I am doing a thing at https://gallotails.com

"inerte" is also my gmail username

I downvote anyone replying "correlation is not causation" to almost any scientific news. If you think the half a dozen PhDs with decades of experience involved in the study don't know that, you just wanna sound smart for internet points.

inerte··on Your Codebase Is Probably Fighting Claude (Part 1)
Jeremy, I tried to comment in the article as to not pollute HN with the usual font complain, but the comment was rejected saying I had to be logged in.

Your text is really hard to read! The "f" looks like a "j"... my brain was all the time "a j is coming" and it made no sense in the word... that's because it's a "f". I had to parse "efficiency" 3 times in the first paragraph because it just reads like "ejjiciency"!

inerte··on Gov. Abbott's office redacts pages of emails about Elon Musk
I don't have much to add here, I think we've reached the point where nuance is necessary, and "it depends" comes into play. This Abbot / Elon _seems like_ an abuse of confidentiality for competitive reasons, which itself can bring a bunch of other problems (like insider trading). But overall of course there are reasons for secrecy, and probably mechanisms to minimize that, like does the government REALLY needs to know details that would compromise competitiveness to make decisions? But we would go back to "it depends".

Anyway that's a lot for simplistic HN threads, and I enjoyed your replies.

inerte··on Gov. Abbott's office redacts pages of emails about Elon Musk
> the public doesn't need to be know the budget and shortlist of possible locations for the next Gigafactory

Putting aside your other sensible comments, this one is true from Tesla's side, but false from the government side. I don't "need" to know what Tesla is doing, but I "need" to know what the government is doing. Let's say Tesla is weighing its options where to open the next factory, I want to know what governments are doing to attract (or not) their business.

inerte··on Gov. Abbott's office redacts pages of emails about Elon Musk
Yes, unfortunately... the right outcome here should be corporate lawyers saying "companies should NOT add trade secrets when talking to the government because it will leak", but instead the public can't know what the government is doing because it might hurt a company. US 101, doing what's best for business over its people.

inerte··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
I feel you, and that's a different issue than the one in this thread, which is in general if maintainers ignore bug reports, their projects will be forked and the issue fixed anyway but not in the main project.
inerte··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
If you're going to fix the bug, why not in the main project?
inerte··on Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
I don't understand why you think I am making this argument you're referring to, when I SPECIFICALLY said "I don't understand the Chinese motivation" AND I presented the US side, which I am familiar with.

My whole post was an ask for more information on the Chinese side (each of my 3 phrases were asking this!), which you have provided thank you very much, but I could do without the "you're dumb" when I ask a question.

inerte··on Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
I am not familiar with Chinese politics or motivation, but I wonder if it's for the same arguments we have in the US, "save the world" vs. "the strong can do whatever they want". I am not sure China does for the sake of sustainability and environment. Yes I know the end result might be the same but are the reasons the same?
inerte··on Why we migrated from Python to Node.js

inerte··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
> The games are hosted by very sophisticated companies, that have better mathematicians, and make money.

Oh, it's worse than that. In sports betting at least, if the gambler consistently makes money, the companies will ban or limit their gains. It's a scam.

inerte··on It's not a hack to satisfy known requirements
I have an engineer on my team that's always asking "what if this or that happens in the future?" to which I've started to reply "what if it does NOT?"

I know, I know... wow. Not much insightful. But for some reason with this particular engineer this is the starting point to talk about actual requirements. This question in particular triggers the conversation of going back to product to figure out what they truly know they want right now, not in a maybe future. What are the actual hard, known requirements, instead of wishful thinking and "if everything goes well we will need this" type of mentality of ~hopeful~ optimistic PMs.

inerte··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
Maybe have the app server contact a service that knows the user's location? You can probably somehow get the user's location on Google Maps, or Find My. Or... I don't know, Yelp check-ins with a particular hashtag?...
inerte··on Litestream v0.5.0
I used to work on a product where the app server and database were in the same rack - so similar low latency. But the product was successful, so our N+1 would generate thousands of queries and 1ms would become >500ms or more easily. Every other month we would look at New Relic and find some slow spot.

It was a Rails app, therefore easy to get into the N+1 but also somewhat easy to fix.

inerte··on Solar leads EU electricity generation as renewables hit 54%
TBH your first phrase is how every bad comment starts so I can understand reflex downvotes, BUT, your actual content after that is fantastic, and it took me a while to mentally go to "oh wait they make sense here"

It all depends on quantity and "quality" of the continuity errors. There's even a job for it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Script_supervisor
inerte··on Marissa Mayer will close her old AI startup, sell assets to her new AI startup
Yahoo made a $1b investment on Alibaba early on, and Alibaba was growing a lot, investors couldn't directly buy Alibaba, so they bought Yahoo hoping to eventually cash in.

Yahoo was valued at $44b at one time, and the $1b it put in Alibaba was valued at $40b. So 90% of Yahoo was the Alibaba investment. There was a whole spin off core business to separate it from the investment part drama, years and years of distraction and investors and board people who wanted their ~40x instead.

inerte··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2025)
Emilia, a personal relationship manager. Every once in a while I meet extended family (wives of cousins or their children) or I meet a fellow soccer parent and I forget their names, or who's related to who.

I've used Monica HQ to keep track of this but thought I could tackle differently using AI. With AI you could ask questions like "who's everybody on my aunt's side? Like cousins and their family" and get a good answer.

Afaik other "relationship managers" out there are professionally oriented, for sales people. A lot of them talk about LinkedIn integration, for example.

Take a look at http://emilia-workers-website.inerte.workers.dev/ and if you're interested in Alpha testing, send me an email at inerte@gmail.com - I setup a Discord last week so early adopters can chat with me about.

inerte··on Marissa Mayer will close her old AI startup, sell assets to her new AI startup
I was there too. The Alibaba investment is what doomed Yahoo. Investors wanted their money and didn't care at all about Yahoo's core business.

inerte··on A New Internet Business Model?
I really don't think what's stopping micropayments is the technical ability (or even business deals) to do so. Stuff like that have been talked about and tried for more than a decade, it never caught on.

Anyway, I don't know? I would go somewhere else. Maybe I would just walk outside? It's not like what I get from HN is essential to anything I do in life.

inerte··on ChatGPT Pulse
I think you meant app users churn less, not that more app usage brings new users. But I think you said the later? Doesn't make much sense.

Anyway, attention == ads, so that's ChatGPT's future.

inerte··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
If you're trying to do anything in terms of official documents, there's a middleman charging more. I searched for "passport application" the other day and it was 4 ads of people offering this service.

My dad was trying to get an ESTA visa a couple years ago and ended up paying twice the actual price, because he can't discern what's the official site or not.
