illuminati1911··on Chinese authorities say overtime '996' policy is illegal
I’ve been working in software engineering in China for few years now. Never worked for 996 company, but I know many who do.

Most of the 996 companies that I’ve seen tend to be ultra shitty sweatshops delivering less than bare minimum and with less security than what a university CS freshman would implement. There are obviously exceptions to this, but in China culturally speaking, it’s often much more important what things look like than what they actually are. That’s the core essense of 996. As long as you seem to be working hard and long time, everything else is secondary.

I find it ridiculous how random business managers in EU and US say this shit show would be competitive advantage. It’s everything but.

That being said China has several real competitive advantages over western countries, but media rarely speaks about then.

illuminati1911··on Aspartame and cancer – new evidence for causation
Those are all correlations and observational studies. There is no actual evidence of any meat increasing risk of cancer.
illuminati1911··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
How is explicit discrimination and racial segregation ”a fight to end discrimination”?

All this ”we have long history is america black slavery blaablablah” is not any kind of a counter argument. By segregating people you are doing exactly the same thing what slave owners, south africans and those hillbilly right wing extremists do.

illuminati1911··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
Maybe(?) the intension is good behind this kind of services, but honestly this is #1 reason why we will never get rid of racism. It just gets rebranded and will stay with as long as there are humans.
illuminati1911··on Driving engineers to an arbitrary date is a value destroying mistake (2020)
I guess it depends how you look at it, but regarding my point it isn’t.

For example most ecom apps/sites are surely ”unique” based on how you described it, but customers have nearly unlimited options/alternatives these days.

illuminati1911··on Driving engineers to an arbitrary date is a value destroying mistake (2020)
” A high level of quality in software is not important unless you're entering an already well-served market. I wish it was.”

I’d say better way to say the same thing would be ”Unless you are building something truly innovative and unique that people must use anyway no matter how bad the experience is, software quality matters.”

illuminati1911··on What do many terrorists have in common? They abuse women
This probably has nothing to do with ”abusing women”, but it’s just generally about being a violent individual.
illuminati1911··on EU unveils sweeping climate change plan
That’s what the carbon taxes are for.
illuminati1911··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps
I use Apple Maps in Shanghai. It's very fast, accurate and shows bicycle/scooter lanes, indoor maps for malls etc. very well.

Google Maps even with VPN (to bypass the censorship) is nearly unusable here by modern map software standards.

illuminati1911··on YouTube takes down Xinjiang videos, forcing rights group to seek alternative
Google is actually operating in mainland China. They have offices here (Engineering, Sales etc.) in Shanghai and AFAIK they are involved in some advertisement business. They also organize events here every once in a while.
illuminati1911··on Justice at Spotify
Clearly it is as artists are not starving and can pay for their rent, lifestyle etc.

They just simply ”want more”, and who wouldn’t, but free market and supply/demand disagrees with them. If artists don’t like Spotify’s offering they can pull their music out of the service.

illuminati1911··on I helped build ByteDance's censorship machine
I've lived in China for few years.

I haven't asked everyone I know, but based on my feeling most people don't like it. That being said, for most Chinese not liking the censorship is kind of like not liking a bad weather. You don't like it, but you accept it and move on.

Also based on my experience, most white collars (or at least ones working for international companies) in China have either direct or indirect access to the uncensored internet. Companies are allowed to purchase access to VPNs (legal, government approved) to bypass the censorship. This is so that they can access Google, YouTube, banned social media etc. to help them to do international business. Lot of companies integrate these VPNs directly into their corporate wifis meaning that all employees in the company network can bypass the censorship.

Despite having the unblocked access, I've noticed that only very few Chinese are interested in reading foreign news sources or using foreign social media/video platforms.

illuminati1911··on The Shame of Swedish Education: J’Accuse
Proving logical fallacy in the article?
illuminati1911··on Europe's Vaccine Disaster
It is at least partly developed (or funded) publicly.

Lots of comments are complaining about how EU "paid less" for the vaccine than country XYZ, but actually EU funded AstraZeneca with hundreds of millions of euros to develop the vaccine in the first place.

In any case unless AZ, EU etc. are able to come to reasonable agreement I think this might eventually lead to EU simply breaking the patent and then anyone can make the vaccine. That would be extremely hardcore measure to use, but in current situation, definitely possible.

illuminati1911··on AstraZeneca/EU contract
None of that is really relevant. Both AZ and EU agreed to this contract. If AZ has signed a contract that they cannot fulfill, then they have commited a fraud.
illuminati1911··on Poland plans to make censoring of social media accounts illegal
This comment is beyond ridiculous. Private American corporations are not above law or democratically elected governments. This is not any different than GDPR or other regulations.

I think the difference is that unlike spoiled American "Bernie Sanders voter"-generation, Polish people still remember what it's like to live under a far-left censorship and simply do not want to experience that again.

illuminati1911··on Apple launches new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects
I think private companies can decide themselves what companies they want to invest in. Whatever the reason is, even outside of US. So I'm pretty sure this is legal.

As European (we don't have this racial segregation fetish so please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject) I'm more interested how they define black and brown companies? What if the company is owned by 3 people, 2 black, 1 white? Will they invest 33% less because the company is partially owned by a person of wrong race? What if it's 50/50? What about muslims? Women? LGBTQ? What if the company is owned by white people, but upper management is fully black? Where do they draw the line?

illuminati1911··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
Not too long ago there was an article on CNN about regulating the social media platforms. Author said: "It doesn't really matter whether these platforms are biased towards liberals or conservatives, the real question is why have we given them this power in the first place."

That was well said. Too bad after Biden's victory, CNN or no one on the democratic side cared about this anymore. Some surely do, but at least it's not being discussed anymore as much as before.

Lots of people ask "But Twitter is a private company, shouldn't they be allowed to do whatever they want with their platform?"

Well, unless we live in a complete anarcho-capitalism, no they should not. They need to follow the law and laws can be changed to match with the current situation.

The core issue is that Twitter, Facebook etc. are defacto information sources and platforms for most people on Earth. These companies are managed by radical leftists in Califonia and when they start to decide what information should be visible and what information should not be visible, they create an existential threat to democracies and societies all around the world as well as freedom of speech, politics, religion etc.

Government/Union regulation is not the solution either, but better than this.

illuminati1911··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
” The western liberal value of free speech has never extended to incitement of violence. My assumption is that the leaders of Apple, Google, and Amazon don't want to provide a platform for sedition.”

This illogical lie get spammed here on every single news discussion about this event, yet no one has still answered why did those platforms allow leftwing/blm terrorists and other violent organizations spread their hate for years?

”Western liberal values” seem to only apply when it doesn’t harm the agenda and interests of the people who vote for the ”right” party.

illuminati1911··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
When will people ask Twitter, FB etc. to do the same?
illuminati1911··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
It’s kind if funny and ironic seeing arguments like ”they need moderation”, ”we can’t allow violent extremists yadda yaddah...”

Yet this was never a problem and still isn’t anywhere else except in the context of Trump supporters. Radical left wing terrorist groups and openly violent people are directly getting funded and praised by the owners of these platforms not only tolerated.

illuminati1911··on Ugandan government blocks Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and YouTube
” When, as the capitol is being ransacked, you double down on the lie and continue to say the election was stolen, and to say you love them, you are continuing the riot and you are trying incite nationwide unrest.”

You conveniently leave out the fact that he explicitly and clearly told them to stop doing it ”go home”. Yet this was again censored by the big tech.

I don’t like Trump either, but let’s stop lying about ”doubling down” etc.

illuminati1911··on Ugandan government blocks Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and YouTube
” People are being shut down for being part of an offensive minority that supports extreme behaviors and statements.”

Yet, last year Twitter and Reddit was full of BLM/Antifa supporters calling for and supporting cleansing of white people, republicans, Trump voters etc. without any kind of censorship.

Also for past decade these platforms have been safe harbor for terrorist organizations, cartels, gangs, government media from countries that do extreme human rights violations etc. No problem there either except sometimes when the shitstorm get big enough.

Apparently though some mentally unstable QAnon hillbillies stealing speakers stands are more extreme than countries and organizations involved in slavery, genocide, mass murder or terrorism.

illuminati1911··on Show HN: Convier.me – A Calendar Service for Developers
Lot of Asian countries use YYYY/MM/DD like China, Japan, South Korea etc.
illuminati1911··on Google Bans Parler from the Google Play Store
Twitter, Youtube and Facebook were also used to coordinate last years Antifa/BLM riots that caused 25-ish deaths, hudreds or thousands of injuries, uncountable financial damage to government, local businesses, homes yet this was never a problem.

Also cartels and terrorist groups have used these platforms to spread their propaganda for a decade now with barely any censorship.

illuminati1911··on UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal
For starters brexit has already costed UK more than all of their EU membership payments they have ever made combined.

Now they have agreement that will give them the same access to EU market what they used to have while UK was part of EU, but if they want to use that access they have to follow all the EU rules and regulations like other EU member states.

Only thing that changed is that UK no more has any decision making power within EU.

illuminati1911··on CD Projekt Conference Call with the Management Board [pdf] (Dec 14)
I'm not familiar with Polish labour law, but it could be that in Poland like in many other European countries concepts such as "denying overtime" are inherently illegal.
illuminati1911··on Twitter may slow down users’ ability to ‘like’ tweets containing misinformation
Logical fallacy.

Twitter is not free speech system to begin with so ”free speech” purists are not obligated to be ok with this unless the whole platform is based on free speech. In that kind of system any user would be able to prompt any popup for any user when they are about to like any tweet. Now only twitter has that power.

illuminati1911··on Euclid – Scientific calculator for iOS/macOS
Looks nice, but another ”free” app. Would be nice to at least know what the ”premium” features are that are locked behind that pretty high price of 5,49€.

Downloading and figuring out is just too much trouble.
