imzadi··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
Maybe if they made it on effective tax rate. Your vote is weighed based on the percentage of INCOME that is taxed, but everyone gets a vote regardless.
imzadi··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
My theory about this, as well as how it seems most powerful are abusers, is that you have to be willing to comprosmise your morality to get into that position in the first place. So it is not that being rich and powerful corrupts you, but you have to already be at least somewhat corrupt to get there at all.
imzadi··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
I learned to code on an LP MUD back in the late 90s. It was a fun experience.

I did all my work in the MUD interface using ED. I didn't realize other people wrote their code offline and sh'd in to upload it. I got very good at writing and editing code on the command line.

imzadi··on Can a MUD evaluate LLMs? A $99 proof of concept
This is a text-based game, but it is not a MUD. The MU in MUD stands for multi-user.
imzadi··on Does creatine make you smarter?
This made me wonder if sun exposure/vitamin D has any impact on storing or processing creatine, and maybe that's why the results in Australia were so much greater
imzadi··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
I use an accessible font myself. There are steps to getting the font installed, but you only have to do it once. You basically just download it, convert it, and then upload it to a specific folder. The upload part is the main hassle, because it doesn't attach to the PC like a drive. You have to remove the SD card, open the SD card on the PC or phone and move the font (or book) to the SD card, then put the SD card back into the reader.
imzadi··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
Just FYI for anyone reading this. "Easy to do" is an understatement. It's merely a matter of connecting the reader to the PC with a USB cable and then click the button on the webpage. The whole process is automated and done over the web.
imzadi··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
Some of the firmwares have dictionaries, but I don't use it myself.
imzadi··on Back to Kagi
I've switched to Kagi full time. I even use Orion on ios and wish there was an Android version. Kagi translate is superior to Google translate, also. I love that it gives me a more direct translation and then suggests alternatives and tells me what situations they would work best in.
imzadi··on Back to Kagi
LLM's are just summarizing search results and not always well. This is like asking if academic papers are relevant when college essays exists, imo. I would much rather read the original source of the material than the summarized (potentially badly) LLM result.
imzadi··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
If the login nag bothers you, narrow the screen until it disappears. You'll then have access to a hamburger for navigation
imzadi··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
No. You would have to get it onto your kindle and then break DRM. I personally wouldn't go that far, since the library is paying for it and not me. I feel like if I pay for something, I have the right to back it up how I see fit, whether the law agrees or not, but if I didn't pay for it, it is not mine.

Look into Calibre.
imzadi··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
I got an Xteink X4 a few weeks ago and love it. I've tried out a few different firmwares but haven't settled on one yet. I love the screen and how simple the interface is. It's kind of a pain in the butt getting my Kindle books on there, but worth the effort. It's also encouraging me to buy books outside of the Amazon ecosystem. I've been getting more stuff from Humble lately.
imzadi··on EEG shows brain can simultaneous encode two speech streams
I've noticed something similar. I can listen to audiobooks and follow/absorb what is going on without really paying attention, as long as I am not trying to read something. I can't follow an audiobook and read at the same time. This is probably because I subvocalize when I read. I have taken speed reading courses but I don't enjoy reading that way. I like feeling every word as I read.
imzadi··on Book prizes don't work how you think
It's been a while, but Austin, Nicholl, Slamdance and Page are the main ones that I'd recommend. Smaller ones that include coverage might be worth it sometimes just to get the feedback. Get involved with some screenwriting communities and see which ones people are talking about the most.
imzadi··on Book prizes don't work how you think
I've read for screenwriting contests and it is pretty much the same thing. During the first round of reading, they usually expect you to read a minimum number of pages (usually 20 pages). Only one person will read your script during the first round, so if it doesn't catch their attention you will be cut. During the subsequent rounds you are generally expected to read the whole thing, but most of the worst stuff has already been eliminated. In some contests you can see the coverage from previous judges and some you can't. It all depends.
imzadi··on Twain Town, USA
My dumb ass expecting this to be about scanning
imzadi··on A tiny cell that broke a big rule of biology
This is a nicely written article, which feels like a rarity lately.
imzadi··on Snails' teeth beats spider silk as nature's strongest material (2015)
Oops
imzadi··on Snails' teeth beats spider silk as nature's strongest material (2015)
Snails had a good run being ignored by everyone but the French and now we're smearing their slime on our faces and trying to turn their teeth into armor.
imzadi··on Proton AG Services is currently experiencing some issues
I've had proton for years and have no complaints. I can only think of one or two other outages in that time. Most services do have outages from time to time. tbf, I don't seem to be having any issues with proton today, so far.

imzadi··on Newly discovered spider builds spring loaded snare to catch ants
I don't think I've been disappointed by anything from Adrian Tchaikovsky, tbh. Alien Clay and Service Model are also great.
imzadi··on Frog-derived gut bacterium eradicates tumors in mice
It is an immunity reaction. The bacteria multiplied in the tumors until they triggered an immunity response, which caused the body to destroy the tumors along with the bacteria. Whether or not it translates to humans remains to be seen.
imzadi··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
I hope it eats you if you don't wear your Christmas clothes
imzadi··on The Xteink X4 E-Ink Reader
If you are looking for a more affordable option, I have a Musnap Ocean C. It's a little bare bones, but still pretty good. It's a color e-ink display and you can get an optional pen that lets you take notes. I only use it for books and documents, though. It's the best option under $300 that I have found if you want something that is color and can take hand written notes.
imzadi··on Giant Banana Pulled Over: Driver Says Cops Have Stopped Him 100s of Times
There's always money in the banana car
imzadi··on Spotify killed the thrill of the hunt
This year I have been using spotify more. I do like being able to create custom playlists, but I don't always like the suggested songs after the playlist ends. I'll make a playlist like "Upbeat dance music that includes popular hits from the last 10 years and newer hits that I haven't heard yet. No country. Keep it positive and upbeat." And it will mostly abide the instructions, though I can never escape having a few songs about wanting to kill a b*tch for being a ho, or some such thing, but as soon the initial playlist ends it's all country and country light even though I never listen to country.
imzadi··on Google Chrome update will close the door on ad blockers
I've been using Orion with Kagi for search. Every once in a while I hit a site that won't work on Orion (looking at you Cafe Zupas), but then I jump over to firefox.
