… if you care about ufos then believe me there’s way more info out there than this crappy release!! Again, there is no reason to publicize this except to draw attention away from … unpopular wars, economic trouble, high energy prices, you name it.

ipython··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
Have you looked through the “releases”? Ooooo! Blurry dots on the horizon combined with an “artist rendition” of an oblong flying object.

And believe me I so wish we could be visited by intelligent life. Maybe they can share some tips on how to reclaim sanity.

ipython··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
Or the vast grift… or the $1bn request for “ballroom” funding… or $1.5tn for the defense department… or the ballooning public debt at $40tn and counting, now cresting above 100% yearly gdp.

But hey! ALIENS!!

ipython··on Wi is Fi: Understanding Wi-Fi 4/5/6/6E/7/8 (802.11 n/AC/ax/be/bn)
At some point, you just can’t beat physics. For best results you need multiple aps anyway.
ipython··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
Technically he wasn’t charged with any copyright violations. See indictment: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/217117-united-states...
ipython··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
It would be easier to advocate for the reform of those laws if they were actually applied evenly.

I’m not calling for its use as a “retributive tool”. Just that it be applied evenly.

ipython··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
Just gonna say... Aaron Swartz faced years of prison time and ultimately decided to take his own life... for downloading scientific journal articles... to share freely with the world (aka not even profiting from it).

But a multi-billion dollar corporation downloading millions of copyrighted creative works so that they can reshape the entire labor market by training a new type of artificial intelligence model on that data set? Meh, sounds like Silicon Valley disruption, give the man a medal!

ipython··on Will you heed my warnings now?
I hard disagree with your assertion that moving to more secure encryption isn't difficult. It is insanely difficult, especially at global scale.
ipython··on The Hottest Phone for Kids Right Now Is a $100 Landline
Have an upvote. I have landlines for my kids. It was fun for about two weeks, then they had friends with FaceTime and you’re not able to compete with real time video conferencing.
ipython··on AI should elevate your thinking, not replace it
I’ve also seen along those lines “there is no compression algorithm for experience” - a nice summary of the hn posts from today.

ipython··on What's missing in the 'agentic' story: a well-defined user agent role
Who do you trust with the keys? In any well run organization you have multiple layers of controls. The same concept applies here and I think the gp commenter captured it very well.
ipython··on 'Hairdryer used to trick weather sensor' to win Polymarket bet
It is interesting, though, that a large bet was placed not long before the assassination attempt that paid out $550k. By definition, killing the leader does imply that they are no longer the political leader of the country.

It is entirely possible that there was causality in the forward direction if the bettor had inside information about the assassination operation beforehand.

ipython··on 'Hairdryer used to trick weather sensor' to win Polymarket bet
In a sense, that's already happened. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/kalshi-sued-over-o... and https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/apr/18/iran-war-bets-...

> Later, a single user would make over $550,000 after betting that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would topple, just moments before his assassination by Israeli forces.

ipython··on The insider trading suspicions looming over Trump's presidency
Ha. Well in that case an ios app is small ball. For corruption on DJT scale, just become one of the top bag holders of $TRUMP to meet him and get corruption tips from the man himself. https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trump-dishing-out-mar-a...

The simple act of leaving a private social media website is enough to “alienate” people who would otherwise be supportive? Making membership in a private social media website contribute so heavily to your personal identity seems like more of a reflection on that person than anything else.

(FWIW, I have never had a Twitter or X account)

ipython··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Where do we go from here?

ipython··on AI assistance when contributing to the Linux kernel
Glad to see the common-sense rule that only humans can be held accountable for code generated by AI agents.
ipython··on The difficulty of making sure your website is broken
Interesting. Chrome (146, macOS) shows no error messages on the revoked cert pages, but Firefox does (also macOS).
ipython··on Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era
I totally agree with the premise that we should not anthropomorphize generative ai. And I find it absurd that anthropic spends any time considering the “welfare” of an ai system. (There are no real “consequences” to an ai’s behavior)

However, I find their reasoning here to have a valid second order effect. Humans have a tendency to mirror those around them. This could include artificial intelligence, as recent media reports suggest. Therefore, if an ai system tends to generate content that contain signs of neuroticism, one could infer that those who interact with that ai could, themselves, be influenced by that in their own (real world) behavior as a result.

So I think from that perspective, this is a very fruitful and important area of study.

Snowden, similarly, signed a substantial non-disclosure agreement which was a condition of his employment with Booz-Allen.

Of course, considering the NDA was a condition of his employment, he was paid for his work that he could not have done had he not signed said NDA. What did he expect would happen after he received his money and then opened his mouth?
