inkblotuniverse··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
I have some sympathy for the roman method.
inkblotuniverse··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
If they actually believe you're killing babies, and thinly veiling it by calling them a 'foetus', their actions make more sense.
inkblotuniverse··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
I wasn't talking about optimization! I was talking about non-pessimization, which includes not prematurely abstracting/generalizing your code.

I've seen people making poor decisions at the outset, and having code philosophies that actively make new code 100x slower without any clear gain. Over-generalization, 100 classes and subclasses, everything is an overriden virtual method, dogmatic TDD (luckily, nobody followed that.)

The dogma was to make things more complicated and illegible, 'because SOLID'.

If spacex employed more than 50% of people in America, then...
inkblotuniverse··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
You should, however, not pessimize. People make cargo-cult architecture choices that bloat their codebase, make itnless readable, and make it 100x slower.
inkblotuniverse··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
On the other hand, to non-webdevs, webdevs are like an obese american woman trundling down the road on her mobility scooter, giving the evil eye to people overtaking her on foot as she takes a bite out of a hunk of RAMcheese.
inkblotuniverse··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
The idea is that you've already dismantled the stars and stockpiled all the energy in the universe, to use at your leisure. (i.e. everyone lives around black holes they can throw mass into to reap the bawking radiation). Since you have control over the last non-entropic systems, you can tune how fast the candle burns.

And you're a mind running on a computer! You were already going to experience the heat death! This is just a scheme to get the most subjective time out of it as possible. (Running slower is more efficient.)

inkblotuniverse··on The Last Question by Issac Asimov [pdf]
I reckon the real reason people (specifically men) are angry at folks like Asimov is that they're jealous.

This general misanthropy is boring.
inkblotuniverse··on “Crypto drainer” template facilitates theft
MLK would've had his bank account frozen. If I want to send somebody money, I want to send them money; no matter what you call them.

Crypto seems like a convenient way to do this, and the more repressive governments get, the more of a use-case there'll be!

inkblotuniverse··on What Everyone Knows
They aren't wrong because the science proves them wrong, though- they're wrong because they happen to not be right. Sometimes, the scientific or quasi-scientific institutions we have just aren't sufficiently uncentivised to align themselves with the truth! Modern Researchers are beholden to grantwriters, and grantwriters are biased in what sort of peojects they'll give money to. Specifically, low prestige problems are underfunded.

An example I heard about was light-boxes for SAD. There were some studies with a few lights that helped a bit; nobody had done studies with a ridiculous number of lights to see if it solved the problem completely; one guy did, and it fixed his wife's SAD. In absence of data, anecdata rules.

Alternatively, entire fields can be compromised when they're politicised. The soviet union's physics was good- the scientific method worked there, and if you wanted your ideas about physics to match up with reality, you could do a lot worse than copying the most popular soviet physics world-model! Just don't do it for biology, or genetics, or sociology. (Actually, you probably shouldn't trust western sociology, either.)

One person shouldn't be able to outperform the scientific institutions of the world, but it can happen when they're unhealthy.

inkblotuniverse··on What Everyone Knows
Your rhetoric, and the practices you're advocating for, rightfully hurt the public's trust in scientific and public health institutions. As a layperson, I don't trust someone who lies to me, no matter that they say it's "for your own good!!". Their interests aren't aligned with mine.

"It's an emergency, so surrender your rights and give us more power over you!" Huh. Looks like Covid was a great opportunity for hedge funds and the expansion of government control. Never let a good crisis go to waste.

inkblotuniverse··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
Governments are extremely inefficient, and taxes are mostly wasted; higher taxes disincentivise people from making things. You might say taxes are necessary, but they're an evil. Obama blew up a bunch of middle-eastern kids. A lot of reds genuinely believe abortion is murdering babies. That's why they're against it; it's not really about the women, they just happen to be involved. They'd feel the same way if you had a baby growing in a tank. Meanwhile, the modern democratic party seems to encourage the already extant kids to cut off their genitalia. Dems defend 'traitors to the country', too (Snowden).
inkblotuniverse··on Risk of myocarditis after the Covid-19 mRNA vaccination in the USA cohort study
In many regions, local society as a whole disagreed with the mandates of the distant government. That was my experience- people trying to go about their lives and being hassled by the police for having friends over.
inkblotuniverse··on Risk of myocarditis after the Covid-19 mRNA vaccination in the USA cohort study
What a pity the vaccine didn't stop infections/eradicate the virus.
inkblotuniverse··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
Soft foods cause crooked teeth. Ancestral humans ate raw tubers and other very chewy things that exercised their jaws, and the growing human body needs this resistance/exercise. If you look at modern hunter-gatherer tribes with traditional diets, they have a far lower rate of crooked teeth we'd solve with braces than the developed world.

Sterile environments/too-low pathogenic load causes allergies. The immune system expects a base-rate of infection; if it doesn't see that, it upregulates. Allergies are a first-world disease; they're far less prevalent in less developed countries, and you even see the effect in immigrants- their allergy rates go up after a few years of living in a developed country.

inkblotuniverse··on What has changed with video games over the last 25 years, and what has not
Hm. Lol and dota are the same, overwatch is TF2 meets lol+dota, and tf2 is CS with classes. There's a spectrum connecting everything you've mentioned, but dota and cs are definitely different enough.

Well, he's mistaken in his assumption others will act the same way as him. That's a kind of 'wrong', too- towards himself.

How would you know whether one thing id better than the other without testing them- having them compete against each other? Most e.g. products you could make are a waste, and figuring out what should be made and how much of it is a very non-trivial problem.
