inversetelecine··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
> Adobe can't stop you from building a better version of Photoshop tomorrow to make billions.

Make a serious dent in their business and they will damn sure try. Typically with lawfare.

inversetelecine··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
> but they still can't make a dent in market share despite Adobe's contempt for their customer base.

Hello, Autodesk

inversetelecine··on AdFlush
I think you're overestimating the number of people who 1) care and 2) use adblocking extensions or any extension for that matter.

Google knows what will likely happen, and pays people lots of money to know.

Fun forgetting your speakers were cranked and getting a message. " Uh oh!" waking up the whole house.

Same, nice repeating digits. 2288665

Mine was easy to remember, so I did. Mostly repeating digits. 2288665
inversetelecine··on Open-Shell: A collection of utilities bringing back classic features to Windows
Simplix (Russian language) has a decent update pack that's still being refreshed.

inversetelecine··on Open-Shell: A collection of utilities bringing back classic features to Windows
O&O team are standup software developers. I like their bluecon and disk imaging software and pricing is fair.

"Everything" by voidtools is decent for local searching in my brief time using it. Not FOSS though.

inversetelecine··on Open-Shell: A collection of utilities bringing back classic features to Windows
"Everything" is another good option, at least from my basic usage of it.

inversetelecine··on Consumption of 100% Fruit Juice and Body Weight in Children and Adults
Same. Typically plain water, or 90% water, 10% fruit juice at best. Rarely do they get a full strength fruit juice.
inversetelecine··on A 2024 plea for lean software
Showed a young kid (I think the machine was older than him) an old Gateway G6-300 machine from 1999. Pentium 2 300MHz, 128MB SDRAM, 5GB hdd, Win98 FE, with over 3.5 GB free. I'm more a hardware than software person so the main draw for me was the unknown (to me) Chromatic Research Mpact AGP onboard graphics.

Anyway, his comment made me chuckle: "Wow, looks like everything runs pretty quick!" And he was right, everything loaded instantly. Even IE6, Netscape Communicator, Adobe Acrobat 5, etc

inversetelecine··on The Ladybird browser project
Many took tech jobs to help further that cause. Perhaps unknowingly?

As I still use Firefox, I have to agree with this.

The performance improvements are nice, but trying to make a Firefox another Chromium skin irks me. Plus I still miss the official compact mode.

inversetelecine··on Remote access giant AnyDesk resets passwords and revokes certificates after hack
Somewhat cross-platform (I mostly use Windows)... I use Tailscale (or just wireguard) and RDP. RDP works great on Windows and is gaining more support in Linux. VNC works as a fallback, but is slow compared to RDP.

Not free, but I was using Remotix until they got bought out by Acronis who haven't really done much but increase the price and rebrand it (really long name "Acronis Cyber Protect Connect"). It does work on Linux and MacOS but I always found the performance to be lacking and the UI is workable but not great.

inversetelecine··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
No time wasting intros, warnings, etc. Double click the file, and enjoy.
inversetelecine··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
The number of 'normies' who talk about torrenting casually is a decent amount. Most at least know what it is. If not, they "have a guy" they get media from.

And now prime wants another $2.99 to stream without ads. Something I had previously included. Nickle and diming also drives customers away.
inversetelecine··on Intel's Humbling
It's getting better and drivers are improving all the time. I personally liked the Arc for the hardware AV1 encoding. Quicksync (I use qsvencc) is actually pretty decent for a hardware encoder. It won't ever beat software encoding, but the speed is hard to ignore. I don't have any experience using it for streaming, but it seems pretty popular there too. Nvidia has nvenc, and reviews say it's good as well but I've never used it.
inversetelecine··on Tell HN: Bash.org is no more
I want to believe the "d" in inverted being right next to the "b?" is what set the lights off right away.
inversetelecine··on Tell HN: Bash.org is no more
Funny, we used to do the same with random pcs in our lab that people would setup and forget about. We used the Duke Nuken 3D theme song from when the game first loaded.
inversetelecine··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
Starlink isn't cheap from what I can see, but may be an option if cable keeps going the way it's been going.

"Reliable high-speed internet, wherever you live. $120/mo in most locations & hardware cost of $599."

inversetelecine··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
Starlink available? It's not cheap, but should offer at least faster download speeds most of the time and better than 1Mbps upload from what I've read.
inversetelecine··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
Frontier (ex-verizon fios) did this. They buried the fiber in the community but no one got mailings until it was ready to "pre-order". Time from pre-order to live service was roughly 3 months and it was stated on the flyer that it was a pre-order and service activation dates were not guaranteed.

inversetelecine··on RPG Engine for the Nintendo 64
I had tried the Sega CD, model 2 I think that attached on the side instead of under. They always failed and we ended up returning them. I don't think it was the optical parts if I remember right, something about a poor connection between the two hardware devices.

Sega 32X worked at least, sadly it wasn't very popular either.

inversetelecine··on Windows 11 adds native support for RAR, 7-Zip, Tar and other archive formats
RAR is great for long-term archiving without any additional tools. You can add recovery records, and even create recovery files (think parity / PAR files) all in one go.
inversetelecine··on Razor 1911
I miss tKC (The Keyboard Caper) and Phrozen Crew.

FAiRLiGHT was popular during the game CD / SecurROM days iirc.

PARADOX, CLASS, SKIDROW and RELOADED I remember as well.

Reading .nfo files was fun, the artwork was great too.
