ihatepython··on Ask HN: How do I thrive in an AI dominated future?
Don't worry, AI will cause a lot more problems than it will solve.
ihatepython··on Ask HN: How do I thrive in an AI dominated future?
> Focus on something you expect AI not to exceed professional humans at in the next couple of decades.

So I should focus on driving a car?

ihatepython··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
I'm pretty sure that being facetious is against the community guidelines.

The post really should be flagged immediately.

ihatepython··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
I agree but it's better than listening to Ed Sheeran

Edit: To be honest, I find something like 'Band In A Box' to be more impressive and actually useful, I don't understand how I would ever use this or listen to this. To me, it's further proof that Stable Diffusion really just doesn't work that well

ihatepython··on What if your entire worldview was just because of near-zero interest rates?
The Fed is one of the most misunderstood institutions. Basically, everything you have said is completely wrong, which makes difficult to write a reply, because where to start?

In short, the original design of the Fed was correct, where each branch was independent and could set their own interest rate, and they purchased commercial paper to stimulate the economy. This changed during WWII, where the government mandated that they had to purchase government bonds to support the war.

Congress is the main problem, where they spend money recklessly with no intention of paying anything back.

The Fed is in a position where if they don't raise interest rates, they will be blamed for the bad economy.

The Fed is a convenient scapegoat, used by people who assume that Youtube videos are correct.

ihatepython··on What I'd like to see in Emacs
Interesting.

I'm actually thinking of adding some kind of Pie menu to Ejacs, perhaps a Cream Pie menu would be appropriate

ihatepython··on What I'd like to see in Emacs
Ah, I think I understand.

Eight Jizzabytes And Constantly Swapping

ihatepython··on What I'd like to see in Emacs
Can you explain why that name is unfortunate?
ihatepython··on Adobe at 40
Macromedia actually acquired Flash as well, the original program was FutureSplash which was bought and re-branded by Macromedia, but this was a very early version
ihatepython··on Mac OS 9
Pretty sure it was Charcoal and not Geneva.
ihatepython··on After violent robberies, some photographers opt to stay away from San Francisco
> and it just doesn't make headline news?

It would only make headline news if the perpetrator was white. In the event that the perpetrator was black, the story would be quickly buried.

ihatepython··on Ask HN: Is there a hardest type of engineering or is it all easy?
Quantum engineering is both easy and hard.
ihatepython··on I/O is no longer the bottleneck
It's true, I/O is no longer the bottleneck.

The bottleneck now is interviewers who think they have the knowledge and expertise, but do not. However their authoritative position ends up distorting everything, and then said person blogs about it and causes even more problems.

ihatepython··on Subtext – A multi-user BBS server for classic macOS
Actually I think System 6 predates the Mac OS naming scheme
ihatepython··on How long would society last during a total grid collapse?
Are you familiar with how Putin came to power, the situation with Yeltsin, and Gorbachev?

Also, everything the media tells you is a lie to get everyone on one side.

ihatepython··on Improving Firefox stability on Windows by retrying failed memory allocation
> Crash logs are a different beast.

I was under the impression that Firefox was written in Rust. Doesn't this eliminate crashes? Rust is a safe language after all. There should not be any crash logs with Rust.

ihatepython··on TinyLLama – A Tiny x86 Retrocomputer
Just a sidenote, I have been able to run Windows 98 on an Ivy Bridge computer (an Optiplex). PCI cards work if you have drivers (I have a Soundblaster PCI128). My main motivation has been for MIDI, (Cubase 2.8). I haven't tried any games. When installing, run "setup.exe /p i" to disable ACPI which will mess up the installation.
ihatepython··on Ask HN: What weird technical scene are you fond/part of?
I'm probably wrong, but my intuition tells me (in terms of Theory of Computation) that Forth is a programming language for Push-Down-Automata, and not a full-blown Turing Machine.
ihatepython··on Live Coding Video Synth
Is this much different than Winamp's Advanced Visualization Studio? That was also 'programmable', depending on how you define programmable I suppose
ihatepython··on Live Coding Video Synth
Back in my day we called them visualizers
ihatepython··on Ask HN: Where does everyone go after mass layoffs?
> One junior programmer had to sell his Ducati, get a bus pass, and ended up in retail at Borders.

And then Borders went out of business.

ihatepython··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
My own definition: If the ingredient list contains something that you are not exactly sure what it is, then it is processed.

Personally I consider a can of skipjack tuna in spring water to be unprocessed, even though it has been canned.

I consider a frozen bag of peeled and cooked shrimp to be unprocessed, even though it has been peeled, cooked, and frozen.

But a frozen bag of peeled garlic shrimp I would consider to be processed, because the ingredient list contains items I don't exactly know what they are.

So that's my definition, it's the ingredient list.

ihatepython··on Borland Turbo Assembler Version 5 User's Guide (1996) [pdf]
Personally I don't believe in the no-win situation
ihatepython··on KDE beats macOS
The most intuitive UI that I have ever used is Intuition on the Amiga. It's in the name, after all
ihatepython··on KDE beats macOS
> Is intuitiveness the right word? I make the same arguments about Vim, that it's one of the most logically consistent editors once you learn the basic set of primitives (not perfect of course). But I don't think anyone would call it intuitive.

As far as I know, VI is actually an acronym that stands for Very Intuitive

ihatepython··on New research shows Māori adapted quickly in the face of rapid climate change
> Some really unhinged ideologues are in positions of power right now.

Yes this may be true, but Jacinda won the election fair and square

ihatepython··on Xcode 14 unintentionally increases app size
Hmm. Recently I have been using my api-keys as actual function names. Maybe that's not such a good idea
ihatepython··on I make $8k/year sending cheap flight alert emails
maybe 12oz, but this is high quality, not at all like the stuff you would get in Wellington

ihatepython··on We should have Markdown-rendered websites
I would be on-board with this as long as we compile everything into WebAssembly with Emscripten first
