ilikecakeandpie··on Garmin beats Apple to market with satellite-connected smartwatch
They were definitely a major player for a long time prior to smartphones becoming the number one GPS solution (for most cars). Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, etc

ilikecakeandpie··on Why do victims of massacres go to their deaths?
Yeah there's a lot of terrible shit happening everywhere all the time and it's made worse by the fact that news outlets know they get more interest by showing the horrors instead of focusing on the good. I'm not saying that we as a people should put our heads in the sand and ignore or minimize what's going on outside of our sphere/echo chamber, but there's a lot of wisdom in the serenity prayer.
ilikecakeandpie··on Why do victims of massacres go to their deaths?
> Idk I used to look at em to remind myself/ground me of what I am

You doing ok? I embrace my cosmic insignificance for sure but it's more freeing to me that I don't have to measure myself by anyone's standards (within reason) except my own and those who I love vs to remind myself that I'm just going to be less than a blip in the timeline.

ilikecakeandpie··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
Again, no one forced anyone to vote for her; they chose to do so of their own volition. Bernie did not win because, for whatever reason, not enough people voted for him. I say this as someone who voted for him in 2016

To muse he would have beaten Trump is like saying the Bills could have beaten the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Maybe they could have, but they didn't beat the Chiefs. It's not a forgone conclusion that he would have beaten Trump, but even so it really doesn't matter because he lost in the primaries

ilikecakeandpie··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
Yep. Anyone saying that they are is being intellectually dishonest and likely trying to feel better about doing nothing
ilikecakeandpie··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
> dems couldn't be bothered to listen to the people

No one was forced to vote for Clinton and nominating a loser of the primary would have set an awful precedent.

ilikecakeandpie··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
Why wouldn't they? He's the president. As an official of the state he shouldn't say it if he doesn't mean it. The president isn't supposed to be fun or jokey

ilikecakeandpie··on The death of partying in the USA
I graduated in '05 and some of stuff my contemporaries were doing then wrt sports and trying to get to the next level was already crazy (playing for the school and doing travel ball as well, so many practices/camps/extra workout sessions) and don't get me started on the craziness wrestlers had to go through. I've heard it's even worse now as it has become more competitive to get to the next level, whether that's trying to get a good NIL deal or trying to play professionally
ilikecakeandpie··on Ask HN: How do I give back to people helped me when I was young and had nothing?
Think about something they like and get a nice version of it for them. Like if they like pens, get them a nice one with a note engraved

Pay it forward

ilikecakeandpie··on So Much Blood
Well one of these has to be incorrect then as this was said it was the US's ninth largest export

ilikecakeandpie··on So Much Blood
Behind the Bastards recently did a two part podcast on the blood industry in America, particularly how lack of regulation and taking advantage of the incarcerated (focused on Arkansas) led to the spread of blood borne illnesses and how it killed a lot of people. I had no idea blood was such big business and that it was in our top 10 domestic exports

The cases you're showing here are things that can also be accomplished by looking in books. You're describing Google if it actually worked

They shouldn't be surprised. Stuff like this is exactly what they said they were going to do and ~70 million voted for it and ~90 million weren't compelled enough to vote for the other viable choice or choices
ilikecakeandpie··on There is no Vibe Engineering
Why would I need a developer when I can build everything for my app WYSIWYG in Visual Studio?

Why would I need someone who specializes in databases when I can just build it in Access?

Why can't we just build our site in squarespace and not have any resources at all?

There's always something that is supposed to come around and replace engineers but it never comes to fruition. These attempts are good to build shallow products and MVPs. For "vibe" coding, the product will not be serviceable if the person who implements it does not understand what the code is doing. This is the equivalent of rote learning and expecting the implementer to be an expert

> 5 mins to rework your notes after each patient visit? I didn't assume doctors had that kind of time.

I worked in a healthcare for over a decade (actually for a company that Nuance acquired previous to their acquisition) and the previous workflow was they'd pick up a phone, call a number, say all their notes, and then have to revisit their transcription to make sure it was accurate. Surgeons in particular have to spend a ton of time on documentation

This is irrelevant. Do you bring up that before the industrial revolution that grown men used to marry children when people talk about modern views on grooming?

> Things can be said in anger, and not really meant. In fact I would wager out of all the death threats made in the entire world, the vast majority are said in anger and not meant to be followed through on. This is why we dont lock people up for just saying things. There needs to be other motives and evidence behind it to show intent.

You are incorrect, at least in California

In practice, the law not taking this seriously is how a lot of women in abusive relationships die

ilikecakeandpie··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Doug Jones was our last democratic politician on the national stage and he voted quite liberally. We just don't have many anymore, due to gerrymandering and our electorate. I think Terri Sewell is our only non-Republican

It is not the best

ilikecakeandpie··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> not talking Alabama dems here

As an Alabama Dem, this is something that is just so disappointing to see when we're assumed to be not "generally more left"

There are so many here supporting and doing good, hard work with things like the Yellowhammer Fund, ¡HICA!, and Magic City Acceptance Center and Academy but we have to fight for any acknowledgement. We had more people vote for Kamala than several states but they amount to nothing in the public eye. It's so deflating and discouraging
