internetman55··on How to get rich without getting lucky
I don't know why people can't be normal and just have a reasonable career plan with reasonable savings & investment plan for retirement. Seems like people who write on websites don't give a shit or want to work 80hours a week so they can retire at 38
internetman55··on Why Do Americans Stay When Their Town Has No Future?
No, why would anyone be forced to move anywhere? I'm just not convinced it's morally appropriate to live somewhere with no economic activity and expect others to pay for you to live there
internetman55··on Why Do Americans Stay When Their Town Has No Future?
Not caring about opportunities then feeling wronged when it turns out you should have is not really the rest of the world's fault
internetman55··on Why Do Americans Stay When Their Town Has No Future?
For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
internetman55··on 40% of Americans can't cover a $400 emergency expense
Tbh I think we should take the people who run scam schools and just ban them for the country. Or have stricter regulation and accreditation I guess
internetman55··on Lessons from My Math Degree That Have Nothing to Do with Math
Sounds like you were confused. For example, I know people like stuff like the 3blue1brown movies, but my intro linear algebra textbook from undergrad covers literally all the materials and movations he did if you bothered to read it.
internetman55··on Bach at the Burger King
Again I'm bad at chess but that sounds like mostly a waste of time until you're already very good from what i understand. That stuff might be entertaining to learn but if you're rated like 1500 I doubt you're losing cause your oponents are getting out of the opening with a 1/4 pawn advantage. And it takes a lot of study to get to the point where you worry about that (imo)
internetman55··on Bach at the Burger King
I'm pretty bad at chess but I think you could probably spend less than $100 and have all the technical materials you need to get quite good at chess (one book on middle games, tactic puzzles collection (software or book), endgame book, maybe opening book) and probably only really need to study the tactical one for quite a while. My friend went to paid chess tutoring programs as a kid and said they just solved tactics puzzles and then played each other
internetman55··on Bach at the Burger King
I'm not really sure about the rest of the article but I would be more likely to hang out places with classical music cause I like it. So maybe even I would like Burger King more
internetman55··on Bach at the Burger King
+1 I heard the whole four seasons in middle school and we analyzed them
internetman55··on Too Clever by Half
People hate their superiors unfortunately. This is why I think rich/high IQ parents need to put their kids around other rich/high IQ kids: proles/low IQs will tear your children apart out of jealousy, possibly leading to mental disorders and drug addictions
internetman55··on The Nengo Neural Simulator
Nengo is neat, fun stuff if you are interested in neurons or whatever
internetman55··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
If someone in real life told me that fiction is not worth the time, I'd instantly write him off as at best a moron who has mastered some technical skills.

Edit: he may manage to become not a moron in the future, I just mean that I would proceed under the assumption that he is at this time a moron.

internetman55··on Young Chinese are sick of working long hours
Whether those things are true or not, I'm always wary when employers or managers or things from their perspective use words like "outspoken", "pampered", "self-centered". If you subject your other employees to ridiculous nonsense overtime, poor direction, and expect them to make up for it with extra unpaid hours and killing themselves but I think that I could easily get another job and have a huge nest egg because I live with my parents, I can refuse to "play ball". But I'm not really sure that's me being self-centered versus market forces acting normally. It reminds me of the "nice guy" phenomenon where stereotypically unkempt, rude, socially inept men berate women for not wanting to date them and then accuse them of being rude or stuck-up for not accepting their advances. It's not rude and I don't really view myself as self-centered, I just don't think that you're offering anything that I need from you, and it's really self-centered for you to expect me to randomly go against my own interests for your sake in a business setting.
internetman55··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
Haha, funny :)
internetman55··on Lyme Disease Is on the Rise Again
Oh indeed, I haven't researched the subject, just know many quacks seem obsessed with "gut" and "microbiome" these days and wasn't sure if there was real science behind it. Glad you are doing better, that sounds like a nightmare!
internetman55··on Lyme Disease Is on the Rise Again
Is this actual medicine or blogger stuff? I don't mean to be dismissive but most people I've seen talk about "microbiome" "gut" etc. seem somewhat quacklike
internetman55··on Buffett bashes Bitcoin as nonproductive, thriving on mystique
Well I trust the stock market more cause normal people invested in it and not mostly weird internet libertarians who thought Obama was going to take their savings and drug dealers (I'm sure other people were investing in Bitcoin in 2011 but these are the guys I was aware of)
internetman55··on Buffett bashes Bitcoin as nonproductive, thriving on mystique
I can't agree or disagree on any investment recommendations as I have no expertise in the area, but I have that is pretty much what my gut reaction to Bitcoin/crypto has always been
internetman55··on Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in adults admitted to psychiatric hospital
Is there any informed discussion of the value of reading articles like this versus just not and doing what your doctor says ?
internetman55··on Health dangers of sleep deprivation
Yeah, hopefully people will take this as a wake-up call and start sleeping properly. Being obsessive about your health probably won't do much good, but I think you could ask any aging multimillionaire about whether it's worth more to take reasonable care of yourself or to work a little bit harder. Unless you are on the steets, money just isn't worth that much compared to good health. And you don't really need to kill yourself to make it to an UMC income in most circumstances if your IQ is around the hackernews average (my opinion)
internetman55··on Health dangers of sleep deprivation
No offense to your father, but where would anyone get the idea that this is a good thing to do?
internetman55··on The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant (2005)
It's not obvious to me that dying of age-related diseases at 80 is as bad as dying of malaria and whatever given age in most people's views
internetman55··on The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant (2005)
Does this relate to the dragon energy of Kanye West and Donald Trump?
internetman55··on How much would you pay to keep using Google?

internetman55··on Machine Learning’s ‘Amazing’ Ability to Predict Chaos
Yeah it's kind of sad to me. Quanta is amazing but I'm not sure if I could reasonably expect to exist without Simons or someone like him privately funding it
