inquirerofsorts··on Pimp My Microwave
I've pulled open microwaves and removed the buzzer. My flatmate thought I was nuts at the time but as a person often up late reheating things it's a considerate thing to do, there's no need for a device where you can't turn off the sound. Even worse when it continues making noises every 30 seconds afterwards until you open the door. RIP anyone who likes to cook then cool.

Microwaves are already loud appliances, I can hear it running from the next room. Meanwhile you'll be hard-pressed to find a toaster that beeps.

inquirerofsorts··on Google knows where we are, and so do advertisers
Don't know much about US carriers apart from brief interactions but I thought it was clear they were selling that data to 3rd parties for years and then got Government blessing to do it after being called out?

Seems insane to me, it's one of those thing you take for granted elsewhere, yeah of course my mobile ISP knows my location, as does the govt if they ask the ISP in an email, that's fine. (Quite sure most carriers have no qualms just handing it over on request)

But just selling that info for cents to any third party seems so utterly egregious and a massive betrayal of consumer trust.

inquirerofsorts··on Campaign “Reclaim Your Face” Calls for a Ban on Biometric Mass Surveillance
> I think we've lost that war.

Years ago my country was arguing over getting the state biometric databases to update the federal database within hours compared to typical weeks, the usual terror nonsense rolled out. No one was debating the morals at all, it was solely about interop and "who is paying for this?".

Biometrics has dug in deep and isn't ever going away, at least in the free world.

There's a setting hidden away in android allowing apps to scan local wifi/bluetooth networks even when wifi is turned "off". Enabled by default of course.
inquirerofsorts··on Google knows where we are, and so do advertisers
Behind a CGNAT, which most mobiles devices are, makes that point fairly moot. When I look up "my ip" on the phone it's always in a capital city 6 hours away.

Your mileage may vary of course.

inquirerofsorts··on Dan's online motorcycle repair course (1999-2020)
> evangelism

Bizarre take, it's one sentence at the top of his page of motorcycle knowledge. The average HN comment wanks on with more far useless fluff in an attempt to look smart.

Is it really that hard to accept other people holding different views? And does it really warrant a comment about how it makes you feel uncomfortable despite all the work that has been freely provided for your benefit?

I'm a stout atheist and grew up fixing a dozen or so bikes mainly learning from this site and online manuals. I owe Dan an invaluable amount and couldn't care less about his beliefs.

Try being a bit more inclusive in life, you might learn something.

From TFA:

"By working from home, people aren't paying for public transport or eating out at restaurants near their places of work"

It's exactly what the GP comment referenced.

inquirerofsorts··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
Prove me wrong anytime folks, I'm sure you can at least flail around and try, or at least mash the squeal button that you all like so much.

How exactly do you unlock bootloaders from modern phones (past 2 years)? You get jailbreaks from the internet and sideload them right? Do you disassemble the binary code? Does it void your warranty? Which mobile device manufacturers offer official bootloader unlocks today? There's only one I know of.

Did i happen to mention the big bad China company in a good light to warrant such disdain for my as yet undisputed comment? Is that the problem here?

inquirerofsorts··on Ask HN: So where do I put an article, so it's discoverable, if not on Medium?
The problem is writing something good. Not SEO.

Sort out the first one and the other will follow.

inquirerofsorts··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
> Unlock the bootloader

A dangerous game on anything other than Xiaomi phones these days, the only company to provide official bootloader unlock software, but yeah otherwise, go download it from some shady website and not have a care in the world about the most sensitive device you own.

You'd be safer shooting heroin into your eyeballs than installing Android root software from 6 years ago.

How on Earth is this advice allowed here?

inquirerofsorts··on Ubooquity: Free home server for your comics and ebooks library
My exact thought reading the link, there's plenty of ebook reader apps for nextcloud. It may even work out of the box, I'm not sure.

Same goes for most formats you can imagine, overseas family puts up lengthy holiday videos on my server and nearly everyone just watches it in the browser.

inquirerofsorts··on Standing on our own two feet
> It's not my fault that you have a shitty ISP.

Really don't think you're grasping this and lack an understanding of packet routing.

Please type:

  traceroute apache.org
It's not just your ISP that's potentially shitty, it's every single hop on that list. Even worse if the person is using an open wifi connection.

Apache will happily serve you an insecure connection, they are the 80th top site on the internet. This type of stuff should be called out by technologists and it's incredibly disappointing when its handwaved away.

Treaties tend to not have much meaning these days when you can just walk away on a whim without any consequence.

Imagine launching an invasion out of spite but the enemy has 9 months notice that you are coming.

Good luck with that in your fragile vacuum vessels.

inquirerofsorts··on What Bitcoin’s White Paper Got Right, Wrong and What We Still Don’t Know (2018)
There were numerous prior attempts to create digital cash publicly, some of them went to jail for trying. Szabo was asking if anyone wanted to help build bitgold, apparently no one answered the call. The initial Bitcoin release was very far from a finished codebase or "fully formed".

inquirerofsorts··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Has been said by many in Australia that's it's easier to buy a house than get a library card.

The biggest residential purchase was splashed across the front page of the biggest newspaper as some great event yet it took them years to determine it was illegal and that was from a falling out between the owner and government.

If a $30 million luxury house in Sydney with national news coverage can't be exposed as being illegally bought, what fucking hope does any average property have? They basically catch no one for this stuff and if they do it's always due to some other crime instead.

UK/Canada/Australia/NZ are some of the biggest real estate money laundering destinations on Earth and all of their governments know it.

inquirerofsorts··on How to Dual-Boot Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10 with Encryption
No mention of the system time issues which can wreak havoc?

It's best to fix this on linux with timedatectl. Changing it on windows often ends up being a cure worse than the disease.

inquirerofsorts··on Secrets and spies: Behind the doors of the GCHQ
It's exactly the same in the US public service. The TLA's have been complaining about it for years and they are essentially hamstrung with defined public service salaries. It's a shitty situation for natsec operators and institutionally hard to change.

All of which has essentially led to the proliferation of greymarkets for exploits like Zerodium et al.

The situation is likely far worse for the States than the UK as the salary differential is greater and the agencies can only hire citizens. Do note that the US government is now the biggest buyer of malware on the planet, not really that surprising when you look at the circumstances.

The maintainers should probably just run their own git server as a hidden service, change their git name/email/signing keys and be done with it.

Going after youtube-dl so publicly has a solid Streisand effect. Feel as though the lawyers aren't going to give up easily on this one and will hound them one way or another.

Regardless, there is some github alternatives available through tor:

> I want to record videos, watch videos, talk to people, read stuff. And I still have an SSH client on my iPhone for when I need to remote into my server to do stuff on it while on the go.

I do all these things on an OS that is entirely a open source community effort using absolutely nothing proprietary. F-Droid and it's derivatives offer all these things easily. Maybe I'm missing the point here?

Can we see the source code for your iphone ssh client? How sure are you about its security?

inquirerofsorts··on Stable 1.2 Gigabit/s Internet achieved in moving train in Switzerland
That's a fair call, I'm not sure how you'd even try start comparing it to the West, I doubt western countries can even be compared to each other that well.

See people in here talk about land area and population while completely ignoring things like topography/zoning/protectionism. Building 100km of rail in Switzerland is never going to be comparable to building 100km on flat plains elsewhere.

inquirerofsorts··on Stable 1.2 Gigabit/s Internet achieved in moving train in Switzerland
China high speed rail growth over 9 years. It's an excellent system and I much prefer it to domestic aviation.
