ido··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
LLMs are particularly good at web development (granted that's a big market), probably due to a lot of the training material being that.
ido··on Rebecca Heineman has died
The games industry is not traditionally well paid, unfortunately.
ido··on Being poor vs. being broke
I'll have to think harder to come up with the exact number, but I've had approximately 3 Android phones and 3 iPhones in my smartphone-career (changed phones more often in the beginning than at the end).

iPhones just last longer (and retain value a lot longer), even when compared to high end Androids (I did research online & bought the recommended brands at the time, like Google Pixel). I currently use an iPhone 11 (6 years old model at the moment, bought slightly-used a few years ago when it was a fairly new model) and have no plan to replace it anytime soon.

It is however very much a "rich people can afford to save money" boots-type situation.

ido··on When Soviet-made cars roamed Singapore roads
The Trabi was made of duroplast. Sussita, the only Israeli car (similar vintage) used fiberglass (only slightly better). I guess both had the advantage of being lightweight (and cheap).
ido··on AI isn't replacing jobs. AI spending is
It was extremely difficult to get used to when I was visiting India for a few months years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_numbering_system
ido··on Running a 68060 CPU in Quadra 650
Isn't the 68060 backward compatible? Why wouldn't it run the same binaries compiled for other 68k CPUs?
ido··on 72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study
I think what you’re saying is that they are a natural monopoly, which isn’t nefarious or illegal. But is still a monopoly.
ido··on The profitable startup

Maybe it's my own personal bias but I feel that these stories of low,
slow growth; small teams, small wins but consistency are becoming
more norm. While I realize there is still plenty of froth, it's
inspiring and makes me hopeful for an industry shift in that direction.
I prefer small teams myself too, but do keep in mind "an industry shift in that direction" would also mean far less demand for developers...
ido··on Free software scares normal people
Does it? I often ask ChatGPT such things and specifying I want free software options is enough (it often mentions which options are and aren’t free on its own).
ido··on Doing well in your courses: Andrej's advice for success (2013)
I suspect the reason is that most late-teens/early-twenty-somethings are not responsible/emotionally mature enough to put in the required amount of work in the relatively free environment of university where nobody is checking if you’re doing your homework or show up to class.
ido··on Why do Stanford math professors still use chalk? (2021)
Squeegee like sibling comments mentioned, then it doesn't take long to dry.
ido··on Why do Stanford math professors still use chalk? (2021)

I did not appreciate having to pound the dust out of the erasers when I was in grade school.
I wonder if they could make the chalk magnetic and have magnetic trap at the bottom or
    something. But again too complicated.
The Russian solution is to use water - wipe the board with a wet sponge.
ido··on The Buchstabenmuseum Berlin is closing
Municipal/state government cutting budgets.
ido··on Reader Response to "AI Overinvestment"
Didn't more modern currencies (e.g. ETH post switch to Proof-of-Stake) solve a lot of that[0]?

[0] I own no crypto and have no horse in that race, just from what i understood from online discourse.

ido··on Reader Response to "AI Overinvestment"
> I'm convinced that most office work exists for social reasons

The powers that be are not competent/powerful enough to engineer a society-wide conspiracy like that.

A lot of waste (especially in big organizations, and the bigger the organization the more capacity for waste) happens, and the more the income is detached from production (e.g. governments get tax revenue regardless of how well they spend it) the less people care about efficiency.

But for the most part people get hired because somebody thought that makes business sense to do so.

ido··on Why I gave the world wide web away for free
Microstransactions are a massive on iOS and android using “non-crypto” currency and have been for many years.
ido··on The "Wage Level" Mirage: H-1B proposal could help outsourcers and hurt US talent
Sounds like it would have been simpler to just raise it to $160k instead of introducing a $100k fee.
ido··on The "Wage Level" Mirage: H-1B proposal could help outsourcers and hurt US talent
Why not set a salary floor for H1-B candidates? That's how the equivalent works in Germany (the floor is quite low imo but if it's too low it can be set higher). If you set the floor (maybe per profession) for software engineers at say $250k p.a. there'll be little benefit to bringing in unskilled labor, but the occasional great candidate could still get in.
ido··on Why, as a responsible adult, SimCity 2000 hits differently
Do we really need to do this with each comment adding another rule and another reply from someone breaking it?

I live in Berlin with my wife and 2 kids (who were born lived their whole lives in Berlin). We all bike and take transit. Neither me nor my wife even have a driver's license. We're doing fine. We know plenty of other families with multiple kids in the same situation.

ido··on The Sagrada Família takes its final shape
There are a lot more tourists then there used to be in the past. When I moved to Vienna in 2005 I used to take weekend trips to nearby cities (anything up to a couple hours by train, like Budapest or Brno). I would just go on a train and when I’d arrive I’d find some hostel and get a room on the spot.

Today you really have to reserve, sometimes months in advance if it’s during the high season.

ido··on A QBasic Text Adventure Still Expanding in 2025
Amazing dedication! QBasic was also my first taste of programming.

I wonder what you'd consider the tradeoffs of QBasic vs something intentionally geared towards IF, like Inform[0]?

ido··on X-COM creator Julian Gollop discusses his most important games (2019)
The contemporary Jagged Alliance, while it has a handful of baffling UI (that was already the case when it was new), is still imo much easier to get into than the original X-com while having nicer looking graphics.
ido··on Coinbase CEO Revealed He Fired Engineers Who Didn't Use AI Tools
I’m not forcing them to stop printing, I’m introducing an additional tool to their toolbox. For some reason ive offen seen resistance to even try learning how to use a debugger.
ido··on Coinbase CEO Revealed He Fired Engineers Who Didn't Use AI Tools
Ive multiple times had to force programmers to use a debugger at least once (instead of only printing/logging). If they wouldn’t do it on their own whenever a bug stumped them where they needed my help I stepped into the debugger with them to demonstrate how easy to use it is & how much more info/control you get vs printing.
ido··on Why Romania excels in international Olympiads
> It’s why you have a generation of kids that only eat chicken fingers and french fries.

I’m 42 years old and something like this was already said about kids when I was a child (I suspect it was like that before my time as well). Children’s palate develops with age and so does their taste.

ido··on AI is predominantly replacing outsourced, offshore workers
Historically imporvments in programmer productivity (e.g. via better languages, tooling and hardware) didn't correlate to a decrease in demand for programemrs, but quite the opposite.
ido··on The Enterprise Experience
> I'm willing to take a 20% pay cut at this point for a chance to actually ship things at a small company.

Unfortunately the pay cut might be a lot bigger than 20%. I've seen people have "the same job" where one gets paid $300k p.a. at FAANG and another $60k at a small company (while getting a lot more done).

ido··on Bullfrog in the Dungeon
Jimmy tend to have opinions about the games he covers and doesn’t pretend to present some ideal objective review (he had much “hotter” takes about other games in past articles). Take it for what it is and enjoy the ride, I’ve been reading his articles for years - he is an exceptionally prolific writer and the whole site is a treat if you’re interested in computer game history.
