inkblotuniverse··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
Ahh yes, just yoke and impoverish tomorrow's youth. Those kids'll be wishing for another covid- clear out some of the leeches.
inkblotuniverse··on What will you do with the stories entrusted to you?
I could easily imagine people accusing each other of it in a hyper-communalist society, as well!
inkblotuniverse··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
Run a decentralized system akin to a modernized mailing list with a nice UI, where every person accessing the list gets to pick how their view of the list is filtered, choosing from competing filters or creating their own. Filters could be machine-based, competing human-moderator based, whatever.

The doomers and the stans can be talking right alongside each other and never see each other; effectively, the doomer 'site' only exists virtually, as a mutually visible consensus among a subset of the network.

inkblotuniverse··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
If twitter is a publisher, I should be able to sue them for what they publish, but I can't because of CDA 230. Are you in favor of repealing that law?
inkblotuniverse··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
Every starbucks is a different place. If there was a single building 50 million people freely walked into every day, I'd say that should be considered a public place.

The water company owns their pipes, and they're not allowed to shut off my supply because of something offensive I said.

"Anyone may use our platform so long as they do not post messages speaking positively about homosexuality".
inkblotuniverse··on What does it take to be a good programmer?
All problem-solving methods should converge, given enough brainpower, so yes.
inkblotuniverse··on The Big [Censored] Theory
There's an argument that huge social media sites that have wide-scale usage are like utilities. The water company isn't allowed to shut off your taps because you said something they don't like.
inkblotuniverse··on New Zealand's plan to prepare for inevitable climate change impacts
Most people aren't informed by empiricism- they just listen to what the witch doctor in the white robes says.
inkblotuniverse··on Should notes be end-to-end encrypted?
What?
inkblotuniverse··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
It exists in the world, and people in a region might agree they don't want too much there.
inkblotuniverse··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
Whatever society decides is not necessarily good; it's your moral right to break laws you thjnk are sufficiently unjust. When germany goes fascist again, you can bet I'll be using encryption.

If you want people to respect the rule of law, you have to offer them a compromise.

inkblotuniverse··on What is the cost of a cashless society?
It was pretty authoritarian over the course of the last two years!
inkblotuniverse··on In Supreme Court brief, Yale and peers defend use of race in admissions
They're both racist! What you're doing is breaking the leg of some other guy who looks like the original leg-breaker to "make everything even". There were two problems, originally: someone was going around breaking legs, and someone had a broken leg. Now you're cheering on the next leg-breaker, and there's more broken legs in the world.

Your justification for being racist doesn't prevent your actions from being racist.

inkblotuniverse··on In Supreme Court brief, Yale and peers defend use of race in admissions
The word 'racist' is overloaded and refers to multiple different things. 'One race is superior to another' is a racist belief. Discriminating based on race is a racist action.

So asian students are being punished because other asian students did too well? Back in the early-to-mid 20th century, universities had limits to how many jewish students could join each year, with the argument that if they didn't, jews would make up the entire university population. Are you in favor of bringing back that policy, as well?
inkblotuniverse··on A genetic modification boosts grain yields, shortens the growth duration of rice
I'd feel like a hungry guinea pig! I'm very glad to have the privilege of avoiding novel foods.

Is it not true? I suppose not; they are a laboratory, but not a very good one.

inkblotuniverse··on A Spectre Is Haunting Unicode (2018)
Sure they are- some diversity's obviously good so the whole population doesn't get wiped out by one disease. There's a tradeoff between diversity and it's resistance to that sort of disaster, and unity/homogeneity and its resistances to other problems. You'd be a poor eugsnicist to not take that into account!
inkblotuniverse··on A genetic modification boosts grain yields, shortens the growth duration of rice
No, you misidentify me; I'm not one of those anti-human "the world is overpopulated!! Degrowth!!" People. Better food is good; I just assume someone will fuck up at some point while we're figuring out nutrition and genetic engineering.

Let the hundreds of millions eat what they will; any problems or mistakes with gene-edits that lead to poisoning, carcinogens or insidious malnutrition will be sorted out after a few decades, I'm sure. I just don't want to be the guinea pig, if I can let a hundred million other people do so instead!

Those hordes of hungry mouths are a great laboratory: diverse, far enough away and poor enough they can't take revenge on you if you accidentally poison them, etc.

"Let other people put this stuff in their bodies, and see what happens to them".

I'd love to see that.

"Always will be"? That seems excessively pessimistic. Why do you think that?
inkblotuniverse··on Nuclear turn green as EU parliament approves new taxonomy
It's cleaner. Wind turbines break down, and chemical waste never decays.
inkblotuniverse··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
On extremely shaky ground. Had Roe v Wade not been decided as it was, there would now be legislation.
inkblotuniverse··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Then you should be in favor of abrogating decisions to the states and reducing federal power.
inkblotuniverse··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
I personally think it's a bit strange that rape and incest are always put into the same category as harmful to the mother- especially incest.

Assuming the child isn't a danger to the mother, it just seems like punishing the child for who their father was.
