indianmouse··on Ask HN: Is Samsung phones created according to a planned obsolescence schedule?
Agreed. I'm looking to downgrade the OS if possible. (i.e., if the phone comes back to life as it is currently in a 24Hr lock screen unlock disabled state). Or try some fixes said by various XDA-Forum members. Like downgrading or wiping the device etc. etc., I refuse to believe it is a hardware issue as it has been on since a couple of days.
indianmouse··on India Launches $2B Drive to Woo Laptop Makers Like Apple
Yep. Union worker issues, quality issues. Raw materials demand etc., etc., A lot more issues. It's getting costly to run a factory in India at a large scale. Though it might favor big businesses due to the fat margins on which they operate, but the margin gets thinner and they might look for cheaper places to setup alternatives. Inflation is one big worry and almost all state and the central union govt operates with utmost corruption!
indianmouse··on India Launches $2B Drive to Woo Laptop Makers Like Apple
heh! never ever setup a factory there. Too many issues and none of the govt initiatives are supportive. It's only on paper and the ground reality will kill you. Much worse than another countries. It might favor big businesses though if it gets under the table support!!
indianmouse··on Hakari – the hardest puzzle game you'll ever play
Please don't spoil the fun. Let people find out on their own.
indianmouse··on The limits of "computational photography"
Exactly like it was explained. People who speaks French or German (I'm just referring the language. No offense please), could only talk to people who know that language. While the majority is English speaking (Hypothetically!), it might make sense to speak that and also, whatever 10bit or 8Bit, the sensor size and capabilities matter. Most of the perception is seriously overrated with the iDevices (the displays and the sensors etc.,etc.,) while I may not able to articulate it technically, it's just 0.00001% of the appealing population (who might be using it in the intended way and might require that in that format!!)

When it comes out of the ecosystem, it has to understand and speak English. No matter how good it might in French or German.

So, the argument is pretty subjective and no point in continuing as no one knows what is under the hood and how it appeals to the eyes. It's subjective and it may or may not have all the required details for it to survice outside of the ecosystem. It's what one calls in vendor lock-in. One needs all idevice and isoftware ecosystem to function and survive in the iworld. And that world is mostly controlled and directed by the company!

This might look like too much of deviation from the topic, but it is how the idevices are portrayed to the world and how the ifanbois take it. It's is just overrated.

indianmouse··on The limits of "computational photography"
The smartphone cameras have improved a lot in the recent years, but they cannot compete or match a full frame sensor provided the limitations. The size of the sensor and the optics play a major role in the final image quality and one can only do so much with the computational photography or whatever method.

Especially the iPhone photography and videography is always overrated by the fanbois and some of the "professionals". While it might look good on "some" pictures with the heavy post processing, it just doesn't have any details. It might just appeal fine for a 100% view of the picture as is and even the slightest post processing or editing done on the output pictures ruins them a lot.

One has to depend upon what the developer of the application or the manufacturer thinks is the right picture (and who the hell are they to decide what my photo should look like?) and most of the time they are terribly wrong.

Apple is just overrated and for that matter, even some of the Android's as well.

Raw pics from a full frame sensors hold the fort and will continue to hold for a longtime to come unless the phones match DSLR in terms of sensor size and optics size. Until then "computational photography" will make the pictures look terrible and dictate how it has to look like.

I see a lot of comments where folks talk about RAW. But seriously, how does it matter for any normal user who tends to click a pic using the phone instead of a DSLR? If one is photographer, it makes sense, else it is additional workflow to get it in RAW and do the post processing on a computer... I'm just saying...

Thoughts welcome...

indianmouse··on A 23-byte “hello, world” program assembled with DEBUG.EXE in MS-DOS
This was like a time travel!!

Good old days of writing small utilities directly using Debug and modifying the disk sectors etc etc!!!

The Ralf Brown's Interrupt List was the bible for me... It went on until late 2000s is when I moved out of ASM to C.

Now fiddling with Golang and Rust, but anytime would prefer C or ASM or C with ASM.

Please don't jump on me as I've been primarily in the System's programming and in Information Security for my entire life. No other lang supports me like C / ASM.

indianmouse··on India drafts rules to stop developer mode and side loading of apps
They shoould ban the sale of knives in India. You know... It is a murder weapon and used to kill people!!

Useless people sitting at the top. Don't know any way to manage except for ban or kill...

indianmouse··on Ask HN: Why is there no performant remote desktop for Mac/Linux?
Really interesting conversations here! Thanks community.

Is there any free / open source solution for Mac? Parsec is really nice. So is JumpDesktop. But running a closed source is a little jittery because no one knows what it could do and capable of.

The workflow does require some security and privacy since it is not like gaming. Sometimes accessing a sensitive file or a document across multiple networks requires the opensource software's trust which can never be provided by any closed source application.

Some of the mentioned solutions like RustDesk is really good and it is open source and can be self hosted (it does win on many areas naturally!), but it still lacks the performant part to the likes of Parsec or JumpDesktop or similar high performance RDP solutions. Anydesk is again closed source.

indianmouse··on Save the Soil
Because of various reasons that requires privacy and security. You never know how these goons operate. They will hunt and haunt you. There is no freedom of speech in this country. They'll simply kill you. Period.
indianmouse··on Save the Soil
Jaggi's truth for the people to read and understand about how the conman (the biggest of all with the blessings of the ruling party) built the colossal wealth.

If you have enough money and political support, you could pretty much do anything in this world!

indianmouse··on Save the Soil
Yep. He hates it to the core. Yet he is a Jaggi. Once a Jaggi, always a Jaggi.

He wants everyone to address him as Sadhguru... Whatever that means it anyways!!

Shame to the guru word!

indianmouse··on Save the Soil
Wow! One of the biggest con man has made it to HN as well?

He is commoditizing soil and has found a new way to make money.

For those who really worry about soil and the facts spoken or presented by him, it is a total garbage and it done purely as a publicity stunt so that people will start buying the so called blessed soil from him (??).

Buying the blessed soil (whose soil is it anyway?) will save the soil from degrading? Poeple get to buy some soil samples blessed (!!??) by this conman and keep it in their homes and expect the soil is saved while he happily walks towards the bank laughing about people's stupidity!!!

Really??

One has to blame everyone in the entire process. Not just the use of chemical fertilizers. Greed driven by demand, corporatization of essential commodities, globalization of govts and pure profit based approach is making the life on this beautiful planet a deteriorating hell! Sooner or later, it will become like the scenes of Wall-E movie where people abandon the planet and start to wander around for a better quality of life albeit with some differences.

The propaganda should have been to stop using chemicals and pesticides, move towards organic method of farming and educating people about sustainable living and introducing technology guidance, reducing dependencies and a changed economic models... But it all sounds like Utopian wishes and might never come true on this godforsaken planet with the current set of population and people's mindset...

HN is a fantastic community with great minds wandering across multitude of topics and I hope they don't buy into this BS!!!

indianmouse··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
This has been around for a long time. I personally maintain all the information in the following format. I hope someone finds it useful.

https://lifehacker.com/organize-your-familys-essential-infor...

and what my family should know incase if something happen to me.

https://ussvicb.org/documents/What%20My%20Family%20Should%20...

Somethings like the above. I've added more info such as 2FA etc in a separate sheet and saved all QR Codes for all the 2FA in my Authenticator apps, and printed them and kept two copies of it in two different locations known to family members. Updates are added as additional sheets to the binder as new codes are added and as a practice, one full dump around a 6 months to 8 months is also added.

You never know what emergency might come in.

Just for fun though!

indianmouse··on Ask HN: GitHub repository's Network graph is not working
Yes. I tried across Firefox, Chrome, Safari across Windows 10, Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 and Mac OS Monterey across two different broadband and mobile network.

Just to make sure that it was not just me who is experiencing the issue before posting it.

Getting the same issue and broken rendering across all the systems.

indianmouse··on Windows Sysinternals: advanced system utilities and technical information
I use clipdiary instead of Ditto and share the Db across using a filesync for a eternal and shared clipboard history.

The main site is http://softvoile.com/

Clipdiary is https://clipdiary.com

Though my db syncing doesn't always work like a charm, it still gets the job done. Use the freeware version which should be super sufficient for most of the users.

Checkout other tools which are good such as Flashnote.

indianmouse··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
Why in the world I've to change my access point to opt out of google's data collection? Why are they collecting information in the first place?

Stop collecting information. This is way beyond anything but privacy intrusion.

It's like telling another some big corporation that one has to change the name else they will profile you irrespective of what you do...

Atrocious isn't? Publicly available information doesn't mean that you will whatever you want with it.

Tomorrow, (already their OS, Android is doing it), they will collect everything about a person and this is going way beyond who has signed up for. This needs to stop. All in the name of providing services or improving lives of people. Who cares about the dark side? How much profiling has gone into the collected data? What kind of risks it may pose in the future?

This needs to stop... the sooner the better...

Everyone has the right to be private. It doesn't mean one has to throw away everything in public about them. Isn't?

I know I might start another discussion thread, but I'm sure there will be people who will battle for and against... But it doesn't matter...

indianmouse··on Ask HN: Is the Blockchain Hype Ended?
In my personal opinion, it is just getting started. There are people from many countries who are looking at crypto as a means to do their living and blockchain is getting more and more visibility. There are govts. trying to block the blockchain developments because of the traceability and immutability properties.
