Good points, and I would even go one step further and cast doubt on the notion that "dumb" people don't see the awful. That is not my experience at all.
If I know I'll get a rare type of cancer in 10 years, I'd rather have 10 experts working on a treatment right now than 1. I won't have the time to wait for 10 generations of cancer research. Timing is important, too.
They don't compare. One group has their homes "impacted" (they are inconvenienced by the sight of poverty), the other group doesn't have a freaking home.
You know what's even more unfair than you having to deal with this "eye sore"? That these people are homeless. Have some empathy. They are people, too.
You don't have to ban them outright. You could just ban the sale of guns or require a license, that would make it so much harder for a troubled teenager to obtain a gun. You know, like in Europe. You can buy guns there, even assault rifles, just not at 18 without a license.
In the world of crypto, where people keep repeating the "not your keys, not your coins" mantra, crypto exchanges are very much the owners of all the coins they hold. But I agree, it's absurd.
It's not just me that is stuck in an hourly mindset, it's every company offering developer jobs ever. In my contract it's not defined how much I have to get done, only how many hours I have to work per week. Time worked is tracked, work done not really.
It's kinda weird watching team members finish two tickets per week when you know they could finish two per day. I know I should probably relax like them but it feels too much like cheating (and let's be honest, it is).
This is not envy in my opinion. You are not upset, you are happy John is happy, where is the envy exactly? You recognizing that he has something you don't?
In the US, a single grocery trip can result in 10-20 plastic bags. Not sure about the UK, but in most European countries people bring their own tote bags.
This sure plays a big role, I agree. Maybe I would feel some envy in that example, but I would also not let it consume me, and still feel happy for my friend at the same time.
