icehawk··on 2400 phone providers may be shut down by the FCC for failing to stop robocalls
The only thing I haven't done on this list has have children, and I haven't yet missed an important call with that strategy.

If it's important, they can leave an relevant voicemail.

icehawk··on What does this button do? – My new car has a mysterious and undocumented switch
None of what you said here makes sense in the context of what you replied to.

> Tell that to the Amish.

The Amish have large populations in the northeast US, not rural southern England.

> Car dependency is something that we've learned, not the natural state of things.

What does this have to do with the fact someone was unable to drive due to medical reasons and learned first-hand how much society was set up to need a car?

icehawk··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
> Think about this...if car does 'x' damage to the road, 2 cars does 2x damage. 2 cars welded together side by side (axle to axle so the axle count stays the same) would also do 2x damage, but the 4th power law says it does 16x damage.

Are you removing the two inner wheels from the axle? Those would also support weight

icehawk··on Niantic plans a “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
Exactly! Everyone thought that the exchange was them doing something in the game, and Niantic was giving them the rewards in the game, and no one had any reasonable expectation that Niantic would get more outside of the game. (After all, neither Blizzard or Square get anything when one completes quest objectives in their MMO.)

So obviously, now that Niantic is getting things outside the game its reasonable the people who did the work ask for something from that.

icehawk··on Overengineering a way to know if people are in my university's CS lab
And thus they'd fall under the legal definition of public: "Under the authority of the government or belonging and available to the people."

or

"of or relating to a government"

icehawk··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
So how many hours have you spent as a teacher?

Because if you're putting forth the assertion "If they could make it elsewhere, they would." you've certainly had spent sometime teaching, yes?

I think it would be good to understand how much experience teaching it took for you to come to that conclusion.

icehawk··on Time is a dimension, but not like space
Yes.

Gven the average mass of a human body at 66kg: (((1/sqrt(1-((0.99c)^2/c^2)))--1) 66kg * c^2) = 50,000PJ

which is the amount of electrical energy the entire US produces in 0.287h???

icehawk··on Time is a dimension, but not like space
And it can't move at the speed of light. It can approach the speed of light which isn't the same thing as moving at it.
icehawk··on WordPress retaliation impacts community
How is it weird that people who do not like being involved in drama do things where they are not involved in the drama.
icehawk··on "Begin disabling installed extensions still using Manifest V2 in Chrome stable"
The adoption of firefox was driven by word of mouth.

I still can't search on google with them trying to shove chrome down my throat

icehawk··on Are retrocomputers best left on or off?
> It's more often the capacitors

And the electrolyte can and will start to leak and foul the ICs around them, if not by ruining the traces/pads, then they can also foul the legs and/or find their way into the chip package itself, so the ICs will fail as a secondary issue.

icehawk··on ByteDance’s Bytespider is scraping at much higher rates than other platforms
It was originally created because printers needed a constant stream of new works because once they published something their competitors could immediately copy it and republish it without the initial cost of making the work.

That's why its copyright and not artistright.

icehawk··on So thieves broke into your storage unit again
If they are deemed unacceptable, I now get to make the argument of negligence on the part of the storage facility, as they are the ones who sold it to me and I can reasonably assume that since they suggested it, and the insurance policy, that it is fit for purpose. I might then be able to make the case of fraud.
icehawk··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
You've been doing that to yourself, since you brought up the FBI in response to "a car covered in hammers that explodes more than a few times and hammers go flying everywhere." months ago
icehawk··on How to avoid a BSOD on your 2B dollar spacecraft
For something like the spacecraft in the article, you absolutely would have the ability to get access to the Windows source code.
icehawk··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
Please understand you are not representative of everyone. I'm aware of several teams that were heavily remote far before COVID. They worked fine then, and they work fine now.
icehawk··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
Oh that started way before COVID.
icehawk··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
> The other grift is when people have multiple projects to tell each manager that the workload is high on the other project right now.

Your problems might be a little bit more deeply rooted, WFH abuse sounds like a symptom and not a cause.

icehawk··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
>The only bit I'll buy is that some are doing it as a form of soft layoffs. But I find it hard to believe that every company doing this would act against its own interests in terms of productivity.

WRT "in terms of productivity"?

Companies do this all the time, and especially when they lay people off. (soft or otherwise)

There's absolutely a loss of productivity as everyone has to sort out the logistical changes while doing the things they normally do.

icehawk··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
Define "abuse" first. Bonus if you add how its different from all the abuse you can do when working in an office.

(I'll define "abuse" in my post after you define yours, I asked you first.)

icehawk··on Avian flu detected in wastewater from 10 Texas cities
Would love to see your sources to the contrary!
icehawk··on Support for IPv6
It would fit in RAM but then you actually have to search through RAM. I have a router that is doing a very modest 3gbps of traffic, or about 2000pps that all need lookups, and about 40 updates per second that goes into that table.

I should also mention that's 40 updates per second for a default free zone of about 950,000 routes. 8 billion routes would be an minimum update frequency of ~370,000 routes per second assuming the same stability.

icehawk··on Support for IPv6
Its no more magical than v4. In fact the BGP turn up call I usually have to do does both v4 and v6 at the same time.
icehawk··on How Raw sockets behave differently in macOS and Linux
How many non-Linux UNIX operating systems have you used? It's Linux that's the weird one.
icehawk··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
WFH worked before COVID. Parts of my team were fully remote 10 years ago. I haven't been going in a full five days a week for 6 years. I got way more productive from home.

I'll never do the 5 days in the office again.

icehawk··on Falsehoods programmers believe about TCP
Honest question: Why didn't you send the message's idempotency token back to the client? Then you're playing the familiar local database locking game.
icehawk··on Brazil Supreme Court unfreezes X, Starlink's bank accounts after taking $3.3M
Oh well i can see it on twitter! Still not secret!
icehawk··on Brazil Supreme Court unfreezes X, Starlink's bank accounts after taking $3.3M
Kinda weird take on this. I mean, none of this is a secret. The fact that we know about it precludes this.

Not to mention they did post court documents on twitter and tagged musk himself

icehawk··on Defend against vampires with 10 gbps network encryption
I did something like this to stretch L2 as I was moving into a new home. Worked great after I realized t-mobile does not like passing IP fragments.

Got to use it again to set up a remote telescope for the eclipse.

icehawk··on My Homelab Setup
This seems fairly overly critical, especially when you are complaining about thing like DHCP assigning dynamic addresses when the intention is started in the article itself, (the lease is reserved in the DHCP server config.)
