idontwantthis··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
That’s a remarkably cheap storage upgrade too. First time I’ve ever thought the upgrade would be worth the money.
idontwantthis··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
You should research economics. That $9000 can build a house that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. Then it gets paid back. $10000 in the bank and a $9000 house.
idontwantthis··on Is it time for a Luddite Renaissance?
My favorite is a notebook and pen. I tried all ways to write notes digitally and it only adds stress and friction for me. No batteries to charge, no files to backup, no bluetooth to sync.
idontwantthis··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
Private banks increase money supply by lending. If 10 people deposit $1000 in a bank, it can loan $9000 to an 11th person. Now the economy has $19000 total.
idontwantthis··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
That's not my claim.

Republicans just took a vocal public oath of loyalty to their President in which they promised to cheat in the the election. That happened. It's on video.

My claim is that you should vote for the other party. That sounds reasonable to me.

I voted in the primary against the incumbent. The incumbent won. I will vote for them because the Republican opponent is a documented sexual predator. That is literally true.

These are the "two sides" we are dealing with.

idontwantthis··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
You're not wrong, but you are muddying the waters. The sides are clear and bringing up primaries when it's too late is irrelevant.

> they'll be no better than the republicans on this issue.

There is no reason to think this is true. I will eat a gas generator if a Democrat president orders his EPA administrator to break established rules and precedent like the current one is doing.

idontwantthis··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
> Democrats aren't by default better on this issue vs republicans so you need to be more involved than just voting in the general.

The only thing that matters is Democrats gaining control of Congress and state governments. The choice that isn't a democrat is the wrong one. The time to vote out an incumbent was the primary.

idontwantthis··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
Elections have consequences. Vote democrat in November and again in 2028. When someone tells you both sides are the same tell them no, it's only Republicans that are allowing Datacenters to sidestep the law in order to poison us more efficiently.
idontwantthis··on Ask HN: AI and Math
Who would that be for? If AI comes up with problems that humans don’t understand and solves them, what does anyone gain?
idontwantthis··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
Exactly the situation The Rehearsal season 2 was about.
idontwantthis··on The little holes in your bread are telling you something
I don’t know how common it is in France, but you can ferment a baguette for 3 days and it makes a big difference.
idontwantthis··on Ask HN: Do you regret using Social Networking apps?
Social Networks were great. Social Media is destroying humanity.
idontwantthis··on What are your plans for when Software Engineering is no longer a viable career?
I pretty much let AI write all of my code but even Fable is still really dumb for moderately complex things. Just today I had it write a simple consumer for a message bus where the message was emitted from a different service. Messages weren’t going through. I spent a few hours debugging. Then fable helpfully informed me that there was still the small problem that the producer and consumer were connected to completely different buses. Not even the same protocol.
idontwantthis··on Apple debuts iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
I wouldn’t mind buying half of one of those for 1/4 the price.

Me too. Everyone who sees my phone loves it, and I always share a nod with my fellow mini owners. I really don’t want a huge phone and it is still more than fast enough (a 12 at that!) iPhones got Good Enough at least 6 years ago. Same with macbooks.
idontwantthis··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
I did add that rule and it’s helped a lot. It greps for ways it writes negative statements and does a pass to correct them. I can’t get it to stop writing them in the first place though.

I haven't been able to get a clear answer to my question about Theranos: Was what she offered obviously impossible? That's my understanding. Blood is not homogeneous so it is physically impossible to get an accurate full blood panel from a single drop. Was there every any plan to address this or was it clearly a 100% fictitious product from the get-go? Did any journalist ever ask her or any scientist at Theranos about this problem? If not, then what were the scientists at Theranos doing all day? Were they all in on the scam? Or were there no scientists?

I just don't get how you can spend years pretending to build something so obviously impossible.

idontwantthis··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
Fascists inherently do not care why people voted for them.

In Panama they say Chino for foreign versions and in Cambodia they say barang which literally means Frankish (via farang from Thailand).
idontwantthis··on Ask HN: Why is Founder Mode not working for Airbnb?
Personally, since airbnb shifted from people renting their own homes to people buying homes to airbnb it has just felt gross. The last time I used it the homeowner tried to scam me into replacing his broken tv. I have to assume there are hidden cameras in all of them because why wouldn’t there be?
idontwantthis··on You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting
Can someone clarify for me: This isn’t actually something a president can do or compel, right? There is no act I’m aware of that makes the President the Geography Czar. I picture the next Dem president (God willing), not changing it back, but issuing a statement saying that the name never actually changed just because the last twat said so.

> you can't be trapped in a sub-optimal situation and be rational at the same time

Yes you can that’s what tragedy of the commons is. Rational means you take the choice that provides the most value for yourself. Without a cartel (hard) or government regulation this situation happens all the time.

idontwantthis··on The Einstein-Szilard Refrigerator (2020)
It sounds like the article completely mixed together two different inventions of theirs and the one you described was the much more important one.
idontwantthis··on The Einstein-Szilard Refrigerator (2020)
I love learning that the “Einstein-Szilard Letter”, perhaps the most important letter written in the history of the world, was predated by the Einstein-Szilard Refrigerator.

I didn’t know that they had had a long relationship before that.

idontwantthis··on Ask HN: If I am 16 what should I learn? Which books should read?
How to Win Friends and Influence People.

Sounds corny, but the advice is timeless and eye opening if you don't have natural knack for dealing with people. It will save you a lot of frustration. I didn't read it until 30 and I wish I had read it at 16.

idontwantthis··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I’ve been using the caveman plugin and I’ve found it effective so far. Chat output isn’t nearly as flowery. Also ponytail to cut down the cruft and effusive comments.

idontwantthis··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
You are ignoring the fact that the Trump administration has taken proactive steps to interfere with economics and prevent people and companies from building cheaper clean energy. They have tried to ban offshore windfarms and when that didn’t work they straight up paid Total $1billion to build fossil fuel plants instead. They spend millions to tear out already installed chargers from federal property. They illegally clawed back funding states and companies were already spending on clean energy. They eliminated tax benefits for electric cars, causing car companies to spend several billion dollars to completely reverse their production strategies.
