insaider··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell
I do bet myself. I think there will always be enough people who just bet for fun without any system to offset such effects, but it's a good point.
insaider··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell
You would need a gambling license for that which is quite expensive. My site doesn't facilitate gambling, I'm not a bookmaker, I just give tips.

Thanks! Yea there's lots of competition for sure. It was originally just XGBoost and ARIMA, now it's an ensemble of several.
insaider··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell
I make $3-5k a month with my golf betting algorithm: https://www.golfforecast.co.uk

I'm a data scientist/software engineer and I started the project 5 years ago as part of my masters thesis. Never intended for it to be gambling-oriented but that's just the best way to monetise!

Questions/feedback appreciated - cheers

insaider··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
I've been against the whole blockchain space for some time but I only just realised the one big positive to come from it - a new market.

I think that's why it's become so popular, you can actually invest in ideas just as they're being born now. The stock market is a marvel but the barrier to entry for companies is insane. It's also why there's so much money flowing through VC channels these days.

I'm just hoping the resolution to these issues that sticks, a proper market for investing in early stage startups, is created outside of the blockchain.

insaider··on My First Impressions of Web3
I think the best thing that can come out of this whole crypto/web3 space is a new sort of stock market. I've a startup that I want to open up for micro investors and the best way I can think of doing so is through NFTs/crypto that represent shares in the company.

The barrier to entry to the traditional stock markets (turn over requirements etc) is far too high. Does anyone know of something like this?

I make $3-5k a month from my golf betting algorithm website: https://www.golfforecast.co.uk

About half of the income is from algorithm profits and half from subscription fees. Feedback/questions appreciated!

insaider··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension that can automate any website
Neat dude! One tip - I'd add subtitles to your demo vid.
insaider··on Capitalism is killing the planet – it’s time to stop buying into our destruction
This is my argument against cryptocurrency - it's capitalism taken to the extreme and we're already struggling to mitigate the downsides of capitalism.

Don't get me wrong, capitalism is a great thing and has brought us to where we are today but it has downsides. In the 21st century a government's primary purpose is simply to mitigate those downsides. However, governments are increasingly losing this power struggle. Democracy is being manipulated by capitalist-driven propaganda machines. And now, with the rise of cryptocurrencies, we're mitigating governments of their ability to control money too.

If you read that last sentence and thought that that's a good thing then maybe you've fallen prey to those propaganda machines. Government's provide citizens with everything from healthcare, roads and infrastructure, education, welfare and much more. Inflation is high at the moment because government's bailed out their most vulnerable citizens with massive welfare payments. Stripping government's of such abilities is societal suicide.

It's no coincidence that the country that is most money-hungry and capitalistic is also the worst at providing these things (relatively).

For when the measure of a man is the depth of his pockets, then the world shall be ran by clowns.

insaider··on Show HN: Death Calculator
Simple "death calculator" using data from CDC & other sources. Suggestions on how to improve/develop please!
insaider··on Kelly Criterion – how to calculate optimal bet sizes
Exactly I'm a pro gambler and data scientist and the optimal staking strategy is mostly just stake sizes that are inversely proportional to odds, plus a little increase/decrease relative to perceived value (what the kelly criterion does).

Check my golf betting algorithm out if you're interested: https://wwww.golfforecast.co.uk

insaider··on Show HN: A Golf Betting Algorithm
Hey HN,

I made an algorithm for predicting professional golf for my data science thesis and have been working on it since. The link is to the results of the latest version of the algorithm, you can click on the graphs to see what the forecast for an individual event looks like e.g.: https://www.golfforecast.co.uk/ProfitTable?eventId=4901

I'm super proud of the product but I've struggled with marketing and making it easy enough for the layman to use/understand so would love some feedback!

insaider··on Show HN: I discovered a trading algorithm that returns ~24.85% annually
My golf betting algorithm averages just over 20% BUT It's so consistent that by steadily increasing the stakes to take advantage of compound interest it hits ROIs of over 1000%

Check it out: https://www.golfforecast.co.uk/profitgraphs

insaider··on Laser pulse travels 300 times faster than light (2002)
Nice explanation. But if "it is still correct to say that information cannot be transmitted faster than the vacuum speed of light" what are some possible use cases of this affect?
insaider··on Launch HN: InBalance (YC W21) – Short-term energy market forecasting
I worked for/with one of those teams at ESB - Ireland's national electricity provider. We built a cutting edge real-time visualisation of energy production/usage from all the power plants in the country using different fuel types and forecasting models like yours in order to get the most out of renewables and also give the traders an edge.

I was thinking of doing my own system too so love what you guys have done. I'm currently just working on my own side projects so open to opportunities if you guys might have some? :)

insaider··on ‘Charlie Bit My Finger’ Is Leaving YouTube After $760,999 NFT Sale
The world's gone mad!
insaider··on Than Average
Was thinking the whole thing stinks of selection bias but this one is the epitome hahaha
insaider··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
Super interesting read, I'm a data science and did some research on the same topic as part of a side business I was making that targeted tinder incels. Check it out, and my proposed solution (lol) https://smoothopener.com/
insaider··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Yea I don't have a farm to bet just yet. This means two income streams. Plus I love working on the website
insaider··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I made https://www.golfforecast.co.uk - an ML algorithm to predict golf.

After 5 years it's making enough from subscriptions for me to live off (3K gbp/mo). The algorithm is always a work in progress but it's seeing consistent returns now so I'm making money from that too :) plus it makes golf a lot more entertaining.

insaider··on Major breach found in biometrics system used by banks, police and defence firms
Maybe I'm being naive but why don't they store hashes of the biometrics on the server instead? Then just change the hashing algorithm if there's a compromise?
