ineedaj0b··on The Collapse of the FDA
some drug are moneymakers. lots of people can take them. viagra was that or now ozempic etc. but there's lots of novel drugs that never get past testing because they cost too much or the market too small to recover profit.

these studies struggle to find candidates, the testers rarely have serious side effects, so i think on the net this will not cause the harm you worry.

however! i would be worried taking new broad market drugs post any fda collapse.. but there's fewer of those on average. and pharma companies compete on efficacy and side effects and love to show investors results. so mixed bag.

we play it too safe. ozempic will save many many lives. if it had been approved years earlier it would have saved many many more. waiting for perfect is what the current system feels like, and seems like something you also know is foolish.

18 studies. only 6 novel. not a healthy ecosystem imo

ineedaj0b··on The Collapse of the FDA
i know this is a very political thing now but i've had friends (smart phd people who work industry) very annoyed at the fda for many years, and maybe this collapse is good!

the fda started with a noble mission but they've been getting heavy handed. or better cliched - slow handed with getting things certified.

you can solve this one or two ways: drop regulation or increase staffing.

so many institutions have unnecessary fluff, tremendous red tape (why do i need environmental review to stick a shed in my backyard??), our modern lives have too much regulation.

let's hope for the best.

the old system is holding back drugs.. there should have been more ozempics, more breakthroughs had the fda not been so slow. companies have a strong incentive not release bad drugs now.. lawyers are not cheap and law firms know money can be made.. it's not the 1930s anymore.. (okay it's still the 1930s in certain places of the world, that's a criticism)

typing this out hoping to convince any regulation reduction is good reduction, i thought of a third fda option: the fda let's everyone go hog wild initially but looks at the top consumed products and checks them for safety and efficacy each year.

the problem is the power grid in India is terrible, and you still need to bribe people to get things done. i have family in manufacturing, they said the bribing isn't too much hassle but the power grid being so bad isn't worth the investment.
ineedaj0b··on Sega mistakenly reveals sales numbers of popular games
it sold well because i've bought a copy on every console. i'd play for 30 mins, get bored, and quit. it finally took after i played for 5 hours straight. i finally got 'it'. try playing it on break at work. you've really got to get a few hours in because the game's first level is basically a huge tutorial.
ineedaj0b··on Guess I'm a rationalist now
rationalism got pretty lame the last 2-3 years. imo the peak was trying to convince me to donate a kidney.

post-rationalism is where all the cool kids are and where the best ideas are at right now. the post rationalists consistently have better predictions and the 'rationalists' are stuck arguing whether chickens suffer more getting factory farmed or chickens cause more suffering eating bugs outside.

they also let SF get run into the ground until their detractors decided to take over.

ineedaj0b··on Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant for essay writing task
i really tire of people always asking for studies for obvious things.

have sword skills declined since the introduction of guns? surely people still have hands and understand how to move swords, and they use knives to cut food for consumption. the skill level is the same..

but we know on aggregate most people have switched to relying on a technological advancement. there's not the same culture for swords as in the past by sheer numbers despite there being more self proclaimed 'experts'.

100 genz vs. 100 genx you'll likely find a smidgen more of one group than the other finding a location without a phone.

too bad im not a female who wears a burka.

closest thing we have workable day to day are gaiters (balaclavas imo don't work outside cold winter months, gaiters you can where in hot weather too - get it wet, it'll shed heat)

still doesn't help with the eyes. or your gait. and face masks have people rolling their eyes at you and likely will for the next 5-10 years, despite sorta working if you're sick.

ineedaj0b··on Claude 4
i pay for claude premium but actually use grok quite a bit, the 'think' function usually gets me where i want more often than not. odd you don't have any xAI models listed. sure grok is a terrible name but it surprises me more often. i have not tried the $250 chatgpt model yet though, just don't like openAI practices lately.

ineedaj0b··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from 'reciprocal' tariffs
they thought it up and published a report back on it in nov 2024.

here's the plan, you can use it to advise your investments:

https://www.hudsonbaycapital.com/documents/FG/hudsonbay/rese...

the media is garbage and they can't cover anything well enough to inform. but i bet clicks are up!

economics is a lot of made up theory and not hard science. you won't get any of his smarter supporters replying because even if they did you're showing an inability to model best-case. i mean you're personally at a loss?

if you took the average supporter of both sides neither seem smart. the clips they have of both sides is shameful. but those aren't the people implementing the policy, but they both support their tribes.

if you really are interested in understanding how they think you couldn't do worse than this:

ineedaj0b··on France's new high-speed train has Americans asking: Why can't we have that?
The best rail being built in the US is in Florida, the brightline:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brightline

it's a tad expensive for a lot of people, and doesn't go as fast as it could because it uses existing lines but.. it's pretty good. it came about during the 08' recession, florida (gov Rick Scott) cancelled what was going to be a statewide rail line to save money. i remember nearly all the people i mentioned it too wished it had been kept. whoever the man/team/group that eventually founded brightline they fought an uphill battle but it helped most seniors in the state at the time could remember the US with trains and it had broad public interest, along with the backing of Disney.

it's still really hard to use only the train in FL. florida is very spaced out and a misery of heat during the summer. you can avoid the heat if you go from inside>car>inside, but trains lend themselves to walking.

having optionality is nice and i take it at least once month for the novelty and invite friends on to hopefully build awareness.

the us can build great things. we just need more builders to take their eyes off software and go back to public projects.

ineedaj0b··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
i've seen certain groups defend war (really cannot imagine this) and now i'm hearing from the same group i'm a part of, well it's okay to off-shore all this because the president doesn't like offshoring? for years fashion forums have bemoaned the offshoring of american clothing. if the president said he supported communism, would certain groups suddenly become free market capitalists?

have people always been like this? was this 'anything but agree' position common back in the 70s and 80s? is this an american thing or christian society thing?

ineedaj0b··on AI models miss disease in Black and female patients
you ain't gonna like the truth but there are differences between the races and during med school they try to say it ain't so but once you start seeing patients there's differences in musculature/skin, all sorts. and if you have a good attending they tactfully tell you and you go 'was it in a study?' and nope nobody wants to publish it. and no i'm talking just stuff like scabies or diabetes.
ineedaj0b··on The Great Barefoot Running Hysteria of 2010
i started and ran a barefoot running club back then. it doesn't make your foot stronger. but you do learn to put up with pain.

i did real no shoe barefoot running and pushed most people to try that. it did have an effect; no more twisted ankles. i got them quite often and never after 3 months of no shoes. there was a kid who eventually played d1 ball who joined because he had 'bad ankles' and still credits me for solving that.

you can get all the benefits of barefoot running by running or jogging once a week on a beach or soft grass soccer field. i think it's building up muscles in the leg to better balance you. no changes occur in the actual foot.

What have you noticed Gemini doing well on? I have not used it enough
ineedaj0b··on Claude can now search the web
i stopped using Claude about 2 months ago. went to Grok (the code was better, everything was better - politics aside). i wonder if this update will improve it.

the main issue i find with Claude is, he fights you. He refuses so many requests and i need 3 or 4 replies to get what i want vs deepseek/grok. i've kept the monthly subscription to help anthropic, but it's trounced by the free options imo.

ineedaj0b··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union
that's likely why you're an ex-game dev if you didn't know about Halo 3
ineedaj0b··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union
looking at the games US workers have put out... this is only gonna make 'western' games worse.

US games are in a tremendous slump of quality and seem to be slop factories rn. Add in unions, I don't know. I don't see this helping the slop factories become not slop factories.

ineedaj0b··on Leaked Apple meeting shows how dire the Siri situation is
siri was under performing for years: im a 'heavy' user - it's been terrible. it worked better in 2012 and slowly got worse. it's acceptable in 2025 but not good.

the siri division was caught nlp-ing anonymized data and totally sideswiped by llms. they have not transitioned. generally apple finds a Moses (like they did with m1 chips), hires a cracked team to build out but.. the salaries they offer don't touch openai or anthropic and who wants to work with nut that was building out siri initially? the guy is terrible

steve would have gutted the siri team. switched to a <100 person team and they'd have something nice 2025, even unique. apple is the team i expected to have deepseek type innovations on limited hardware. instead she wants to search the internet for what my local humidity levels are.

ineedaj0b··on What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today (2017)
there's plenty of paradise like islands in the pacific. you could move all the canadians to siberia's tundra and they'd probably do well.

devil's advocate: GODZILLA and all the excitement and joy the franchise gave people would not be as much a thing without the US trying to blow bikini atoll off aerial maps.

ineedaj0b··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
you bring up good points. but you should also keep in mind sometimes young kids who don't know any better often do a pretty good job.

any attempt to 'do it right' is also meetings and panels and... more ways to slow down and avoid being removed. it's tough

ineedaj0b··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
i don't have any experience in high level CEO stuff, but i heard when companies are purchased (takeover's etc.) they say consider what you need to cut; then cut double what you initially think.

i think you should keep in mind that both parties have very smart people in them that care about the country and are trying to do the right thing.

it's a shame the best gov employees are probably non-partisan but you'll never see them in those jobs.

ineedaj0b··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
pragmatically, costs. to do it right you need to promise the data isn't leaving, so you'd need to deploy your own stack (costly but not too much). you're explicitly replacing 'people' which left or right probably don't have much support for and people already are incensed when they hear about Musk/Trump, now bring in Machines taking Jobs.

it could happen in the next 4 years, i wouldn't write it off. but all cabinet members need to bring themselves up to speed. trump appears to be moving quickly but it's because he spent 2+ years thinking up everything he's doing. i doubt cabinet picks spent similar time - they probably weren't even sure he'd pick them.

ineedaj0b··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
the 'fraud' will come out around midterms when it's politically advantageous to have publicity.
ineedaj0b··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
all those perspectives have truth to them but you're missing a third: they are preparing for automation.

you can drastically reduce workforce sizes at all companies. AI hasn't done this yet because there's no hole to fill; people fill the hole happily. but.. it's coming and we all know how behind gov (and many businesses) navigate compared to our best tech companies. this reduction in gov size will happen first, then maybe 2026 or whenever you'll hear stories of legislation to increase pay for gov workers and congress to attract better talent.

ineedaj0b··on 2025 Hiring Pause
How are the ivy leagues NOT financially independent? People claw/cheat/do whatever it takes to get in. Ivy's employ some of the best raw IQ people we have. Endowment funds over years should blossom.

Could they be so smart to 'redline', to maximally extract as much funds from the Gov as possible while also pumping up their investments? Or might they not have managed funds well enough and truly cannot afford things?

if scenario 1) refactor expenses, pass an audit, and make a plan to build up funds. return to 75% prior budget levels

if scenario 2) refactor expenses, pass an audit, and make a plan to build up funds. return to 25% prior budget levels

*in both cases we need to remove regulations on schools so they can fire all the admin (they claim to need to keep up legally inane wild things) and pay the professors/researchers more.

Colleges and Universities are already on a downward trend; the perfect storm of declining enrollment/population numbers and AI potentially wiping out what they offer. Colleges and University were meant to be a special protected Eunuch class studying 'the dark arts', but they've publicly become known havens of scheming Eunuchs trying to overthrow the emperor. Too close to the sun
