I am doing a thing at https://gallotails.com

"inerte" is also my gmail username

I downvote anyone replying "correlation is not causation" to almost any scientific news. If you think the half a dozen PhDs with decades of experience involved in the study don't know that, you just wanna sound smart for internet points.

inerte··on The impact of AI on the technical interview process
Meanwhile there's a handful of companies (the one I work at included) using AI to automate code reviews.

Sure, these tools are not as good as a real human. Yet. Just like 3 years ago companies were starting to ban candidates to use GitHub Copilot, pretty soon candidates WILL find a way to either have ChatGPT open on the side, or listening to the operating system audio and providing real time suggestions during the interview (yeah I know this can be done today).

We either go back doing things on site, or we go crazy and let candidates use whatever they want during an interview. Want to use Cursor and Perplexity + R1? Sure, why not. This is what people are using at work anyway. This probably means interview conclusions are going to be even more nuanced, it can't simply be they solved the problem or not (and the interviewer liked the person), but during the actual conversation things moved organically to whatever direction the topic led to - which is what actually happens at work when pairing.

As you can see I have no idea how to "solve" this problem moving on, but one thing is for sure, the bigger the gap between tooling involved in actual work vs the interview, the bigger this problem is. It's one thing to ask people to write code on a whiteboard for 30 minutes (because they "write" code in a text editor), and another thing to ask people to write code in a whiteboard and the actual work is people chatting with AI Agents to produce so much software in 30 minutes that the entire thing would look like side projects 5 years ago.

inerte··on OpenAI O3-Mini
Sorry! Yes, speech to text.
inerte··on OpenAI O3-Mini
What works nice also is the text to speech. I find it easier and faster to give more context by talking rather than typing, and the extra content helps the AI to do its job.

And even though the speech recognition fails a lot on some of the technical terms or weirdly named packages, software, etc, it still does a good job overall (if I don’t feel like correcting the wrong stuff).

It’s great and has become somewhat of a party trick at work. Some people don’t even use AI to code that often, and when I show them “hey have you tried this?” And just tell the computer what I want? Most folks are blown away.

inerte··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
Once I read May 4th and 2 emails, I knew it was Shopify. I was also affected.

My view of why it happened is a bit different than the author, but my conclusion is wildly different. I've been on tech for almost 20 years, 11 of them in the US.

On average, I do see people that work hard and on important things getting recognized and promoted. I don't have this bleak view that nobody should do anything, it's all random, nothing matters.

I do agree at the end of the day we're just numbers on a spreadsheet for large companies. Most of the time it's not personal, and Shopify probably decided having engineers in Germany wasn't worth, no matter how good they were (and I personally knew a handful that were really, really good, live there, and lost their job).

Those things aren't contradictory. You can work hard and be promoted and get more recognition, and you still can be cut due to decisions completely out of your control. The opposite is also true. Average people get lucky to be on the right project at the right time, sometimes multiple projects in a row. Peter principle and all.

But on average, companies to reward the people that bring value to the company (and its owners)

inerte··on Show HN: I made a app that uses NFC as a physical switch to block distractions
Device could be a tablet without cellular.

Anyway, my son has a phone (hand down from me 5 years ago) without cellular.

inerte··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
Carriers and SMS service providers (like Twillio) obey that, no matter what service is behind.

There are stories of people replying STOP to spam, then never getting a legit SMS because the number was re-used by another service. That's because it's being blocked between the spammer and the phone.

Every time there's a voice recognition post here someone comments about acquiring data. Why is this method better than having access to all of the video and podcasts sites on the internet?

inerte··on I sensed anxiety and frustration at NeurIPS 24
Also, and not quite. I believe the author is mostly talking about how undergraduate and masters degree can already do what PhD students set out to do a few years ago, so they might complete their PhD but it will be them vs someone cheaper and younger with the same hot skills and knowledge. The extra PhD ooomph isn't providing more value.
inerte··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2025?
I've heard many reports of GLP-1 reducing addiction behavior, but more like alcohol and gambling. Never heard anyone reporting on social media reduction. IMHO it looks like it should, I just haven't seen any data / anecdotes.

Aaaah thanks for the explanation. PANEL of 10 humans, as in, they were all together. I parsed the phrase as "10 random people" > "average human" which made little sense.

Not a lot of companies when announcing its most expensive product have the bravery to give 10 of them to help cure cancer. Well played OpenAI. Fully expect Apple now to give Peter Attia an iPhone 17 Pro so humanity can live forever.
inerte··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
The mostly state owned largest bank (Banco do Brasil) did a "Black Friday" last week.

A bank. State owned. Doing Black Friday. In Brazil.

Plus all the raffles / lottery stuff that's just normal business. I agree with 100% preying is on another level.

inerte··on Show HN: I am Building a Producthunt alternative
Forbes, a name that probably makes people think about business articles, has been publishing all sorts of non-business pieces and they did extremely well on SEO because the domain has a lot of authority and inbound links.

So well that basically people were speculating the SEO part would take over the more traditional business.

Google caught up recently (as in a few weeks ago) and has heavily punished their ranks.

Ironically if you search Google for “Forbes SEO” you’ll find many articles about what happened. I think it all started with something titled “The parasitic company trying to take over Forbes”

inerte··on Show HN: I am Building a Producthunt alternative
Unrelated, but I am thinking about how do I get alpha users for an app I am building, and decided to check Product Hunt if they offer any sort of feature to help with that, and I ended up on this page https://www.producthunt.com/questions

Looks like someone is trying to pull a Forbes...

And I guess related to you, please don't do that :)

inerte··on Please stop the coding challenges
I know half a dozen of Senior Staff at FAANGs and they make I would say around 600k - 700k, more of course if stocks appreciate but that's hard to control.

Consistent total compensation offers of $1mil+ is probably reserved for roles above these, sometimes called Principal or Distinguished. I would say the rate of having one of these in an org are like 1 for ~150 engineers.

inerte··on Waymo One is now open to all in Los Angeles
It depends on what you mean by competitor. afaik Mercedez sells a self-driven level 3 autonomous car where they even insure the driver/car, but it's pretty expensive. Tesla has the numbers, but not a single car that can do as much as the Mercedez. Tesla promises they can just push an update an everybody gets a self-driving car, but they've been saying that for... 7 years maybe?
inerte··on Google employees pressure execs at all-hands meeting for clarity on cost cuts
I've mentioned this before, but in the “Measure What Matters” book the author talks about investing in Google in early 1999, and the founders were indeed projecting billions of dollars in revenue, using ads. It was in their pitch deck.

Now, to which extent they REALLY wanted to do this, and REALLY impacted the day to day decision, I don't know. Neither if said pitch deck had other options.

inerte··on Google employees pressure execs at all-hands meeting for clarity on cost cuts
It's not unheard of. I personally know of people at Splunk, HP, and Groupon who knew they would be laid off / fired months before it actually happened.
inerte··on Shopify Is Winning Salesforce Clients, Stoking E-Commerce Rivalry
You're right, but the article is mostly focusing on already big companies switching from Salesforce to Shopify.

foonote: I used to work for Shopify 1.5 years ago

inerte··on Dear CTO: it's not 2015 anymore
The spirit of what you're saying is correct, and you just need to find better examples.

More than half of anyone working on a tech company is not an engineer. So don't say "engineers get better treatment than other workers", just any employee in tech.

And afaik the data on companies that have unlimited PTO is that their employees actually take LESS time off. So it looks good on paper, but in effect does the opposite.

Still, you're right, tech workers have it easy compared to most other jobs, including a lot of other office workers (mostly due to better pay and benefits)

inerte··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
True, and we can go back to any type of media who always have a bias, but overall it just feels different. On one hand, humans writing and humans communicating, even if they have an agenda, is one thing. On the other hand, machines writing and machines communicating is a different level.

Maybe I am overall in a bad mood regarding all this, but this recent article https://time.com/7026050/chatgpt-quit-teaching-ai-essay/ also struck a chord. Do I really wanna spend my time reading/watching machines talking to each other? How long until browsing Reddit or HN will be worthless?

Do I wanna get old with lower cognitive abilities and become this? https://slate.com/advice/2024/10/grandparents-misinformation...

inerte··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
Ever since Sora I've been thinking about the overall death of the internet "content". It all came back stronger with Meta Movie Gen.

I know there are no girls on the internet, but this AI crap is on another level. Even if find a trustworthy creator, I might be seeing a fake video of them. Say I like MKBHD reviews, I will need to pay attention if I am really watching his video on his official channel.

My guard will have to be up so much, all the time, I actually don't think it will even be healthy to "consume content" anymore. Why live a life where almost everything I see can be a lie? Makes me not want to use any of this anymore.
