Another factor to look at is how extensive the realtime functionality will be. If you just want to make a realtime dashboard for your app, using ajax with a partial to redraw a div every second (or do nothing if the ajax returns no change) is really simple compared to having to add the complexity of another service in a different language (remember that node.js will run on a different port and as a separate process from rails).
If your app is highly dependent on realtime, and you're not planning on launching to a wide audience in 6 months, sure, rewrite in meteor.
I suspect that this is not sustainable.

The justice system is so disgustingly broke that we absolutely need dedicated, level-headed people to do these types of "social hacks" to prove it.
It takes willful acts of civil disobedience to create real change, to bring awareness in a way that's difficult to ignore.
Catching the bad guy is not the only thing that matters in law enforcement, but sadly that's what the militarization of police forces is creating: a system where the ends justify the means. You would not be so dismissive if you were the habitual target of police laziness. It takes a lot of work to catch the bad guys without breaking the rules.
Some folks here are asking why this is better than a spreadsheet. For the same reason that people use CRM instead of a spreadsheet. That, and you can obtain time and location data passively.
As a former Flex developer, I must admit that Flex was the best thing that ever happened to web development, but unfortunately the Flash team wasn't strong enough to bring the runtime to mobile with enough quality. Building a RIA in Flex was so incredibly easy, and debugging was easy, and you really could use anything you wanted for a backend (I've used Perl, PHP, and Java). Bidirectional data binding, an excellent widget library, and a lot of help from the default IDE (custom build of Eclipse) allowed me to build software, full stack, with an engineering team of 1 on a weekly release cycle.
I've spent more time debugging HTML5/JS/CSS than building entire applications in Flex. The AdvancedDataGrid component alone was worth the price of admission.
I've spent the majority of the past 15 years in vi(m), and have recently switched to Sublime for working on projects with many, many files, plus mouse support.

I think the use of the word "evil" to describe the actions of our well meaning but thoroughly righteous and shortsighted government is counterproductive. If evil exists outside of fairy tales, it does so inside of us. All of us.
I see this as inevitable: the technology is nearly here, the market demand is certainly here, the dots will be connected, legally, or otherwise.
