if you don't consider the effects of quantum mechanics then all objects have an event horizon.

Black holes are relative. Inside you there is a black hole at your center of mass (its just that your event horizon is very far inside you). To things moving at relativistic speeds in relation to you, your mass is huge (to them), and you look like a black hole.

Yeah, this would be a god send. As someone who is writing more and more C++ for computer vision type stuff, a modern overview would be great. I am stuck working off of things I learned over the years and don't feel quite like I'm writing modern idiomatic C++

Scala is an immensely popular jvm language (as far as jvm langaugesg go). That's why it would be a good candidate.
