ilamparithi··on Can we use Jenkins for that?
We have tried that as it is easy to learn the status of the job and view logs. But had problems while running many jobs simultaneously. Some jobs will hang. So now we are using Cron + Monitoring External Jobs Plugin in Jenkins(https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/Monitoring+exter...). This gives the performance of Cron and the above mentioned advantages of Jenkins.
ilamparithi··on Cron in production is a double-edged sword
We use https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/Monitoring+exter... to monitor the cron jobs.

ilamparithi··on Uber Opening Robotics Research Facility in Pittsburgh to Build Self-Driving Cars
I don't think so. Having an iPhone is considered a status symbol. If they started selling it for say Rs.20K, it will lose its allure.
ilamparithi··on Ask HN: What's a day in your life look like?
Thanks a lot OP. This is exactly something I wanted to ask. Of late I have been feeling like wasting lot of time. I was looking for some kind of inspiration to bring some order to my life.

ilamparithi··on Hawking: AI could end human race
Elon Musk is not from a different field. I wouldn't call him ignorant.
ilamparithi··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Sorry. My comment was not positive. I love YC and what they are doing. But the fact that they are turning a blind eye to these kind of practices has been a sore point for me. First AirBnB, then Rapgenius(now genius) with their black hat SEO and now you. I though YC was about helping geeks succeed without making compromises to their moral principles.
ilamparithi··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Its AirBnB all over again.
ilamparithi··on Poll: Are you a drinker or a teetotaler?
Teetotaler. Not very uncommon here(India) for my generation. It is a not a cultural thing and drinkers usually tried to hide the habit from their family (Though it is changing fast. It is considered cool now and movies and TV serials have at least one scene in a bar). Initially I didn't do it because it is generally considered as a bad habit and none of my close friends or relatives drank. Later I decided not to do that because I didn't want to lose my senses. I still remember a company outing where a colleague got naked in front of everybody after drinking. I don't to end up like that :-)
ilamparithi··on Indian E-Commerce Firm Flipkart Raises Eye-Popping $1B
Right. The filter options they have are much better than other e-commerce sites.
ilamparithi··on Indian E-Commerce Firm Flipkart Raises Eye-Popping $1B
Agree. Now a days I read the reviews on Flipkart and buy the product in Amazon.in. The price difference is significant and most of the time Amazon.in has free delivery while I have to pay extra in Flipkart.
ilamparithi··on How we nearly lost our domain, and how to prevent this
Another experience with NameCheap. It was April 2014. I got a domain expiry notification mail from them. I just saw that subject. The date mentioned was 4/6/2014. I am lazy and procrastinate a lot. So I saw the subject and decided that I'll renew later as I have two more months. On 6th April I got the message that my domain expired. Then I realized it was not Jun 4th as I originally thought. Not only the domain was expired, all the config details were lost. Luckily it was only entries pointing to Linode. So I quickly renewed the domain and added the entries. Still there was a considerable downtime and panic. I think companies which operate internationally should use unambiguous date formats. (Even if I had opened the email, I wouldn't have interpreted the date in any other way. It was the same format everywhere. I did give a feedback to them. Not sure whether they changed it or not).
ilamparithi··on Quora in the next YC batch
For me Quora is useful in finding alternative sites/software. For example, If I am looking for a web chat software, I can find most of the available solutions there. Of course, the information is biased because it is posted by the respective founders/CTOs. Still I can use that as a starting point for my research. I do hate that I have to login to read content but share=1 comes to the rescue.
ilamparithi··on Ask HN: What are the most inspirational blog posts you've ever read?
Almost all of Paul Graham's essays. Especially

How to Make Wealth - http://paulgraham.com/wealth.html How to Do What You Love - http://paulgraham.com/love.html Inequality and Risk - http://paulgraham.com/inequality.html

and Paul Buchheit's

My startup path - http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.in/2007/03/my-startup-path.html (I have actually printed a hard copy of this and have it my wallet. This is what finally convinced me to join a startup.)

ilamparithi··on Aaron Swartz commits suicide
As someone who has read pg's writings and watched YC grew, the reddit story is very close to my heart. I always felt I knew Aaron, Steve and Alexis well even though I never met or interacted with them. This is such a shock. RIP.

ilamparithi··on Phusion Passenger 4.0 beta 1 is here
For playframework apps?
ilamparithi··on Java's Cover (April 2001)
Very true. Most of the hate for java is actually because of the frameworks. But Play framework has made java web application development fun again. Also I find static typing very useful for large projects. Even though I go to python for small programs (file handling, quick database insert), I still go to java for large projects. What I miss in java is the succinctness of python(like list comprehension). But I still don't want to loose static typing. I thought scala was the answer. But I was not impressed when I tried it.
ilamparithi··on Shapecatcher - draw the unicode character you want
Great. Tried some Tamil characters. It was able to recognize most of them.
ilamparithi··on Modern Web Application Architecture
Whenever I heard about Amazon using SOA heavily, I thought this is how they implemented it (making HTTP requests to their own API). Is it true? If there is a performance penalty to this approach, what are the alternatives to call the internal services/APIs? People talk about services all the time, but no one talks about the actual implementation. Thanks to the blog author for documenting this. It would be great if someone could point out similar articles.
ilamparithi··on Why we dropped out of Yale to start a dating website
"Current dating sites are not the last word. Better ones will appear. But anyone who wants to start a dating startup has to answer two questions: in addition to the usual question about how you're going to approach dating differently, you have to answer the even more important question of how to overcome the huge chicken and egg problem every dating site faces. A site like Reddit is interesting when there are only 20 users. But no one wants to use a dating site with only 20 users—which of course becomes a self-perpetuating problem. So if you want to do a dating startup, don't focus on the novel take on dating that you're going to offer. That's the easy half. Focus on novel ways to get around the chicken and egg problem."

ilamparithi··on Chrome Beats Internet Explorer To Become #2 Browser in India
Not very surprising. I remember seeing full page ads for Chrome in major newspapers. I have also seen lot of word of mouth for Chrome and FF. (People asking friends, family members to try out Chrome or FF). I still remember the days when me and my friends used to install FF in all the browsing centers (not every one had broadband at that time) we visit when FF came out.

ilamparithi··on Towards Better Online Dating
If it is true, it is too bad. Don't we know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder? Someone you find attractive is ugly to somebody else and vice versa.
