iosjunkie··on Bluesky intends their indexing to be used by third parties
Is that a SO problem or search indexing (Google) problem?
iosjunkie··on Understanding the BM25 full text search algorithm
"more informed model"

Can you be specific on what you recommend instead of BM25?

iosjunkie··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Aston Martin charges $1000 to add a six CD changer in the trunk of Vanquish.

Clearly textbook price gouging from the monopolistic auto manufacturer, Aston Martin.

iosjunkie··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
I must have missed this and I’m genuinely curious how this works.

How does it work with, say, a SaaS company? Does every employee and contractor retain a perpetual license to each line of code they wrote? If that company ever looks to sell, what intellectual property does the company actually have?

iosjunkie··on ESP8266 Analog Broadcast Television Interface
2016, actually. I remember watching his video on it back then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSiRkpgwVKY
iosjunkie··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
In that case, an Arduino + touch screen would be a nice little addon for this.
iosjunkie··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
I'm reading that as $700,000 or more total compensation.
iosjunkie··on Ask HN: Is there a list of grey-hair-friendly IT companies?
> Plenty of kids in their 30s.

Did I miss the memo on who is considered a kid these days?

iosjunkie··on From grep to SPLADE: a journey through semantic search
Just an FYI, SPLADE is licensed as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, no commercial use.
iosjunkie··on New Anthropic Paper: Sleeper Agents
Direct link to paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.05566
iosjunkie··on Uganda's surveillance state is built on national ID cards
Surely high speed rail wouldn't reduce air travel to point where there isn't a push for TSA and Read IDs.
iosjunkie··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
I would love to see the providence of their training data.
iosjunkie··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
Well for one, Ilya was poached from Google to work for OpenAI to eventually help build SOTA models.

Fast forward to today and we a discussing the implications of him leaving OpenAI on this very thread.

Evidence to support the notion that you can’t just throw mountains of cash and engineers at a problem to do something truly trailblazing.

iosjunkie··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
I’m probably an asshole for thinking this, but we have gone soft.
iosjunkie··on Meta Llama 3
Spending millions/billions to train these models is for a reason and it's not just for funsies.
iosjunkie··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
This hard for me to understand. Apple hasn’t changed its approach their wall garden in ages. The consumer market decided to reward that model with adoption of Apple products.
iosjunkie··on Stable Diffusion 3
I dream of AMD or Intel creating cards to do just that
iosjunkie··on Starlink at the moment of Cruise Missile/Sea drone attack on Black Sea fleet
Not if you want plausible deniability.
iosjunkie··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
The Pixel 7a costs $444 for similar specs. If iOS, the Apple ecosystem, and other creature comforts aren't worth $355 to you, why complain and just buy the Pixel? Seems like less fuss and muss.
iosjunkie··on “Pay or Okay” on tech news site heise.de illegal, decides German DPA
Serious question: how should these sites monetize? Is there a model that is fair to all parties?
iosjunkie··on Meta Open-Sources Computer Vision Foundation Model DINOv2
This is the OSS model that been around for 30 years. Operating systems, web servers, countless other projects that help build the internet we know today. Now, AI tools from Meta.
iosjunkie··on Ask HN: Disabled and out of work for years, but need some side income
I wonder if a 3rd party intermediary entity could be setup to collect the funds from the customer and pay out just the right amount spread over time.
iosjunkie··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
Came here to mention Kitboga. Watch a few of his videos to get a sense to what lengths the scammers go to defraud the elderly. Utterly heartless.
iosjunkie··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
Suggesting that one should not trust someone based on their looks is based af. Any other sage wisdom to bestow upon the people of Hacker News?
iosjunkie··on Cops can extract data from 10k different car models’ infotainment systems
>Honda said it hadn’t seen any indication hackers had maliciously exploited the vulnerability.

Forgive me if I don't feel reassured, given Honda's response to Rolling-PWN.

iosjunkie··on Ask HN: Is This Typical Procrastination?
What book may I ask?
iosjunkie··on Stable Diffusion 2.0
stop trying to build skynet
iosjunkie··on Tell HN: I can't login to Gmail due to phone cannot be used for verification
which apparently is somehow protocol compatible with Google Authenticator

Nothing mysterious. Authy and Google Authenticator simply implement the same standard, RFC 6238.

iosjunkie··on Ask HN: Any pain points worth building an MVP for?
A few days ago came across the MIT-licensed GoAccess. It generates both terminal and HTML based reports that should address your needs. You run the tool from the command line, so doesn’t solve the website-to-upload-a-file requirement, but that could be a fun little project (if someone hasn’t already done that).

iosjunkie··on Lazy, a Capture Tool for Knowledge
I almost felt held hostage by this webpage.
