inkeddeveloper··on Google is moving EU citizens’ data to US?
I think it is the reverse, although I may have misunderstood your statement. GDPR applies to the entity controlling the data, not the resident. So Google LLC is subject to GDPR. Further, an EU citizen is entitled to use Google LLC and by providing services to an EU citizen, Google LLC has to abide by GDPR. So, my understanding is that Google may move an EU citizen's data to a US company as long as the US entity abides by GDPR.
inkeddeveloper··on What people in tech had to say about JavaScript when it debuted in 1995 (2017)
Agreed. In my class I always start with the hard/wrong way. Point out why it's hard/wrong. Let them hate it. Then show the easy/correct way. You can't just point them at something and say, "Do it this way or else." That's not teaching. That's directing.
inkeddeveloper··on What people in tech had to say about JavaScript when it debuted in 1995 (2017)
Are you okay?
inkeddeveloper··on Google interviewing process for software developer role in 2020
I would hope the answer to "how would you write a distributed database from scratch" isn't "I'd use PostgreSQL."

Actually, I'd probably do the same.

inkeddeveloper··on Offshoring roulette: lessons from outsourcing (2016)
I'm a people person, damnit!
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
AI/ML
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
It forces developers to write better code because they have to maintain it from design to deploy. The biggest pushback I've seen is from people who don't want to think about how inefficient their app runs in the cloud and just want to write the next API.
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
I hope no one calls it lightweight. We've been running a few or our own benchmark tests for various frameworks and we have found that Quarkus running on GraalVm is the definition of lightweight.
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: I'm away from the software industry since 2017; what has happened since?
The blockchain months were rough.
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: How to Do a Startup in 2020?
Back to the basics. Just build something people want.
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: A major USA bank is storing passwords in cleartext – what to do?
I yell often in my teams/skype messages to people because I'll switch from the mainframe to the modern world. Kinda humorous.
inkeddeveloper··on Tell HN: How to run a startup for $6 a year
+1 for sendgrid
inkeddeveloper··on Why we need a book about naming
Underscores are difficult to distinguish from underlining. That's just one issue.

Underscores_make_full_highlighting_easy

Dashes-make-single-highlighting-easy

It's also a use case thing. Double click on each sentence and note the behavior. It depends on which one you want. We use snake case in our urls because you can copy something from the documentation and easily highlight a portion to change.

inkeddeveloper··on Let's Encrypt: an automated certificate authority to encrypt the entire web
Samesies. I'm glad someone else considers home built pipelines a fun hobby as well.
inkeddeveloper··on Space Frigates
It's space. There isn't really steering; you have to use thrust to modify your vector.
inkeddeveloper··on Software is about people, not code
Products are about people. Software is about code. Software accomplishes a task determined by business (or people needs) defined in a product.
inkeddeveloper··on Why Docker? What’s all the hype about?
Containerization is nice because it literally becomes a "write once run anywhere" kind of deal. If it runs on docker, it will run on any* docker.

The true gain is from container orchestration, ie Kubernetes. Scaling becomes nearly trivial. Resiliency is handled like a charm. There are so many pros to containerization with orchestration that libraries full of books have been written about them.

inkeddeveloper··on Windows Search down for many – here's the fix
Regedit to fix windows search? No thanks.
inkeddeveloper··on Mint: A programming language for writing single page applications
Mint, the budget app
inkeddeveloper··on Show HN: Camp Fire – chat with people within a radius
You don't know that for sure.
inkeddeveloper··on Show HN: Camp Fire – chat with people within a radius
Ooo...that name takes me back.
inkeddeveloper··on What's SAP?
Enterprises don't care at the micro level. There's near infinite more that do and that's where they make money.
inkeddeveloper··on The Shadow Inc. app that failed in Iowa last night
IIRC they aren't on the app store. The app was side loaded onto android devices.
inkeddeveloper··on The Shadow Inc. app that failed in Iowa last night
At least you're honest.
inkeddeveloper··on Tesla stock explodes higher again, topping $900 per share
I feel this comment in my bones.
inkeddeveloper··on Move Fast and Break the Iowa Caucus
Not sure how tech and progressive politics interact; handling of data is another issue but that's not the tech side IMO.
inkeddeveloper··on Kubernetes the Easy Way
Global domination?
inkeddeveloper··on Kubernetes the Easy Way
I would not say Kubernetes is extremely easy. Running kubectl commands is easy. Setting up and building a cluster from scratch is not easy. You may have had an easier time, but I wouldn't label the whole process as easy.
inkeddeveloper··on Kubernetes the Easy Way
Kubernetes the easy way is just the long way of saying "Rancher."
inkeddeveloper··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
I feel that's why food trucks became popular. Low barrier to entry (relative) and allows people that know how to cook quickly cook for those that don't.
