ipv6ipv4··on Perfectly good M1 MacBooks are being scrapped because of Activation Lock [video]
This is the video I would post if I were a fence.
ipv6ipv4··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
And yet, customer money seems to be consistently disappearing into scammer's pockets. The SEC doesn't seem to have been wrong so far.
ipv6ipv4··on The professor who made $10B by cutting Google its first startup check
He's also a spiteful, not very nice person.

He had an acrimonious divorce where he essentially refused to minimally support his children as a multi millionaire.[1]

He cofounded Arista, but also sued Arista, and lost[2], through OptumSoft, his pet company, out of what can be summarized as spite[3].

ipv6ipv4··on TikTok Owner Had 'Backdoor' for CCP Access to US Data, Lawsuit Alleges
> How do we get rid of it?

Put down your phone.

ipv6ipv4··on Why Did Thomas Harriot Invent Binary?
They didn't do anything meaningful with it.
ipv6ipv4··on A Guide to Understanding the Hoax of the Century
It’s hard to take seriously an article with nonsense like this in it:

“First Russia tried to suppress the U.S.-backed Euromaidan movement in Ukraine”

A Russian canard that Ukrainians don’t have agency.

The rest of the article is more breathless sensationalism masquerading as investigative journalism. Like this nonsense:

“Trump also threatened the business interests of the most powerful sectors of society. It was the latter offense, rather than his putative racism or flagrant un-presidentialness, that sent the ruling class into a state of apoplexy.”

The ruling class? Is this ye olde Pravda?

ipv6ipv4··on SSD as Long Term Storage Testing
The longest lived data is replicated data.

Making more copies, with some geographic distribution, is more important than the durability of any particular technology. This applies to everything from SSDs, HDDs, CDs, to paper, to DNA.

If you want your data to last, replicate it all the time.

ipv6ipv4··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
The claim is that it needs only 20 seconds of audio to clone a voice. I gave it a short clean recording, and the clone failed with a request for a 2-3 hour recording.

Didn't work for me.

ipv6ipv4··on Reasons the banking crisis isn’t a repeat of 2008
A software engineer usually doesn't have a financial incentive to lie to you.
ipv6ipv4··on Stripe announces new round of funding and plan to provide employee liquidity
So given Stripe’s record so far of never wanting to go public, what’s the incentive to buy into this funding round?
ipv6ipv4··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
This is completely false. Apple doesn't chargeback more than it paid out.
ipv6ipv4··on Regulators Close New York’s Signature Bank
So a bank collapses because of zero risk management, and over exposure to speculative bubbles with market runs, and your conclusion is that good steward regulations are the problem?
ipv6ipv4··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
This is incorrect. The frequency domain inverse of the Gaussian ends up yielding a division by zero. There is no inverse for the Gaussian.
ipv6ipv4··on Qualcomm wants to replace eSIMs with iSIMs, has the first certified SoC
Why isn't this a bit of generic software that can run on anything?
ipv6ipv4··on Chinese disinformation targeting U.S. features fake people on fake news programs
Q.E.D
ipv6ipv4··on Using GPT3, Supabase and Pinecone to automate a personalized marketing campaign
How do you know if the output that was sent to customers (who believe they are getting accurate results from a knowledgable human being, BTW) is correct?
ipv6ipv4··on 'The Problem Index' – Which Countries Have the Worst Demographics
It distorted Russian society in ways that are still felt today. So no, it wasn't still fine.
ipv6ipv4··on Existing smartphones will connect with new satellite constellations in 2023
The U.S. government still has jurisdiction over Starlink.

As for crypto currencies, they seem irrelevant to this topic.

ipv6ipv4··on Existing smartphones will connect with new satellite constellations in 2023
How is the Chinese government going to control the flow of information in China once all phones do this and traffic need not leave the Starlink network to allow communication between endpoints?
ipv6ipv4··on Peter Norvig critically reviews AlphaCode’s code quality
AlphaCode doesn't need to by perfect, or even particularly good. The question is when AlphaCode, or an equivalent, is good enough for a sufficient number of problems. Like C code can always be made faster than Python, Python performance is good enough (often 30x slower than C) for a very wide set of problems while being much easier to use.

In Norvig's example, the code is much slower than ideal (50x slower), it adds unnecessary code, and yet, it generated correct code many times faster than anyone could ever hope to. An easy to use black box that produces correct results can be good enough.

ipv6ipv4··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
How will you know? Or is the idea to ban fully automated bot accounts?

As an aside, it would be interesting to setup a parallel HN site that mirrors HN posts and generates completely bot generated comments.

ipv6ipv4··on Bob Iger back as Disney CEO
I'm always surprised that a smidge of sex, that would probably completely fly over the head of a child anyway, is more concerning than the glorified extreme non-stop violence of these films.
ipv6ipv4··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
No. It’s fine in other places.
ipv6ipv4··on We will not pursue the potential acquisition of FTX
Read the comments here. They are a lot like the LiveStreamFail subreddit - minor celebrity gossip.

In that context, it’s not so surprising that a tweet had the effect it had.

ipv6ipv4··on The Lie That Facebook Sold You
Can you point out the inaccuracies in the translation?
ipv6ipv4··on The Lie That Facebook Sold You
What you are describing is not pro-social. It's anti-social. That's the problem. Clearly, I failed in conveying that message.
ipv6ipv4··on The Lie That Facebook Sold You
"It's easier to share an image, maybe with a short caption, rather than composing a post, and consuming friend's stories are quicker than text posts since you don't need to read."

I don't want to invest the time and effort to really connect with people.

"It's a more efficient/faster way to know what my friends and family are up to and it prompts me to communicate with them more."

So I pretend.

"I may be an outlier but I'm very bad at remembering to text/call/email friends if I don't see them regularly"

In general, I can't be bothered to care about other people.

Meaningful connections with people require time, effort, and care. There are no shortcuts.

ipv6ipv4··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
Why be logged in and subject yourself to recommendations in the first place?
ipv6ipv4··on Finnish as a world language?
Hebrew has the ridiculous feature of changing the sounds of those three letter roots in a such a way that they sound like _completely_ different words to someone who is not already fluent - e.g. kaf and khaf, bet and vet.

The lack of vowels also trips up non-native speakers/readers.

ipv6ipv4··on Why the Windows Registry sucks technically (2010)
My impression from a past life working with the innards of Windows was that Microsoft weaponized terrible software engineering practices into a business advantage. The awful underlying implementations made it very hard for competitors to reverse engineer anything and build compatible products. Sometimes, it even made it exceedingly hard to write drivers for Windows because of unresolvable race conditions in the kernel.

Some of the best examples are CIFS/SMB and DCE/RPC over SMB which were bottomless pits of awful.

One of my favorite anecdotes is the SMB print service described as the work of a clueless college student by one of the Samba developers who reverse engineered it.

Microsoft cleaned up very quickly once DOJ forced SMB 2.0 (or whatever it was called) to be documented.
