Funding a seed stage VC with a record of picking winners like Sequoia is probably very easy even without the few sovereign wealth funds from the Middle East. Sequoia’s checks are mainly in the early rounds where the sizes are relatively smaller to series C+. The American university endowments would oversubscribe their rounds multiple times over.
Edit: First address the wrong in question. And a phobia is an irrational fear. What’s the sentence for apostasy or blasphemy in this faith? It’s death. That’s a very valid, rational fear.
Native South African is a debatable word. You could argue that the Khoisan are the natives. But I doubt these are the affected populations that are the subject of this article. There were multiple migrations into South Africa, some from the south by the Europeans and some from the north by the Bantu. All around a 200-year primary window. Even today, the northern migration routes are still active.
You could also just ask a spouse or family member to set your screen time pw and disable safari. Install parental controlled browser like Spin Browser. And also disable image loading in the settings of Spin Browser. This was a small but significant factor in screen time. Just the images on websites! No more limbic over stimulation!
Moving to windows from ChromeOS or MacOS really makes you notice how many basic UX quality of life improvements Windows simply lacks. From inability to paste tables from PPTs into text input fields but ability to do the same from xlx to having multiple desktops show different active app icons and window where you can’t share a window in a different desktop from a MSTeams call running on a different desktop pane. It’s really impressive how much the business world tolerates their crappy UX in the pretense of trying to work with a serious platform. And don’t get me started on the forced updates and the need to run some crazy VPN UX for security. This is not a serious OS.
How much of this is Disney trying to retain the streaming rights for F1 when Apple is now invested and interested? I would buy an Apple Vision Pro if they could get races covered by those new 8k spatial video cameras! And skipping Verstappen for Norris is kinda ridiculous.
Polyester solved minor issues in fabrics and was generally less comfortable and less odor-resistant than cotton. AI, by contrast, is dynamic and steadily removing pain points with no serious competition from non-AI solutions. The title is catchy, but the comparison doesn’t hold up.
This is interesting. I wonder if such a project could dive into lower-level concepts, those akin to prime numbers. The atoms from which all other concepts are built.
Is there an equation for human food chain adaptability speed vs climate influenced food chain change rate. I’m thinking if we could adapt and harness new food chains faster than climate disrupts the old chains, we come on top. We need to assume food generation capacity independent of human intervention remain constant in current and future states. I think it’s fair as long as terrestrial food chain benefit from higher CO2 and expansion of temperate zones further north, while conceding some southern temperate zones to equatorial conditions. This is all speculation. But I feel we are discounting speed of adaptation of current human civilization.
I do see significant change from our current dependence on fossil fuels, but for argument’s sake, what’s the best case scenario for global warming and climate change? Could we create a super verdant earth epoch? What probability do our most advanced climate models have for such an outcome? And what’s the economic cost of moving coastal populations and those in high risk zones to new cities designed from ground up using the latest thinking in urban planning? What’s the cost benefit from high one off relocation costs to long term gains from smarter cities?
I should add that these systems should also have some agency or goal resilience, like goal #1 Don’t die despite your environment and external influences. Easier done through control of free energy to counteract said external forces. And since entropy is a little fuzzy as a concept, we could substitute “reduce entropy” with “maximize free energy” or anything that can create blue photons or super high temperatures.
I believe we should explore a less anthropocentric definition and theory of intelligence. I propose that intelligence can be understood in the context of thermodynamics. Essentially, intelligent entities strive to maximize the available possibilities, minimize entropy, or enhance their potential future outcomes. When an LLM makes a decision, it might be driven by these underlying principles. This competition for control over future possibilities exists between the trained model and the human trainers.
Fails to mention Heisenberg uncertainty, which in my opinion is a theoretical ceiling to this approach. Also it needs to account for cost of compute relative potential useful work from these quantum engines. If the energy cost of compute exceeds potential useful work, then it’s still net negative (or useless work). Finally there’s the question of hidden patterns and the spectrum of randomness. Some systems are more random than others. The potential for useful work within a reasonable energy cost of compute will decline when we travel down the spectrum of randomness. Systems which are at maximal Heisenberg uncertainty, I.e. particles are not entangled, and have no correlation with a superstructure of other entangled particles, will not hold any further improvement to knowledge and thus zero potential work. This is the ultimate entropy of the local and macro system. Probably also the cause of certain violation of conservation of energy principles, such as dark energy.
This article does not provide a statistically significant observation. It seems to read as an envious rant about a few potential bad apples. Just because you are a billionaire doesn’t preclude you from being intelligent and hardworking. Some families don’t get swept up in the wealth and require commitment from their children to make their own money and claim such as the LVMH group family and the Murdochs. Their wealth mostly sitting in startup equity, listed large cap equity and other GDP driving asset classes such as interest bearing instruments. Their children tend to inherit a lot of those genetics and traits. They may not see all the consequences to life themselves but they aren’t necessarily oblivious to them either.
I feel entanglement post measurement is the exchange of which way information with a classical system (all matter beyond a mass threshold when other forces override quantum uncertainty). Which way information integrity is critical and is non local (see delayed choice quantum eraser). But reality is mostly classical, a network of entanglements starting from the Big Bang, crystallized which way information.
The experiment seems flawed if they cannot rely on classical observers and measuring tools. The whole point of reality is that it is classical, not quantum. You need to collapse the quantum wave function through entanglement with a classical super system (physical reality).
What's the probability of similar treks occurring in prehistory among early humans within a period of 50,000-100,000 years. Was the wandering trait an inevitable driver of colonizing all major landmasses? 7 years of effort over such a vast scale of time makes it seem almost inevitable.
Hi, on attachments, you can currently use North with inline images. We are considering other formats at present.
We haven’t added passcode protection as yet but this could be introduced if requested.
North works on a different paradigm when it comes to grouping. Notes coexist in many groups at the same time. This makes your data much more nonlinear. You have many perspectives and paths to access your content.
Hi, We’ll add this to the design pipeline. The site is intentionally left aligned as we felt it worked best for readability and responsiveness. However, as you pointed out, the left aligned, one column design is a little unconventional.
