insensible··on Glyphosate found in granola, crackers and oatmeal
I've been a veggie farmer. I'm familiar with what's allowed in the NOP (national organic program), and given the chance to be exposed to the worst of it I'd choose it over RoundUp every day of the week.
insensible··on Glyphosate found in granola, crackers and oatmeal
I absolutely know that organic food also contains glyphosate and that I'm not eliminating my exposure. My family has chosen to reduce our exposure this way, since to whatever extent the organic certification works, this practice is prohibited.
insensible··on Glyphosate found in granola, crackers and oatmeal
I've reviewed grain-industry literature discussing this issue as a matter-of-fact consideration (in materials that were primarily on other topics). I've read accounts from grain farmers themselves. It's not made up.
insensible··on Glyphosate found in granola, crackers and oatmeal
A lot of people don't know that RoundUp is sprayed on many (perhaps most) grains shortly before harvest. It desiccates the grain crop, keeping the combine from getting gummed up and increasing yields.

When I learned this, I decided enough was enough and switched to strictly organic grains. I think it actually helps my health quite a bit. I wonder how many of the health problems we blame on wheat are actually due to the poison that is routinely sprayed on it.

insensible··on Blocked by Facebook and the Vulnerability of New Media
> I do not know if I am blocked by Facebook as an alleged Russian bot, or for any other reason. I do know that it appears to have happened shortly after I published the transcript of the Israeli general discussing the procedures for shooting children.

Another day, another argument for returning to RSS readers so we can filter for ourselves.

insensible··on Ex-Facebook Executive: “You Don’t Realize It but You Are Being Programmed”
I've heard people describe Facebook as basically just filling out a bunch of forms. I take him to mean that we are reducing the rich contours of human experience and interaction to just filling out forms and tapping buttons on a screen.
insensible··on Obama Signs CISA Bill into Law
That's the big-government position. You can be in favor of a particular issue without subscribing to this view.
insensible··on An Ode to Kai's Power Goo
Perhaps you're in the market for the fractal app he helped create.

insensible··on An Ode to Kai's Power Goo
Just looked him up and learned that Kai lived next door to Douglas Adams and collaborated with him on book covers.

insensible··on Defense Claims Courthouse Was Illegally Bugged
FWIW I tried to register and it wouldn't accept any password I tried to register with. So thanks.
insensible··on Unexpected Honey Study Shows Woes of Nutrition Research
There's a huge problem with honey labeling—often the packaged product labeled as honey is indeed mostly a cheaper sweetener.
insensible··on Origin of the name “Google”
Douglas Adams.
insensible··on Bernie Sanders' 404 page
Most styles render this as Bernie Sanders’s. In some circles this rendering (Bernie Sanders’) is correct.

Reasonable people disagree: http://www.dailywritingtips.com/possessive-of-proper-names-e... but those are the only two correct versions.

insensible··on Yes I Saw Your Text, but Don’t Expect Me to Respond Instantly
This is an issue of boundaries on the receiver's side. Other people's unreasonable expectations are not binding on us. Otherwise we quickly become enslaved to everyone else's whims, which is no way to live and certainly no way to succeed at anything.
insensible··on Ask HN: How are some people exceptionally productive?
I recommend the book _Refuse to Choose_ by Barbara Scher. It is about how to use that Edison-like tendency of yours as an asset rather than having to stuff it all the time.
insensible··on Hitch – A Scalable TLS Proxy by Varnish
Blog post announcement: https://lassekarstensen.wordpress.com/2015/05/15/introducing...
insensible··on It's Time to Break Up the NSA (2014)
Isn't the PCI standard a better, although certainly imperfect, model for addressing this without roping the Beltway into the process?
insensible··on Show HN: Nooot – Share text using the key phrase, access it from anywhere
I think you found a more direct UI for simple wikis. Nice.
insensible··on Meditations
There are a lot of comments here about other books, but to me this article itself has a great book inside it.
insensible··on What Farm-to-Table Got Wrong
Having interacted with them many times, I'd like to add that these folks are some serious soil hackers. Klaas and Mary-Howell Martens are first-rate farmers and their grains are truly exceptional. Friendly, knowledgeable, and sharing. Exciting to see them featured on NYT through HN!
insensible··on Children of parents in technical jobs at higher risk for autism
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt established an extremely pronounced correlation between a pregnant mom's night-time wireless exposure (2.4 GHz = cordless, Wi-Fi, cell phones as well as microwave ovens) and incidence of autism.

Heavy Wi-Fi/smartphone data use has some serious negative effects that have been documented, but aren't popular!

insensible··on Show HN: Generate a git repo to show a banner on your Github profile
Very, very cool. But I've got a small glitch. Mine shifts a day too early: https://github.com/replaid

Perhaps a time zone issue? Created this at 10pm Eastern time.

insensible··on Computers are fast
Running Varnish is fun for these reasons. And of course reading Poul-Henning Kamp's clearly-stated opinions. :-)
insensible··on GitHub Pages with a custom root domain is slow
Look at page speed vs. bounce rate in Google Analytics for any well-trafficked site. People are frequently casually clicking around, and the faster you have content up on the screen the more casual users will engage.

By analogy, to get into a different mindset, think about channel-surfing on the TV. If other channels show a picture in 0.2s, and as you flip around there's a channel that takes 0.8s to show a picture, are you more or less likely to surf past the slow channel?

insensible··on When TDD Doesn't Work
In which he enumerates measurements of what are quite slow test runs by TDD standards.
insensible··on Why it’s so easy to believe our food is toxic
I only get one upvote, but +100.
insensible··on They say “nothing will change”
I have seen at least two instances of Twitter staff taking old, unused short handles after being hired there. But I don't know about the specific policy decision you seem to be referencing (and I don't know whether that decision exists).
insensible··on U.S. Daily Temperature Anomalies 1964-2013
Joe D'Aleo, the first director of meteorology at the Weather Channel who now works with WeatherBELL, is explaining to anyone who will listen that NOAA did exactly that.

http://icecap.us/images/uploads/NOAAroleinclimategate.pdf

Closing line:

"The NOAA, NASA and the Hadley Center press releases should be ignored. The reason which is expanded on with case studies in the full report is that the surface based data sets have become seriously flawed and can no longer be trusted for climate trend or model forecast assessment in decision making by congress or the EPA."

insensible··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
It's wonderful to have a courageous person breaking the ice on difficult topics. Bravo to Mark. And the love shown by his wife is deeply touching.
insensible··on I am burned out while still in learning phase
Sensitivity to noise is common among highly intelligent people. You would almost certainly benefit from the book The Mood Cure by Julia Ross.

https://www.moodcure.com/

But I bet you will benefit more from getting out of the box you're stuck in now. You've allowed yourself to get hemmed in by one or more false assumptions about yourself and the world. Find those and destroy them. You've got unique strengths. Use those, not the ones Everybody Else wants you to have.
