> It's utterly unreal to me to hear so little discussion about labor organization

Never lived in the US, where I assume you are from. It's the same country that contrary to most countries, does not have May 1st as a Holiday. Same country that has states with at will employment, etc etc.

unreal? nope, totally coherent and expected.

The famous cat-in-the-middle attack

igleria··on U.S. unemployment rose in November despite job gains
> I live in Europe

So do I... Europe is quite diverse. My retirement, if there is a society at that point, would be funded by a mix of a private pension fund and a public one (Ireland).

> PURRTRAN allocates all variables to an arena called the "Litterbox". The Litterbox must be manually emptied at least once a day by the user, or Hex's cleanliness and love will decrease. The Litterbox can overflow, which will cause Hex to become very displeased and may lead to unexpected program behavior, as Hex will begin storing variables in your source code text buffer instead of the Litterbox until it's cleaned.

I'm cackling like a madman, thank you for this op.

igleria··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
The Venn diagram of {people that are ok with paying taxes} and {people that will own the technology that replaces humans that pay taxes from their income} is probably going to show such a small intersection that... UBI or whatever is the flavor of the month will not be feasible.
igleria··on Cloudflare was down
Heads will roll at cloudfare. E-commerce customers must be furious.

Impossible not to feel bad for whoever is tasked to cleanup the mess.

igleria··on Fara-7B: An efficient agentic model for computer use
half of GDP generated by all software and finance companies (ai and non ai) are artificial moats based in overengineering for the sake of selling something at a higher price than it would be if it was simpler.
igleria··on Steam censors LGBTQ+ content on behalf of the Russian Government
For other examples of censorship: try playing "sleeping dogs" in Germany.
igleria··on Technical Deflation
In Argentina I've learned from a young age that prices take the elevator, but salaries take the stairs.

It got old really quick having to negotiate with the boss every 6 months.

igleria··on S&box is now an open source game engine
I feel the call of the valve hammer editor now (ok, that is a 20 year old memory so hopefully this engine has better map making tools)
igleria··on Ask HN: Should account creation/origin country be displayed on HN profiles?
I think knowing an account is fresh is enough.
igleria··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
> moving to an appropriate place

like under a bridge or something? Pardon the hyperbole, but you would have to assume people with no disposable income are idiots in order to suggest that solution.

igleria··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
Given that everyone already answered what I had in mind, what can we do about it? What happened in the past where we might get answers from?

I don't understand what is misleading or confusing about Rebecca or Ali. Either you respect someone else's personal preferences or not.

@dang since I can't flag this, I'm writing this here in the hope you have a way of seeing this.

btw, to the parent poster: get mental help.

> make the humans irrelevant

Only the poor or undesirable ones. I have the (hopefully incorrect) feeling that universal basic income and similar proposals are red herrings (due to their impracticality) to distract the masses from the fact that once people with enough economic power don't need them to fulfill their wishes, they will be in no better position than cattle.

There might not be a universe where, for example, someone with ALS is able to benefit from a humanoid robot for their daily needs unless they already had enough money/resources before this incipient revolutionary technology is deployed en masse.

We are close to a point where even personal security or securing one's assets can be done with robots. So you would not even need to keep human private security happy.

Again, I really really hope this new technology benefits the average person. I'm not optimistic on that happening.

igleria··on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure
muh shareholders!!!!!

on a more serious note, why is it always (ok, not every time, but too many times) a software developer (or adjacent) looking down on categorically more stressful and lower paid jobs? Must be some "huh they deserve it for not knowing bubblesort" type of mentality

I'm sadly unsurprised, but me ranting about silicon valley mentality on HN feels like yelling at a cloud. Best we can do is keep trying to make people's lives better even if it is not in the best interest of the shareholders :)

igleria··on Meta projected 10% of 2024 revenue came from scams
As far as I understood, the problem happens when the ad has a link to a website. I can't imagine that happening with static images or videos that don't link a website (that could be solved quite trivially...)
igleria··on Video games can alter reality
Yeah the brain is a bit of an extrapolation machine isn't it. Try running on a treadmill for half an hour and quickly stop and see what happens with your vision :)
igleria··on Meta projected 10% of 2024 revenue came from scams
X's scam originated revenue is probably a bigger percent, but 10% is too much... Shame on Meta.

edit: wow, some people REALLY don't like getting told they are knowingly contributing negatively to society.
