ill0gicity··on The Making of John Wayne
The Shootist was one, if not the, first John Wayne movies I can remember watching as a kid. At the time I took the movie at face value wanting to be like Gillom learning to shoot. As an adult watching it I can see the truth of the story: the pain of an old man wanting to leave life in a manner of his choosing, and being disappointed that in the end he could not control it.

Sure, most of his characters were macho, misogynistic, and perhaps a touch racist, but was that his portrayal of the character drawn from his knowledge of what got him jobs, the writers, or perhaps both? Maybe he was simply the victim of type-casting. We see type-casting a lot these days: Keira Knightley seems stuck with period-piece roles, Jim Carrey is one of the go-to guys in the comedy realm, Jennifer Aniston is perpetually the ditsy girl, and it just goes on from there. Certain actors and actresses seem destined to play only a single type of role because of their looks. It's as true then as it is now. You could argue that these people accept the roles so they're as much to blame as the casting agents, but if the only roles they're offered are these type-casted ones who's really to blame? Sorry, I digress.

To me the story of Gran Torino is very similiar to that of The Shootist. It's been updated for the times, but at its core it's still about an old man tutoring a young boy and choosing how he'll die. Is the Clint Eastwood story better? I think that depends on who you ask. Is the character of Walt Kowalski better than J.B. Books? That depends on your definition of better. I believe there are things to learn from both characters and both stories. And while these things may not always be good, they are still important to know.

ill0gicity··on Ending an Albania-Serbia Game and Inciting a Riot with a Drone
A drone is fully autonomous. If you are remotely controlling the craft it is unmanned. I guess referring to a multirotor as a "UAV" just doesn't grab people like "drone".
ill0gicity··on Fifth Amendment Flowchart
That is one of the most impressive and informative flowcharts I've seen in a long time. The 5th Amendment is a tricky thing and this cleared it up quite a bit. That said, there will always be fringe cases and people should be using their brain and not just blindly following a flowchart.
ill0gicity··on Rules for Professional JavaScript in 2015
Learned a few things, namely that <script> tags in <head> block page rendering. Perhaps this is why I never tried to be a front-end engineer...
ill0gicity··on FAA Proposes Nearly $2M Fine Against Drone Operator
"We have the safest airspace in the world, and everyone who uses it must understand and observe our comprehensive set of rules and regulations."

tl;dr: We're safe because our rules are convoluted and scare people away.

ill0gicity··on Dragula: Drag and drop so simple it hurts
Just playing with the demos and I feel like Dragula is far better than jQueryUI's sortable(). I know what I'm tinkering with over the weekend. Bye bye UI... I was bit by Dragula.
ill0gicity··on Carbon: The Next Generation of Weebly
There is an export site functionality which gives you everything: HTML, CSS, images, uploaded files, etc... I'd never actually tried it until now, so thank you :-)
ill0gicity··on Carbon: The Next Generation of Weebly
If they have old URLs you can use the redirects under "Settings" -> "SEO". Oddly placed, but hey, the functionality is there. And for non-techies I think Weebly is wayyyy better than WordPress.
ill0gicity··on Modern anti-spam and E2E crypto
I don't believe Google wants to turn GMail into a data broker service, especially one that powerful. Why? Besides the obvious (spammers use it to learn how to beat the system, and other companies use it to compete with GMail) you'll be creating an insane amount of workload in having to deal with all the complaints. The current system of "spam is what our users say it is" leaves very little for debate. As someone who's run large email systems this appeals to my laziness.
