integralid··on In math, rigor is vital, but are digitized proofs taking it too far?
>This is literally the same thing as

No.

>You can

Not right now, right? I don't think current AI automated proofs are smart enough to introduce nontrivial abstractions.

Anyway I think you're missing the point of parent's posts. Math is not proofs. Back then some time ago four color theorem "proof" was very controversial, because it was a computer assisted exhaustive check of every possibility, impossible to verify by a human. It didn't bring any insight.

In general, on some level, proofs like not that important for mathematicians. I mean, for example, Riemann hypothesis or P?=NP proofs would be groundbreaking not because anyone has doubts that P=NP, but because we expect the proofs will be enlightening and will use some novel technique

integralid··on Miasma: A tool to trap AI web scrapers in an endless poison pit
search crawlers used to bring people TO your site llm boots are used to keep people OUT of your site, because knowledge is indexed and distributed by corporations.
integralid··on Microsoft Set for Worst Quarter Since 2008
Yes but if there are three banana shops around and there are five banana addicted people living nearby the number of bananas available on average for every person is not 15.

In other words, if all ai companies need more compute that a single provider can provide, then there's just not enough of it. So the question "why everyone partners with everyone" must have a different answer.

integralid··on Microsoft Set for Worst Quarter Since 2008
This is significantly safer than shorting that some people here suggest.

You can't lose money sitting on cash. While when shorting your potential loss is infinite.

integralid··on CERN uses tiny AI models burned into silicon for real-time LHC data filtering
I disagree. More often than not is "We know how to solve the problem, and the solution is some linear algebra"
integralid··on Shell Tricks That Make Life Easier (and Save Your Sanity)
That's vaccously true as you said isn't it? I write fish on my shell and then I can save it as a fish script. Worth noting that bash is much more portable and available by default, but if I'm going for portability I go straight to /bin/sh
integralid··on Shell Tricks That Make Life Easier (and Save Your Sanity)
Except not everyone uses bash shell - so it's not really accurate.
integralid··on End of "Chat Control": EU parliament stops mass surveillance
we can learn from our American friends and call it something like CHILDREN SAFETY ACT. So you want to hurt children, huh? I hope not
integralid··on Apple randomly closes bug reports unless you "verify" the bug remains unfixed
Feeling overwhelmed by insurmountable mountain of bugs and issues is not the way either. We can argue that closing the tickets is not the best way, but if realistically nobody will ever look at them, why not make the developers feel better.
integralid··on TurboQuant: Redefining AI efficiency with extreme compression
I also instinctively reacted to that fragment, but at this point I think this is overreacting to a single expression. It's not just a normal thing to say in English, it's something people have been saying for a long time before LLMs existed.
integralid··on They’re vibe-coding spam now
That theory was always bunk. People just can't comprehend, that the average spammer really is that bad. So that theory was created to make sense of that.

Because of my work I investigated a lot of spam, and I discovered real life identities of senders in many cases (because of horrible or no exostent opsec). Most of them were either underage, lived in third world countries, or both.

integralid··on Tinybox – A powerful computer for deep learning
Thanks for chiming in. I'm looking for a reasonably cheap local LLM machine, and multiple 3090s is exactly what I planned to buy. Do you have any recommendations or recommend any reading material before I decide to spend money on that?

edit: Found your comment about /r/localllama, but if you have anything more to add I'm still very interested.

integralid··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
Either you missed the joke or I missed your sarcasm. I read GP as a joke: being literally kicked out of a flight in air is a death sentence, which is a bit harsh penalty indeed.
integralid··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
This. I work on projects that warrant a self hosted model to ensure nothing is leaked to the cloud. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that even though the only configured model is local, all my prompts are sent to the cloud to... generate a session title. Fortunately caught during testing phase.
integralid··on FSF statement on copyright infringement lawsuit Bartz v. Anthropic
This is also, unfortunately, the only way this can be settled. Making LLM output legally a derivative work would murder the AI golden rush and nobody wants that
integralid··on Nightingale – open-source karaoke app that works with any song on your computer
>app that works with any song on your computer

Impressive, very nice. Now let's see my death metal collection.

Just joking! Very nice, thanks for open-sourcing it.

integralid··on How I write software with LLMs
>No human should ever be forced to look at the code behind my vibe coded internal admin portal

Except security researchers. I work in cybersecurity and we already see vulnerabilities caused by careless AI generated code in the wild. And this will only get worse (or better for my job security).

integralid··on Changes to OpenTTD Distribution on Steam
Are you sure the stream version has proprietary assets? I was under impression that they had some open assets, but I may be wrong.
integralid··on I found 39 Algolia admin keys exposed across open source documentation sites
I liked the graphs. When skimming posts i often stop on graphical elements and decide if I want to understand the context or continue skimming. In this context, all three graphs were useful for me.

Posts with just text are sense and just not nice to read. That's why even text-only blog posts have a tendency to include loosely-related image at the top, to catch reader's eye.

integralid··on Redox OS has adopted a Certificate of Origin policy and a strict no-LLM policy
>no I dont know how O(n) is calculated when reading a function

This is really, honestly not hard. Spend a few minutes reading about this, or even better, ask a LLM to explain it to you and clear your misconceptions if regular blog posts don't do it for you. This is one of the concepts that sounds scarier than it is.

edit: To be clear there are tough academic cases where complexity is harder to compute, with weird functions in O(sqrt(n)) or O(log(log(n)) or worse, but most real world code complexity is really easy to tell at glance.

integralid··on I put my whole life into a single database
I too don't want to be a martyr hermit who don't travel and consume just to cur my CO2 emissions in half, while someone else generates 10x of that living a full life. That's just dumb, and I consider this whole movement rich people telling poor people that they should be considerate and sacrifice themselves.

If you truly care about the planet, don't have children.

integralid··on Is legal the same as legitimate: AI reimplementation and the erosion of copyleft
It goes in one direction only.

Companies can take open-source software and make a proprietary reimplementation. You can't take a proprietary software and make an open source GPL version.

I am absolutely certain that if you tried you would be sued to oblivion. But big company screwing up open source is not even news anymore. In fact I (still) believe that the fact that even though LLMs were trained on tons of GPL and AGPL or even unlicensed software it's considered ok to use LLM code in proprietary projects is example of just that.

integralid··on The changing goalposts of AGI and timelines
Yeah, they will have to raise salary by 10% to attract people. This will no doubt hurt their bottom line. Poor starving SV text workers will have no choice but to accept working for them, lest they starve.

Maybe my sarcasm is not justified, but I don't think most people care that that work for a company that does unethical things. In fact I think all large companies are more or less immoral (or rather amoral) - that's just how the system is built.

integralid··on Ki Editor - an editor that operates on the AST
OP clarified, but I understood that as a valid tree without a path to empty node. I don't have an example, but with grammar weird enough it sounds plausible. Especially if some form of type checking is involved, as OP mentioned.
integralid··on How to Found a Company in Germany: 16 "Easy" Steps and Lots of Pain
Why not step 1? For 90% of software developers sole proprietor is enough (note: I don't live in Germany but in a country with a similar system). GmbH is a pretty heavy solution for larger companies.

German system is more complicated than it should be, but I think this is a bit overblown because of the stereotype.

integralid··on Wikipedia was in read-only mode following mass admin account compromise
I would. AI designed software in general does not include novel ideas. And this is the kind of novel software AI is not great at, because there's not much training data.

Of course it's very possible someone wrote it with AI help. But almost no chance it was designed by AI.

integralid··on The JVG algorithm could break RSA-2048 encryption with fewer than 5k qubits
>AI for the longest time was a scam. Like, it was clearly improving, but only in marginal increments.

AI was improving a lot, we just kept moving the goalposts. AI is not just chatbots. But nitpicking aside, I get what you're saying and I agree.

integralid··on TikTok will not introduce end-to-end encryption, saying it makes users less safe
Even if one more person was prosecuted it was worth it. If you shut down an illegal website a new one will show up a month later, with the same people involved, and you achieved nothing.
integralid··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
As a technical person, who only ever used Android, I have no idea how files really work on my phone. I even used adb a few times but still. From my PoV there are no "files", just photos, videos, screenshots, downloads, application data, applications and system data - all completely different kinds of data.

In my files app i see "downloads" "images", "videos", "apps", "starred", "safe folder". In "images" i see pictures tagged "downloads", "camera", "DCIM", "screenshots" and one odd "2024-12-03_description_here" that I clearly names myself but don't remember doing that.

I have no clue how that maps to a physical phone filesystem, even though I know it's there. I'm sure teenagers don't know that too.
