infocollector··on Show HN: Repo2vec – an open-source library for chatting with any codebase
Please update TL;DR: repo2vec is a simple-to-use, modular library enabling you to chat with any public or private codebase "by sending data to OpenAI."
infocollector··on Xapian: Open source search engine library
This project has been around and maintained for more than a decade! Small footprint, good speed. One downside might be GPL v2 for commercial use.
infocollector··on AMD Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X Offer Excellent Linux Performance
Nice benchmarks. One caveat is - why not publish which motherboard/RAM combination you were using for the review? Looks like they were using an existing AM5 MB - but I don't see it in the review.
infocollector··on Median filtering (2022)
Does anyone know of a pytorch differentiable filter that does the same thing?
infocollector··on Show HN: deptry 0.14.0 – detect unused Python dependencies up to 10 times faster
Thank you for catching this! Indeed its not a bug.
infocollector··on Show HN: deptry 0.14.0 – detect unused Python dependencies up to 10 times faster
Speed is impressive. Accuracy could use some work. Input for authors:

1. DEP003 'click' imported but it is a transitive dependency (In my code base click is used @click - which it doesn't look like it sees)

2. DEP003 'numcodecs' imported but it is a transitive dependency Usage was open(...,compressor=numcodecs.xxx,...)

Perhaps these warnings/errors should be removed?

infocollector··on Launch HN: Dart (YC W22) – Project management with automatic report generation
Anyone who has used this and notion - any pro/con for using this vs. notion for PM? (Notion these days also has an AI component)
infocollector··on Xreal's new AR glasses are aimed at the Apple Vision Pro
6) I think the threshold for visual display in AR will be 4k in each eye, and 120Hz + USB-C (with mac air m4?) - is where the game will begin.

I think we are getting there...

infocollector··on Ugrep – a more powerful, fast, user-friendly, compatible grep
I think you should try it before you read these conflicting benchmarks from the authors: https://github.com/Genivia/ugrep-benchmarks
infocollector··on Writing and linting Python at scale
They are talking about this project : https://pypi.org/project/fixit/2.0.0a1/#description

https://libcst.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ powers Fixit 2. I would love to hear if there are any production users here for this new linter, and how is that working out for them?

infocollector··on Programming on Parallel Machines; GPU, Multicore, Clusters and More
For anyone who knows both R and Python well - Request: I think it would be nice to translate this book into Python from R.
infocollector··on Ship Shape
It would be nice if this was open source :) Recently, there have been various models that have become small in size (This one is 250kb. There are other simple tasks that have seen models of size 50kb or so for finetuning large models). I am looking forward to when we can actually get back to small models for useful applications :)
infocollector··on Show HN: DataSheetGrid, an Airtable-like React component
I've been using this component for sometime:

https://www.ag-grid.com/example/

Perhaps someone who has experience with these components can list some other ones they like that act like the one posted?

infocollector··on RainforestQA (YC S12) has removed its free plan
They used to have a free plan. Now there is a base fees of $200/month to use the system. Suggestions for any good alternatives?
infocollector··on Networking explained with a horse and carriage
Is there a good comic explanation for TCP/UDP like the "How https works comic" - perhaps someone knows?
infocollector··on Gitlab Critical Security Release: 16.3.4 and 16.2.7
Not sure if anyone here is hanging out from Gitlab. One request, and one question:

Request: The new UI has "Admin" link hidden which is hard to find. I liked the old UI better (explicit is better than implicit).

Question: Is the open source code the same as the Enterprise versions of the code? (how do you implement feature differences?)

infocollector··on Cloud outage causes Bambu 3D printers to start printing on their own
I think we need a regulation

1. Any personal images/data sent to cloud need a FDA approval. (FDA = Federal Data Administration) 2. Any person working in this agency is banned for life to work in the private data sector for life (it better be lucrative to work there). 3. ... perhaps fill any loopholes you see here as you move along ... (along with percentage of revenue punishments for each loophole used first time)

infocollector··on He made linear algebra fun
He is a legend in linear algebra, and probably will be for a long time. His video lectures have proven invaluable, benefiting millions.
infocollector··on CS 61B Data Structures, Spring 2023 UC Berkeley
I think students will benefit from an updated course for 2023 for sure.

> Has this progress been applied to algorithms? If not, why not?

These are fairly recent and will take time to permeate.

infocollector··on Supabase Auth: SSO, Mobile, and Server-Side Support
This project is very impressive! I do hope Supabase decides to support https://github.com/supabase-community/supabase-py , and not just leave it to the community. I would definitely consider becoming a paid customer, assuming Python was supported well/natively. If I am incorrect about Python support, please do let me know.
infocollector··on The U-2 and balloons – Some history, and some thoughts
Does anyone know the comparison between these things in the US:

1. How much does it cost to take off an airplane that shoots a balloon?

2. How much does it cost to shoot a balloon with the aircraft that can shoot it?

3. How much does it cost to build a balloon that has Software Defined Radio+camera and a transmitter/a battery+solar panel for energy+a SoC? (My guess is that this is < $1000)

Why not just send a (< $1000) low cost drone to kill these?

infocollector··on Creative coding, making loops with Processing
Is there a Python library to generate such animations?
infocollector··on Students in Iran are risking everything to rise up against the government
Just one more datapoint: I did talk to an Iranian friend who said things are dire and the uprising is real.
infocollector··on Native Linux GPU Driver for Apple M1
I am waiting to try this on the 16GB RAM M1. M2's have 24G or more available. I think this will be my goto machine for Linux.
infocollector··on Explaining modern server monitoring stacks for self-hosting
Is anyone using netdata in production? Has anyone looked at their data sharing/selling policies? How does it compare with other tools (https://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma) ? Looks very impressive.
infocollector··on PGPP – Pretty Good Phone Privacy
This looks pretty interesting. The Beta launched today (for Android - claims it does no tracking of your cell phone data/location), and I am already tempted. If anyone is trying this out, please let us know the pros/cons of this product?
infocollector··on CS109a: Introduction to Data Science – Resources
Is there a similar class online with PyTorch?
infocollector··on Why I’m Leaving the University
From what I understand, a tenured faculty in TX can be fired for "a good reason" (which is very broad and undefined in TX), which is contradictory to what we understand when we utter the word a tenured faculty (In Europe or US in general). Here are the details: https://www.utsystem.edu/board-of-regents/rules/31008-termin... - I did not know about Wisconsin. Thanks for that information!
infocollector··on Why I’m Leaving the University
It will be interesting to see how Texas and Georgia removing tenure from their public universities will impact what they can retain and recruit, once the news really gets out.
infocollector··on Improving distributed caching performance and efficiency at Pinterest
Thanks for memcached! I am surprised how pylibmc even works at this point - its last released version was in 2019. I do hope Pinterest sponsors.
